REUTERS/Wolfgang Rattay/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsFRANKFURT, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Germany's Covestro (1COV.DE) should engage in formal takeover talks with Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (ADNOC) in the interest of its shareholders, two top-15 investors of the plastics and chemicals maker told Reuters. ADNOC, which is trying to diversify and develop its downstream and renewable energy operations, made a non-binding offer for Covestro of 55 euros per share in June, which was rejected, according to press reports. Rautenberg declined to comment on the price at which he would recommend Covestro accept an offer. Covestro this week appointed Christian Baier as chief financial officer, with Rautenberg noting his past dealmaking experience at private equity firm Permira.

China is providing Russia with helicopters, drones, and crucial raw materials. China claims it has remained neutral and has repeatedly denied sending military equipment to Russia since it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. But The Telegraph's investigation found that the country has delivered tens of thousands of shipments to Russian military equipment manufacturers. With the outbreak of the war, the aid ramped up, with Chinese firms Hems999 and Tianjin Huarong Aviation dispatching helicopters to Russia. Plant-based plastic, that is. However, the environmental benefits of plant-based plastics are increasingly appealing to companies promising to use more sustainable materials by the end of the decade. Plants absorb the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide, which cuts the greenhouse-gas emissions from making bioplastics to at least half that of fossil-fuel-based plastics. This would boost the oil giant's non-binding bid to about 11.6 billion euros ($12.63 billion), the people said. The indication of a raised offer is, however, not in writing, the people cautioned, adding that Covestro will take time to consider any next steps. ADNOC last raised its informal offer to 57 euros per share in July. Covestro shares jumped about 4.2% in a volume spike after Bloomberg News first reported that ADNOC was prepared to sweeten its offer. Earlier in August, Covestro reported a 21% fall in revenues to 3.7 billion euros in the second quarter.

Aluminum ended July on a high note and there are several stocks that could benefit from the recent strength in the metal and prove opportunities for investors. CNN —Sometimes it only takes one visit to convince visitors to pack up their belongings and move to Bonaire permanently. “I fell in love with Bonaire,” Davis, now in her mid-60s, says of her initial visit. MANILA, July 24 (Reuters) - Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr on Monday touted his administration's successes over the past year, including battling inflation and steering the economy back on track, but said a number of economic challenges lie ahead. After more than a year in office, buffeted by soaring inflation that has dented economic growth, the government is now "stabilising the prices of all critical commodities", Marcos said. "Inflation rate is moving in the right direction," he said in his second state of the nation address. Developing the long-neglected farm sector, which contributes 10% of the country's economic output, is a priority for Marcos, who also helms the agriculture ministry. The Philippines remains vulnerable to global price shocks because it buys a sizeable portion of its rice overseas, and relies on imports for most of its fuel requirements.

July 25 (Reuters) - Dow (DOW.N) on Tuesday posted a 70% drop in second-quarter profit on lower product prices and weak sales volumes, while warning that the macroeconomic environment would remain challenging in the second half of the year after. Dow said it was expecting third-quarter net sales in the range of $10.25 billion to $10.75 billion, lower than Wall Street's expectations of $12.37 billion in net sales. Dow's net sales during the quarter fell to $11.4 billion from $15.7 billion, hinting at weak demand for its products that are used in everything from plastics and paints to building materials. Dow posted operating income of 75 cents per share, beating estimates by 5 cents, according to Refinitiv data, aided by its cost-saving efforts. The complex ownership structure and the involvement of two governments make it intriguing to see who holds the whip hand. ADNOC owns 54% of Abu Dhabi-listed Borouge, while 36% of the same company is held by Borealis, with other investors accounting for the other 10%. Meanwhile ADNOC owns 25% of Borealis, while OMV holds the other 75%. Strip out Borouge's dividend, and Borealis would be worth $10 billion, Deutsche Bank reckons. ADNOC’s 63% Borouge stake and 25% Borealis stake are thus worth $14 billion and $2.5 billion respectively; OMV’s 27% Borouge stake and 75% Borealis holding are worth $6 billion and $7.5 billion.

Self-healing metal is still just science fiction, right? Metal fatigue can cause catastrophic failures in areas including aviation - jet engines, for instance - and infrastructure - bridges and other structures. It occurs at the nanoscale, and we have yet to be able to control the process," Boyce added. Scientists in the past have fashioned some self-healing materials, mostly plastics. Study co-author Michael Demkowicz, a Texas A&M University professor of materials science and engineering, predicted self-healing in metal a decade ago.

Sen. Ron Johnson told Insider in May that he had "no intentions" of recouping old campaign loans. But before that, he'd already done so — receiving $400,000 from his campaign after raising money for it. When asked by Insider in May if he would seek to recoup any of those loans, Johnson indicated that he wouldn't. That included a total of $210,000 to repay loans he made during his 2010 campaign, and $190,000 to repay loans he made during his 2016 campaign. A portion of the loans that Johnson repaid himself on May 3rd, days before he spoke with Insider.

Also in the survey, 46 percent of American companies thought that U.S.-China relations would deteriorate in 2023, while only 13 percent thought they would improve. VW, which relies on gallium and germanium for automotive products, said it was "ready to take measures together with its partners if necessary" but did not elaborate. The metals will play a role in future autonomous driving functions, a spokesperson for the German automaker said. Germanium is used in high-speed computer chips, plastics, and in military applications such as night-vision devices, as well as satellite imagery sensors. But if prices rise as restrictions take hold companies would have another reason to shift supply chains. NXP makes some chips for the auto and communications sectors using gallium or germanium.

Shares in some Chinese metals companies rallied for a second session as investors bet that higher prices for gallium and germanium, which Beijing's export restrictions target, could boost revenues. China is the world's biggest producer of rare earths, a group of metals used in EVs and military equipment. Asked about the metals export curbs, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday the government's actions were reasonable and lawful. WARNING SHOTSome larger chip manufacturers view China's export controls on gallium as more of a warning shot about what economic pain the country could inflict. China's germanium ingot was priced at 9,150 yuan per kg on Tuesday, also flat on the day and on the week, Refinitiv data showed.
