The chart below is meant to provide a high level view of the revenue exposure each of the 35 companies in our portfolio has to the world's second-largest economy. First, a couple caveats: Our energy exploration and production stocks Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) screen as having zero revenue exposure outside of the United States. Nvidia (NVDA) is another stock where the direct revenue exposure can be misleading. That makes the 60% revenue exposure to the Asia-Pacific region more concerning, even as mainland China realized organic sales growth during the quarter. As a result, total sales, services sales and wearables, home and accessories sales all set June quarter records in Greater China.

Meanwhile, S & P 500 companies are spending more and more on capital expenditures (CapEx). Certainly, some companies execute wise buybacks, while others are not as ideal. Humana repurchased $529 million worth of common stock in the second quarter, after spending only $4 million in the year-ago period. Of course, companies also must consider their spending on buybacks versus investments back in the business in order to support growth, such as new manufacturing equipment or data centers. But less spending on buybacks is not necessarily something to worry about.

Oil and natural gas producer Coterra Energy (CTRA) delivered mixed results after the closing bell Monday, with second-quarter sales missing expectations and profit outpacing estimates. However, natural gas liquid prices missed estimates. While management did raise their outlook for total production along with their production targets for oil and natural gas, they left capital expenditure expectations alone. Given the pressure seen on commodity prices, particularly in natural gas, management was forced to lower their outlook for operating cash flow and free cash flow. Guidance Forward guidance for both the third quarter and full year 2023 was mixed — and unfortunately, the full-year misses were on management's cash flow forecasts.

REUTERS/Angus Mordant/File PhotoAug 1 (Reuters) - Shale producers Pioneer Natural Resources Co (PXD.N) and Devon Energy Corp (DVN.N) on Tuesday tightened budgets and warned of lower drilling and completions activity in coming months after a drop in oil and gas prices slashed their second-quarter profits. U.S. shale producers have been forced to reduce the number of rigs in operation and delay well completions as profits have fallen from bumper 2022 levels after crude prices eased from multi-year highs. Pioneer, a top producer in the Permian shale basin, cut its 2023 budget, including for drilling and completions, by $125 million to a range of $4.375 billion to $4.575 billion. Devon, which operates in Permian's Delaware basin, forecast capital spending of about $900 million in the third quarter, less than in the second quarter, after one temporary fracking crew was dropped from the basin.

Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) reported strong second-quarter profits and cash flow after the bell Tuesday, but favorable revisions to its guidance shined the brightest. Pioneer's Q2 oil production came in toward the top of its guidance, at 369.1 thousand barrels per day (MBbls/d). For the third quarter, Pioneer expects its total production to average between 705 and 725 MBoe/d, with oil production specifically to average between 367 and 377 MBbls/d. A long-awaited rally in crude oil prices has helped the Club's three oil-and-gas companies become some of our top-performing stocks over the past month. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, and West Texas Intermediate crude, the U.S. oil standard, have both climbed by more than 10% since late June. Energy stocks linked to crude — including Club names Halliburton (HAL), Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) — have risen on oil's fortunes. U.S. producers also have shown restraint, Kumar told CNBC, with domestic crude production hovering around 12.3 million barrels per day all year . Moreover, a year-over-year drop in U.S. rig counts points to "a bit of a decline in oil production" down the road, Kumar said.

On the call, management reiterated that growing free cash flow is a top priority, and they expect over 50% of it to be "returned to shareholders this year." Speaking of cash returns, the company repurchased $248 million worth of shares during the quarter while returning another $144 million to shareholders via dividends. The team also guided for full-year free cash flow generation to be above what analysts were looking for — a material positive for the stock in the back half of the year. While maintaining our 2 rating , we're nudging up our price target to $42 per share from $40), reflecting about 18 times 2024 free cash flow per share estimates or about 11.5 times 2024 earnings estimates. With 2022 free cash flow coming in at $1.43 million, this forecast amounts to about $1.93 million at the midpoint, above Wall Street's $1.84 million expectation.
