Bitter cold is gripping large parts of the South once again this weekend, creating hazardous conditions for millions in a region not accustomed to freezing temperatures. On Saturday morning, it was 5 degrees in Louisville, Ky., 9 degrees in Nashville, 20 degrees in Little Rock, Ark., and 21 degrees in Atlanta. Several states were under wind chill advisories and other freeze warnings as frigid temperatures were expected to continue into Sunday. The extreme cold, which followed days of subfreezing temperatures earlier in the week, was not limited to the South, with single-digit temperatures reported from the Northern Plains to New England.

As Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani highlighted in a note to clients Thursday, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has been an early winner among the spot bitcoin ETFs that were approved last week. However, the fund has seen about $1 billion in net outflows over the past week, according to FactSet. Even with the GBTC outflows, the spot bitcoin funds have still seen hundreds of millions of net inflows, according to FactSet. "GBTC at 150 bps fee vs. ~20bps fee for rest, would mean cheaper ETFs will continue to absorb GBTC outflows. In that context, $900m of net inflows remains impressive," Bernstein's Chhugani said in a note.

CNN —Pope Francis on Sunday said he hopes to make his first trip to his homeland of Argentina since becoming pontiff more than a decade ago, as the South American nation grapples with an economic crisis. New Argentine President Javier Milei, who once called Francis “an envoy of Satan,” last week formally invited the pontiff to the country, which faces triple-digit hyperinflation and soaring poverty. It’s a difficult moment for the country,” the 87-year-old pope told talk show “Che Tempo Che Fa,” on Italian channel Nove. The “possibility of making a trip to Argentina in the second half of the year” is being considered, possibly after a visit in Polynesia in August, Francis said. “I would make the trip to Argentina if it can be done.

Plunging temperatures have put much of the country in a deep freeze this holiday weekend, combining with snow, freezing rain, ice or gusty winds in some places to endanger nearly 100 million people from Northern California to coastal Maine. Forecasters said hundreds of records gauging the cold could be broken this week, as frigid air gripped a huge swath of the nation, including southern cities like Dallas, Memphis and Little Rock, Ark. Other places braced for sleet or snow, with Buffalo, N.Y., expecting up to two feet of snow. While some people hunkered down indoors, stocking up on food and firewood, others braved the cold to attend events for the Iowa caucuses, cheer on their favorite teams at the Chiefs-Dolphins N.F.L. playoff game or go skiing, among other activities.

The Securities and Exchange Commission's approval of 11 spot bitcoin ETFs this week could be a turning point for cryptocurrency investing. Her firm partnered with 21Shares to launch the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF. "We really believe this is an important moment for us to help with the democratization of bitcoin access, giving more people access," Wood told "ETF Edge" on Monday. The first-ever batch of spot ETFs began trading Thursday. "It's also very much part of a new wave of disruptive technology," the firm's president and co-founder told "ETF Edge."

The small-cap Russell 2000 has dropped close to 4% against a fractional gain in the S & P 500 year to date. In broad terms, the S & P 500 could retreat to 4600 or so – about 4% down from here – and still be in a routine technical check-back to its latest launch point in early December. Todd Sohn of Strategas notes that the Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) saw inflows go vertical last year to $13.5 billion, 30% above its prior 12-month record. Betting on 'peacetime' Fed cuts Right or wrong, the market debate right now can never get far before turning into a Fed-policy-path discussion. Last week's CPI and PPI data added to the market's collective conviction that inflation's downside momentum is strong, opening the way for "peacetime" Fed rate cuts.

Here's what a bitcoin ETF actually means for investors

A false statement saying the regulator had approved a bitcoin ETF was published Tuesday on the SEC's social media account on X, formerly known as Twitter. CNBC runs through everything you need to know about the bitcoin ETF milestone. As crypto investors look to assess what the market impact of a bitcoin ETF might be, many are comparing Wednesday's news to the greenlighting of the SPDR Gold Shares ETF — the first-ever spot gold ETF — in 2004. A bitcoin ETF opens up the audience of people and institutions that can buy and sell bitcoin to those with little experience trading cryptocurrency. "There is now a U.S. bitcoin spot ETF, and bitcoin is no longer considered shady or infamous.

Dollar gains on yen, bitcoin edges up before expected SEC decision

The SEC was expected to announce later in the day whether it will approve applications from asset managers Ark Investments and 21Shares (ABTC.S) to launch a spot bitcoin ETF. More than a dozen bitcoin ETF applications - including from BlackRock (BLK.N), Fidelity and VanEck - are also pending with the agency. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) due out on Thursday is the next likely driver of dollar direction. It is expected to show that headline inflation rose 0.2% in the month and by 3.2% on an annual basis. Anticipation of a positive SEC decision on ETFs, which is likely to draw billions of dollars in new investments, has boosted bitcoin prices in the past two months.

Simeon Hyman, ProShares' global investment strategist who manages the largest bitcoin futures ETF, the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) that launched in October 2021, noted that bitcoin futures ETFs have tracked bitcoin "fairly well." SEC approves bitcoin ETFs for some investment firms

The SEC had a deadline of January 10 to offer a decision for just one of the 11 firms that applied to offer bitcoin ETFs. Bitcoin ETFs, like bitcoin, carry risks for investorsFor those considering jumping on the bitcoin bandwagon, it’s important to note that the price of a bitcoin will be just as volatile whether you invest in it directly yourself or through an ETF. Those sentiments have been echoed by many financial advisers and the investor watchdog group Better Markets, which strongly opposed the SEC’s approval of bitcoin ETFs. (AP) — Arkansas election officials on Monday said online news personality Cenk Uygur, who was born in Turkey, can't appear on the state's Democratic presidential primary ballot next year. The determination comes weeks after Uygur proclaimed that he had become the first naturalized citizen on a presidential ballot after filing paperwork with the state and the Arkansas Democratic Party. “My office has received your candidate filing paperwork,” Arkansas Secretary of State John Thurston said in a letter to Uygur. Reed Brewer, a spokesman for the Arkansas Democratic Party, said based on past court rulings, the party didn't have authority to determine whether Uygur was eligible for the ballot. “Because of the vagaries of state law, rejecting a filing is simply not an option for us,” Brewer said.

The key catalyst for stocks will likely continue to be the expected trajectory of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. In September, historically the weakest month for stocks, the S&P 500 fell nearly 5%. The S&P 500 gained nearly 9% gain in November, historically a strong month for the index. Overall, December has been the second-best month for the S&P 500, with the index up an average of 1.54% for the month since 1945, according to CFRA. Many other names have languished: The equal-weighted S&P 500, whose performance is not skewed by big tech and growth stocks, is up around 6% in 2023.
