London CNN —Police in the British capital shot dead a man who was reportedly trying to enter a property armed with a crossbow in the early hours of Tuesday, according to a statement. The man, who police say is thought to be in his 30s, “was threatening to harm residents inside the address,” reads the statement. Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the 1960s pop group the Shangri-Las, whose hits included “Leader of the Pack,” has died. Menachem Daum, a filmmaker who co-produced a groundbreaking 1997 documentary that illuminated the cloistered world of America’s Hasidim, died on Jan. 7 in a hospital near his home in Borough Park, Brooklyn. She said Mr. Daum had been treated for congestive heart failure. The resulting film offered a complex portrait of a religious group usually depicted as somber and impenetrable; here it offered scenes of Hasidim joyfully dancing. Mr. Daum, though ultra-Orthodox, was not Hasidic himself. And although he had earlier made a film about caregivers for the aged, he was scarcely a seasoned filmmaker.

Federal prosecutors on Friday announced charges against a German businessman, alleging he scammed investors out of more than $150 million in a crypto fraud scheme. But in actuality, Jicha and two unnamed co-conspirators, both USI Tech executives, lured and defrauded investors in a "multilevel marketing scheme," prosecutors allege. Around the spring of 2017, Jicha and his co-conspirators began "aggressively promoting" USI Tech, prosecutors said. In 2018, as regulators began scrutinizing USI Tech, prosecutors alleged that Jicha terminated the company's U.S. operations, preventing investors from withdrawing their money. Since then, around $150 million of that money has been transferred to accounts controlled by Jicha, prosecutors said Friday.

Disney is beginning to roll out a Hulu integration on its Disney+ streaming platform in a bid to bundle subscribers. The company offers a bundle of Disney+ and Hulu, but Wednesday's release is part of a push to integrate the two platforms. Disney last month agreed to buy the remaining one-third stake in Hulu that was owned by Comcast's NBCUniversal. The Hulu integration is available to people who subscribe to the bundle, albeit in a limited form for now, according to a post on Disney's website.

A close above 4,796.56 on the S&P 500 would confirm that the index has been in a bull market since bottoming out on Oct. 12, 2022, by one commonly used definition. By that definition, the bear market that began when the S&P 500 hit its previous record on Jan. 3, 2022 was not particularly painful. The S&P 500 closed down 25.4% at its lowest point, making this the fourth shallowest bear market experienced by the index since 1928, according to data from Yardeni Research. Over the last 50 years, the S&P 500 has risen an average of 16% in the three-month period leading up to a bull market. By contrast, the S&P 500 has logged average gains of just 0.2% and 2.0%, in the one-month and three-month period after a bull market is confirmed.
