Though the judge turned aside Trump’s expansive view of presidential power, the order might not be the final say in the legal fight. Analysts say the war is bound to continue until Hamas is crushed, and it may be much fiercer this time. The Israeli military’s announcement about the resumption in fighting came moments after the truce between Israel and Hamas expired. The deal saw the warring parties exchange hostages held in Gaza for Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. During its October 7 attack, Hamas killed more than 1,200 in Israel and kidnapped about 240 others, Israeli authorities said.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — A truce between Israel and Hamas entered its fifth day on Tuesday, with the militant group promising to release more civilian hostages to delay the expected resumption of the war and Israel under growing pressure to spare Palestinian civilians when the fighting resumes. The sides agreed to extend their truce through Wednesday, with another two planned exchanges of militant-held hostages for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. Hamas and other militants are still holding about 160 people, out of the 240 seized in their Oct. 7 assault into southern Israel that ignited the war. Most of the hostages freed so far have appeared to be physically well. The hostages freed from Gaza have mostly stayed out of the public eye, but details of their captivity have started to emerge.

They give the lie to the “Cease-Fire Now” mirage, or imposture, that has become a rallying cry at pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Why should it matter that it was Hamas that broke the cease-fire when Palestinian civilians are being killed in large numbers by Israeli bombs and bullets? As I write, there are reports that Hamas might release some hostages in exchange for a brief cease-fire. What about for Palestinians — women, children and noncombatant men for whom the calls for a cease-fire are supposedly intended? There are good intentions, if also ignorance and shortsightedness, among many of those demanding a cease-fire.
