Activist Commentary: Starboard is a very successful activist investor and has extensive experience helping companies focus on operational efficiency and margin improvement. On July 15, Starboard sent a letter to Match highlighting various opportunities to improve operations, financial results and capital allocation. Match's EBITDA margin of 36% may be high for an average company, but it's low for a company like Match. Starboard thinks that this is a highly valuable asset that may be well-suited to operate as a private company. Starboard is not the first activist to launch a public campaign at Match.

Elliot has observed hedge funds expressing bullishness on the dollar in two main ways. Hedge funds are also taking long positions in exchange-traded funds specific to sectors likely to benefit from a loosening of regulatory constraints. In response, Elliot says hedge funds are moving into short positions on long-duration bonds, which is five years or more. Finally, given the rising uncertainty around inflation and deficit spending, hedge funds have shifted to increasing their positions in gold by buying gold futures contracts, he said. These contracts set up agreements on the purchase of a predetermined amount of gold at a set price by a set date.

Elliott Management has taken a significant stake in coffee chain Starbucks and is engaging with management to find ways to improve the company's share price, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The firm did not hold a Starbucks stake as of March 31, its most recent disclosure. In April, the company reported disappointing quarterly results, with U.S. same-store sales falling 3% and traffic dropping 7%. Starbucks reported rates of incomplete mobile app orders in the mid-teens and said occasional customers came in less often. Southwest Airlines made the list after receiving 28 downward EPS revisions, resulting in a consensus estimate that fell 35.1% in the three months. I found out during a live comedy show that the former president had been shot at. The second comic confirmed what the first one said, and joked that if this had happened in another era, they probably would have canceled the show. But at this point we’re all so primed for political chaos and inured to news of fresh violence that the audience — including me — barely reacted. For all of the focus on an energy transition, the American oil industry is booming, extracting more crude than ever from the shale rock that runs beneath the ground in West Texas. The stocks of some oil and gas companies, such as Exxon Mobil and Diamondback Energy, are at or near record levels. The industry’s revival after bruising losses during the Covid-19 pandemic is due largely to market forces, though Russia’s war in Ukraine has helped. U.S. oil prices have averaged around $80 a barrel since early 2021, compared with roughly $53 in the four years before that. That the price and demand for oil have been so strong suggests that the shift to renewable energy and electric vehicles will take longer and be more bumpy than some climate activists and world leaders once hoped.

In the letter, Smith wrote that Tinder enjoyed enviable and viral growth for years but has been stymied of late by sluggish innovation. Marathon Oil agreed to spend $241.5 million to resolve federal allegations that it unlawfully emitted methane, a planet-warming greenhouse gas, and other pollutants from oil and gas facilities in North Dakota. Under the proposed settlement announced on Thursday, the oil and gas producer, based in Houston, would pay a $64.5 million civil penalty. The federal government said it was the largest-ever fine for alleged violations of the Clean Air Act that took place at stationary infrastructure. The settlement is part of a wider effort by the E.P.A. to rein in greenhouse gas emissions at oil and gas facilities.

That pullback has materialized and according to our Elliott Wave analysis of the bitcoin chart, support has possibly been formed in the zone of $59k - $49k. Looking at the 3-chart overlay below you'll find bitcoin, gold, and US 10-year yields since 2020. First is that gold and Bitcoin (blue and orange) have a very close positive correlation. Pulling it all together higher rates have a negative impact on all three; bitcoin, gold, and the stock market, which are all showing a positive relationship in recent months. In summary, being very bullish on the stock market, I would like to see bitcoin and gold move higher along with lower US yields.

When comparing personal wealth data with homeownership, a curious pattern emerges: Many states with high homeownership rates have lower income levels and vice versa. According to Federal Reserve data, West Virginia’s average personal income of $52,585 per capita is the second-lowest in the US. However, despite its relatively low personal income levels, it has the highest homeownership rate of all 50 states, at 77%, according to US census data. Mississippi—the only state with a lower average personal income than West Virginia—has the third-highest homeownership rate in the country. Even West Virginia, which counts three out of every four housing units in the state as owner-occupied, isn’t insulated, Sansalone said.

Southwest Airlines announced Monday that it's adding former US Airways CEO Rakesh Gangwal to its board of directors. The latest defensive maneuver aims to blunt Elliott's accusations that Southwest's board is long-tenured and insular. Gangwal was CEO of the now-defunct US Airways in the late 1990s and early 2000s, before founding Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo in 2006. Southwest announced the board expansion less than a week after it adopted a shareholder rights plan, limiting investors' ability to grow their stakes beyond a 12.5% threshold. Elliott is seeking the ouster of Kelly, Southwest's CEO before becoming executive chair, and Bob Jordan, who has served as Southwest's CEO since 2022.

Activist investor Elliott Management said Monday it would mount a proxy fight to push for change at Southwest Airlines through a special shareholder vote unless management is willing to negotiate, citing a poison pill and board expansion that the investor views as "entrenchment maneuvers." Elliott in its letter to Southwest's board said it remained open to collaboration, but that the board had taken steps to box Elliott out. A proxy fight would be expensive and challenging for Elliott and Southwest Airlines. Activist investors can mount proxy fights if they are seeking to force change in a company's leadership or operations. Companies usually settle with Elliott, one of the most successful activist investors, rather than risk taking on the activist in a proxy battle.

Rather than sparking typical cheer on Wall Street, Elliott's campaign, spelled out in a 50-page presentation, led to confusion and concern among investors and customers. Several activism experts pointed to two of Elliott's past targets for insight into the hedge fund's strategy for Southwest: Suncor Energy in 2022 and Marathon Petroleum in 2019. Elliott partner John Pike, who is now leading the Southwest campaign, was involved in the firm's actions at both energy companies. Pike and portfolio manager Bobby Xu are leading Elliott's Southwest campaign. But in 2018, a few months after reaching an agreement with Elliott, Marathon announced it was only getting bigger.
