WASHINGTON — House Republicans' calls for Rep. George Santos to resign are growing after state GOP leaders in New York said he should step aside over a slew of lies and fabrications in the biography he ran on in the 2022 midterm election. Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., also starting his first term, dropped his earlier hedging and unequivocally said Thursday that Santos should resign. “It is clear that George Santos has lost the confidence and support of his party, his constituents, and his colleagues. Santos insisted Thursday he won't resign "until those same 142,000 people" in New York who elected him "tell me they don’t want me." “I don’t think he should be here, that’s for sure.
“George Santos’ campaign last year was a campaign of deceit, lies and fabrication,” Nassau County GOP Chairman Joe Cairo said at a news conference with other party officials. But House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said that Cairo’s call for Santos’ resignation doesn’t affect his thinking on the issue. The New York State Conservative party said it stands with the Nassau County GOP in calling for Santos’ resignation in a statement. It will work itself out in the end.”Nassau County GOP officials initially endorsed Santos in the 2022 election cycle. Wednesday's announcement from Nassau County officials also comes amid several investigations into Santos' campaign and other calls for him to resign.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., speaks to Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., in the House Chamber on Jan. 6, 2023. She said it’s a bad idea for the House to bring up those bills. Still, some of the more moderate Republicans acknowledge that they’ll have to make compromises with Democrats to get immigration bills signed into law. The GOP rules package adopted Monday identifies the seven bills that will get speedy votes in the House. “Many of their radical things will be stopped in the Senate because we have a Democratic majority,” Schumer said, vowing not to let ultraconservative lawmakers defund the FBI.
WASHINGTON — After a grueling five-day, 15-ballot floor fight for speaker, House Republicans on Monday night will face what's expected to be the first of many tough legislative battles ahead: Passing a package of rules that will govern how they run the House over the next two years. These are the easy part[s], the speaker vote and the rules vote," Gonzales said on Fox News on Monday. Because of their razor-thin majority, McCarthy’s leadership team can only afford to lose four GOP votes on the rules package for the new Congress. GOP leaders, including new Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, indicated Monday that they believe Republicans will be able to stick together and pass the rules package. "Obviously the rules package is the first piece allowing us to get started with our agenda to fight for the American people," Scalise told reporters.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy became House Speaker Saturday morning after conceding to far-right lawmakers. On CBS's "Face The Nation," Rep. Nancy Mace condemned Rep. Matt Gaetz for capitalizing on the vote. "I ran out of things I could even imagine to ask for," Gaetz told CNN after the 15th vote. "We don't know what they got or didn't get," Mace told Brennan, condemning the "backroom" deals. Representatives for Mace, Gaetz, and McCarthy did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
GOP Rep. Nancy Mace spoke about her new colleague, Rep. George Santos, on CBS News. She said it will be "very difficult" to work with Santos because he's proven untrustworthy. "It's very clear his entire résumé and life was manufactured until a couple days ago when he finally changed his website." While also appearing on "Face the Nation," GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales defended him by simply saying, "there's a lot of frauds in Congress." "I mean, George Santos is the least of this country's worries," he added.

Jan 6 (Reuters) - South Carolina's Republican-created congressional map deliberately split up Black neighborhoods in Charleston to diminish their voting power and must be redrawn, a three-judge federal panel ruled on Friday. The Republican-controlled legislature adopted the map last year after the 2020 U.S. Census as part of the once-a-decade redistricting process that all states complete. Friday's decision focused on the state's 1st congressional district, which has long been anchored in Charleston County. The judges – all three appointed by Democratic presidents – gave the state legislature until the end of March to submit a new map. No elections can take place in the 1st district until it has been redrawn, the panel said.

Fractured teams lose,” GOP Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, co-chair of the centrist-leaning Main Street Caucus, told CNN, pointing to McCarthy’s broad support among the conference. But one member told CNN they also conveyed concern to McCarthy about restoring the motion to vacate the speaker’s chair. “He’s open to a lot of things,” Norman told CNN, including adopting the motion to vacate the chair rule. “I’ve said this over and over again: there is not this, like, enormous amount of drama,” Moore told CNN.
CNN —The House Republican Conference is still entrenched in an internal war over whether to reinstate an arcane rule that would empower any member to bring up a vote to oust a speaker at any time. WASHINGTON—House Republicans across the ideological spectrum implored some conservative members to drop their efforts to tank GOP leader Kevin McCarthy’s bid for speaker, warning that Democrats could end up selecting the next speaker if the party didn’t unify behind him. In a closed-door meeting on Tuesday morning, lawmakers lined up to voice support for the California Republican. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, an outspoken populist ally of former President Donald Trump, enthusiastically backed Mr. McCarthy’s bid, as did Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, who occasionally crosses party lines and has regularly sparred with Mrs. Greene.

House Oversight ranking member James Comer said he's investigating President Joe Biden. Comer has long alleged that Hunter Biden's business dealings have compromised his father. The announcement marks an escalation of the House GOP's probe into Hunter Biden. To date no evidence has substantiated GOP claims that Hunter Biden's work influenced policy decisions made during his father's three stints in the White House or that Joe Biden has somehow profited from Hunter's dealings. Comer outlined plans to rake President Biden's scandal-plagued youngest son over the coals before the midterm elections, billing Hunter Biden as a national security risk.
