The Louisiana Republican was first elected to the House in 2016 and serves as vice chairman of the House Republican Conference, as well as GOP deputy whip, an assistant leadership role. During Trump’s first impeachment trial in January 2020, Johnson, along with a group of other GOP lawmakers, served a largely ceremonial role in Trump’s Senate impeachment team. There were 25 House Republicans who voted for someone other than Jordan – a higher number of GOP votes against him than in the first two failed votes in a sign that opposition to his bid is growing. Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy speaks to reporters as he walks to the House Chambers in the Capitol on October 18, 2023 in Washington, DC. Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesFormer Speaker Kevin McCarthy argued interim Speaker Patrick McHenry already has the powers that some in the anti-Jim Jordan crowd want him to have. “I think you shouldn't have to do a resolution, that McHenry can carry this on as we elect Jim Jordan our speaker,” he said. “We're going in, we want to elect Jim Jordan, and if Jim's numbers drop, it's a lot of that is due to Gaetz’s email that he put out last night,” said McCarthy. As of now, neither House Majority Leader Steve Scalise nor Rep. Jim Jordan – the two declared GOP candidates in the race – have locked down 217 votes, the necessary number to be elected speaker by a majority vote of the full chamber. The uncertain vote math has raised questions over how and when the GOP majority will be able to elect a new speaker, particularly as infighting continues to roil House Republican ranks. “I’d put it at 2%,” he said when asked by a reporter what the chances are there will be a new House speaker by Wednesday. After his removal as speaker in a historic vote last week, McCarthy announced he would not run again for the post. Read more about the race for House speaker here.

High yield bond funds tout sweet yields, but swirling concerns around the economy are spurring questions on how much longer the income party will last. Consider that the 30-day yield on the SPDR Bloomberg Short Term High Yield Bond ETF (SJNK) is 8.78%. Indeed, the Morningstar U.S. high yield bond index has a year-to-date total return of 4.61%, compared to the -1.29% total return on Morningstar's U.S. corporate bond index . Consumers are also a focal point when it comes to the economic outlook, according to Peter Higgins, head of fixed income and senior fixed income portfolio manager at Shelton Capital Management. Being selective about risk UBS is neutral on high yield overall, but positive on short-dated high yield paper of good quality companies.

In the meantime, House Republicans have no clear leader heading into next year's election as they cling to a razor-thin majority. The leadership fund will shift its alignment to follow the new House speaker once one is elected. McCarthy visiting a district could often be a major draw, juicing fundraiser proceeds, though that’s a role any new House speaker can grow into. “That’s where McCarthy has crushed it,” said Cam Savage, a longtime Republican strategist who works on House races. “After this week’s chaotic episode, House Republicans have basically upgraded to a Disney fast-pass in their never-ending roller coaster ride to the radical right,” said Viet Shelton, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the party’s House campaign arm.

Novak Djokovic takes the U.S. Open title at age 36

(Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)Novak Djokovic won the U.S. Open men's final Sunday, cementing his place as one of the sport's greatest players and fortifying his status as the athlete with its most men's Grand Slam titles. At 36, Djokovic is retirement age in professional tennis. The win may have been redemption for the champion, who lost to Medvedev in the 2021 U.S. Open final. That Russian thwarted Djokovic's attempt to take all four major championships in a calendar year, a rare feat last accomplished in men's open competition by Rod Laver in 1969. That French Open title was the 23rd major singles title for Djokovic, breaking a tie with long-time rival Rafael Nadal, winner of 22 Grand Slam titles.

His 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3 victory over Russian Daniil Medvedev brought him not only a fourth Flushing Meadows title but a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam crown, and Djokovic wants more. "Occasionally asking myself, why do I need this still at this stage after all I have done, you know? I do have these questions in my head, of course," said Djokovic. AGONY AND ECSTASYSunday's win will also go a long way to banishing some of Djokovic's less fond memories of New York. As he basked in the glory of his win, Djokovic had no words of comfort for those hoping to replace him.

Led by Coco Gauff and a cast of charismatic upstarts, tennis hit a sweet spot at this year’s U.S. Open with a diverse blend of old and right now, signaling the game is freshly and firmly energized as it enters a new era. At this tournament, the commanding arrival of Gauff, who won the women’s singles title Saturday evening, along with memorable performances by Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, proved that thinking wrong. At the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, a quartet of legends no longer stifled the game, overshadowing the sometimes stalled forward motion of the young players coming behind. You could feel it on the grounds, which filled with so many spectators that it often appeared there was no space to move without bruising a shoulder. This year’s event set attendance records nearly every day.
