The reorganization is partly a sign of the times. Until the university established the center, the 41-year-old Mr. Kendi had never run an organization anywhere near its size. On Wednesday, Boston University announced it was conducting an inquiry into complaints from staff members, which include questions about the center’s management culture and the faculty and staff’s experience with it, as well as its grant management practices. The university said Friday that the center has raised nearly $55 million and its endowment contains about $30 million, with an additional $17.5 million held in reserves. The bulk of the donations came from pledges made during the first year, and the university reported $5.4 million in cash and pledge payments in the most recent fiscal year.

Priscilla Chan and husband Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to eradicate human disease by 2100. One researcher's excited by the potential, but said it'll likely take lots of time and money to complete. The data could be used to make new discoveries that completely eliminate human disease, Chan and Zuckerberg said in a statement. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the couple's LLC, told The Register that they plan to have their product running by 2024. "AlphaFold has sparked a wave of innovation by showing people what's possible," Chris Bahl, the chief scientist at AI Proteins, previously told Insider.

Troops appear to have used armored vehicles to get past trenches and "dragon's teeth" defenses. They were reacting to a video showing Marder and Stryker infantry fighting vehicles pushing towards Russian lines. Crucially, he said it showed the vehicles behind Russia's fearsome layers of defenses meant to keep heavy vehicles out. Stryker armored fighting vehicles are versatile eight-wheeled weapons that were sent to Ukraine by the US in January. Marder infantry fighting vehicles, which resemble light tanks and can carry up to six people, were sent to Ukraine by Germany several months later.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden said he doubts that Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, "meant what he said” when he made a series of antisemitic and other offensive remarks last year. Almost a year ago, Adidas ended a major partnership with Ye over his statements, discontinued Ye’s line of Yeezy shoes and moved up the planned departure of its CEO. “Very unfortunate, because I don’t think he meant what he said and I don’t think he’s a bad person. The break with Ye left Adidas with a huge supply of unsold Yeezy sneakers that it has begun to sell in limited batches. The company has not said how many of those shoes remain in inventory, although the unsold shoes and Ye's departure impacted Adidas profits.

Ukrainian soldiers retook two villages south of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, a think tank reported. The attacks inflicted "severe" damage to Russian troops, The Institute for the Study of War said. The respected Institute for the Study of War said Ukrainian troops breached a strategic defensive line that Russian forces tried to hold onto in the area south of Bakhmut, citing Ukrainian military officials. The Ukrainian recapture of the villages — Klishchiivka and Andriivka — likely left Russian forces battle-worn and less able to fight. Ukraine's advance into new villages is the latest example of its steady but costly progress in the monthslong counteroffensive.

NEW YORK (AP) — Some organizations representing minority journalists say they're worried that outlets reporting on their communities will be left behind in a recently-announced $500 million initiative aimed at boosting the struggling local news industry. They urged that Press Forward Initiative, a group of 20 funders led by the Knight and MacArthur Foundations, to more explicitly commit to funding these outlets, particularly those run by minorities. “They're sort of skirting around it,” said Martin Reynolds, co-executive director of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, on Tuesday. The letter to Press Forward sent on Tuesday was signed by the Asian American Journalists Association, the Indigenous Journalists Association, the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. The organizations that spoke out on Tuesday said they “didn't hesitate to applaud” when the latest funding initiative was announced, and pleased that “improving diversity of experience and thought” was set as part of the mission.

President Trump has a commanding and seemingly very enduring lead. Trump, who leads his nearest rival for the Republican presidential nomination by some 40 percentage points in opinion polls, is skipping the second debate, just as he did the first one in Wisconsin last month. Perino, a co-moderator of the Sept. 27 debate, said none of Trump's rivals managed to alter the dynamic of the nominating race in that first debate. With voting in the nominating contest starting in Iowa in January, Trump's Republican rivals are running out of time to halt his march to becoming the Republican standard-bearer, despite his myriad legal troubles. Is Travel Insurance Worth It?
  + stars: | 2023-09-05 | by ( Kat Tretina | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +12 min
Trip cancellation and interruption coverage is the most common form of travel insurance, making up nearly 90% of travel protection plans sold. Travel medical: When you travel to another country, typical health insurance plans — including Medicare — don’t cover you. Like all forms of insurance, travel insurance policies don’t cover every event that can impact your vacation. “When you travel using airline miles and hotel points, most credit card travel insurance policies won’t cover the trips,” says Huffman. “If you do not get travel insurance, you are rolling the dice,” says Hines, who adds she always recommends travel insurance to her clients.

Russia's military bloggers are mad over escalating drone attacks on home soil. They have often highlighted problems within Russia's military which were not acknowledged by officials or Russia's closely-controlled mass media. Their anger was prompted by an increasing number of drone attacks, likely organized by Ukraine or Ukraine-affiliated groups. And some of these strikes have destroyed and damaged Russian military aircraft sitting on home soil. Military analysts told The Wall Street Journal that Ukraine has probably disabled more Russian aircraft sitting in Russian bases than it has aircraft involved in combat.

Russia's conviction rate for AWOL soldiers soared to 100 a week, UK officials said. Mediazona, citing data from the websites of military courts as of July 19, reported a dramatic increase in cases of Russian soldiers absent without official leave (AWOL) since March 2023. By June, Russian military courts were handing out 100 sentences per week, the outlet said. "Although some soldiers have refused to fight and attrition rates remain high, Russia highly likely mitigates their loss by committing a mass of poorly trained soldiers to the frontline." In addition to low morale, the respected Institute for the Study of War think tank stated last week that the Russian military is suffering from infighting and shortages.

Even as the import ban kicked in, tables were filled at Japanese restaurant Fumi in Hong Kong on August 24, 2023. Kathleen Magramo/CNNHours before China’s announcement, the Asian financial center of Hong Kong – a semi-autonomous Chinese city – imposed its own ban on aquatic product imports from 10 Japanese regions including Tokyo and Fukushima. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has reportedly “strongly” requested via diplomatic channels that China “immediately overturn” the ban. Ukraine only needs to advance 10 miles to "crush the Russian army," says a war expert. They apply military math and calculate that Ukraine does not need to advance 50 miles to "crush the Russian army and strangle the troops in frontline fortifications"— 10 miles will suffice to make headway, wrote Kallberg.
