Space industry experts told Business Insider that Musk's influence over Trump could help advance his business interests, including sending the first crewed mission to Mars. "I'm hugely optimistic about what's going to happen in space now," Michelle Hanlon, executive director of the Center for Air and Space Law at the University of Mississippi School of Law, told Business Insider. Hanlon's optimism isn't unfounded, especially if Trump's second term focuses on space as much as his first. AdvertisementDuring his first term, from 2017 to 2021, Trump's administration founded the Space Force, re-launched the National Space Council, and established NASA's Artemis program. A spokesperson for Trump's campaign said that Musk's ideas and efficiency will benefit federal bureaucracy but his role in Trump's administration remains under wraps.

Police are still searching for 43 monkeys that escaped from a research facility in South Carolina on Wednesday, as the head of the company revealed that the outbreak happened when a staff member failed to secure a door properly. Police in Yemassee, Beaufort County, confirmed Thursday night that the primates were in the wooded region surrounding the Alpha Genesis facility, in a rural area on the edge of Yamassee. Locals were urged to lock windows and doors and not to interact with the monkeys and instead call 911 immediately upon spotting any of the escaped primates. Alpha Genesis carries out medical research for a range of clients for several conditions, including brain disorders. Meanwhile, animal rights advocates have raised concerns over the ethics of using primates in medical research on such a scale.

Dollar winds down after volatile week, China NPC in focus

The dollar further unwound some of its sharp gains from earlier in the week as traders closed out profitable bets on a Trump presidency after his election victory. That helped lift sterling back toward the $1.30 mark, while the yen similarly got some respite and hovered closer to the 153 per dollar level. Sterling last traded $1.2983, recovering from its fall to a roughly three-month low earlier in the week. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar ticked up 0.03% to 104.44, on track to gain just above 0.1% for the week. "All eyes are on what may emerge from China's policy toolkit after the conclusion of the NPC standing committee meeting."

Former U.S. President Donald Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in this week's election has raised questions about how Asia will be impacted. "When passed, the [tariffs] will sweep across Asia, particularly China [and] should spike volatility and compress multiples as uncertainty prevails." Even so, the analysts say the region is "more prepared than in 2016" and investment opportunities remain, especially given the weaker yen and stimulus in China. This will bring about "structural shifts in global supply chain ... [and] could boost infrastructure spending in ASEAN and South Asia," he added. The currency has fallen versus the dollar following Trump's win, hitting 154.7 per dollar on Wednesday — its weakest level since July 30.

Philadelphia Phillies managing partner and principal owner John Middleton signs autographs prior to the 2024 London Series game between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies at London Stadium in London on June 9, 2024. The Philadelphia Phillies recently raised close to $500 million in capital from three new investors in a transaction that values the Major League Baseball team and its 25% stake in regional sports network NBC Sports Philadelphia at about $3 billion, according to two people familiar with the deal. Given that limited-partner stakes typically go for about 20% less than control stakes because LPs have no say in how the team is run, the $3 billion valuation equates to roughly a $3.7 billion control valuation. A little more than a year ago, Middleman purchased a 16.25% stake in the Phillies at a grossed up valuation of $2.8 billion. Based on revenue multiples, a $3.7 billion control valuation for the Phillies would be eight times 2023 revenue, compared with multiples of 5.3 for the Orioles and 6.7 for the Mets, according to historic revenue calculations.

These are the most overbought stocks after Trump's win this week

Several software companies could be due for a pullback after the stock market's roaring rally this week, fueled by president-elect Donald Trump's election victory as well as robust quarterly earnings reports. Shares of video game makers Take-Two Interactive Software and Electronic Arts are two of the stocks that are technically overbought right now, according to the analysis. The most overbought stock this week was human capital management software company Dayforce, with an RSI of 92.4. But higher prices and expectations of normalizing pricing, which helped Coke guide its organic revenue growth this year to the high end of a prior forecast, could lead the stocks higher. Other oversold stocks include power generation company AES , as well as radio frequency equipment maker Qorvo and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals — the latter two of which were also oversold the previous week.

A police search is underway after 40 monkeys escaped from a research facility in South Carolina on Wednesday night. Police in Yemassee, Beaufort County, said the animals escaped from Alpha Genesis, a business that provides "nonhuman primate products and bio-research services," according to its website. It is also not known what trials the escaped monkeys were taking part in, nor whether they were exposed to any diseases. Alpha Genesis did not immediately respond to an overnight request for comment from NBC News. In 2022, three monkeys escaped following a traffic accident in rural Pennsylvania.

A Donald Trump presidency and Republican-controlled Senate could boost big banks, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Betsy Graseck. The analyst highlighted four big banks investors should look toward: Citigroup, Goldman Sachs , Wells Fargo and Bank of America . The acceleration in capital markets should benefit all the big banks, and Goldman Sachs is set to benefit the most, she noted. Meanwhile, Citigroup is most exposed to tailwinds from higher excess capital levels as a Republican-led government is unlikely to raise current capital requirements. She estimates this will result in an $86 billion jump in current excess capital for the big banks in the firm's coverage.

Japan is one stock market outside the U.S. that could win now that Donald Trump is headed back to the White House. Trump has previously proposed tariffs of up to 20% on imports, with a stringent tax of 60% on goods coming from China. Japanese stocks rallied, however, as the yen weakened with some investors expecting the U.S. defense partner stands to gain most from Trump's policies. However, Akutsu warned, with few positive earnings surprises in the market, a year-end rally could be "limited in scope." Takada said investors may have to weigh the near-term benefits of a Trump market against the risks of a possible trade war, even with a rise in the Japanese equity risk premium.

Several stocks could rise if market volatility scales back after Tuesday's U.S. presidential election, according to a Bank of America analysis. Stock market volatility climbed ahead of the election, with the Cboe Volatility Index , known as Wall Street's "fear gauge," crossing 23 on Thursday. But with the winner of the election decided, the VIX has eased to around 16 on Wednesday. To react to this scenario, Bank of America screened for several lower-quality stocks inversely correlated to the VIX that could see a pop in their share prices. Morgan Stanley revised its 2024-25 revenue estimates on NXP lower, expecting a period of stagnation in the automotive semiconductor market.

Shortly after the opening bell, we will be selling 150 shares of Morgan Stanley at roughly $128.81 and 240 shares of Wells Fargo at roughly $71.02. The news Trump's decisive victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election comes with varying implications for Apple investors. Apple got exceptions in Trump's first term that muted the impact of tariffs on Apple. Bottom line Apple deftly navigated a first Trump term, but it's way too early to say with certainty what Trump's second term in office will mean for the California tech giant. As for tariffs, Apple has wisely expanded its manufacturing capabilities outside of China in markets like India, and it should continue to do so. In Trump's second term, "Apple is going to need what I call special pleading," Jim Cramer said during the Morning Meeting.
