REUTERS/Bing Guan/file photoAug 7 (Reuters) - Electric-vehicle parts supplier Proterra (PTRA.O) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, making it the latest company to go belly up in an industry grappling with supply chain constraints, slowing demand and a funding drought. The move comes weeks after Lordstown Motors filed for bankruptcy protection and put itself up for sale after failing to resolve a dispute over a promised investment from Foxconn. The company had a market value of $362 million as of last close. In January 2021, Proterra was valued at $1.6 billion, including debt, in a merger deal with a blank-check firm. Proterra, which makes electric buses as well as battery packs, said it intends to continue to operate in the ordinary course of business.

The company now expects to produce between 20,000 and 23,000 vehicles in 2023, down from 32,000 to 36,000 units projected in May. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File PhotoAug 4 (Reuters) - Google-parent Alphabet (GOOGL.O) said on Friday it had slashed its stake in Robinhood Markets (HOOD.O) by nearly 90%, days after the trading app said it had turned a profit for the first time as a public company. Shares of the company, whose trading platform was at the center of a meme stock frenzy in January 2021, have lost 86% since hitting their peak in August of the same year. To counter this weakness in its mainstay trading business, Menlo Park, California-based Robinhood is looking for new revenue streams. In its regulatory filing, Alphabet said it had around 612,214 shares in Robinhood as of June 30, compared with 4.9 million shares in the first quarter ended March 31. As of Robinhood's last close on Thursday, Alphabet's stake would be worth just about $7 million, according to Reuters calculations.

Aug 1 (Reuters) - Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N) warned of a fall in third-quarter sales and margins on Tuesday as dealer inventories rose again, stoking worries that demand for its heavy machinery used in everything from construction to mining may have peaked. Caterpillar, seen as a proxy for global economic activity, said on Tuesday it was expecting third-quarter sales and operating profit margin to be higher than in the previous year, but lower compared to the second quarter. The manufacturer reported a $600 million increase in dealer inventory in the second quarter from a year earlier, primarily in its energy and transportation business, as drilling at North American rigs shows signs of weakening. Meanwhile, Caterpillar reported an adjusted profit of $5.55 per share in the second quarter, beating analysts' expectations of $4.58 per share. Sales rose 21.6% to $17.32 billion, above Wall Street estimates of $16.49 billion.

A driver in Alpharetta, Georgia in June reported that a two-week-old Tesla Model Y was coming out of a shopping center when "suddenly steering wheel did not steer. The driver said it "currently remains at Tesla for the next 3 weeks while we await a new steering rack/motor."

Like leisure carrier Alaska Air (ALK.N), JetBlue said soaring demand for long-haul international trips has led to a drop in domestic travel.
