How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

[1/2] British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak speaks during the opening session of the Global Food Security Summit at Lancaster House in London, Britain November 20, 2023. Years of political churn - with five prime ministers and a non-stop ministerial carousel since the 2016 Brexit vote - have shaken Britain's reputation for stability among investors. Some executives say the country, long a magnet for FDI, has simply taken them for granted. But companies and investors say that a focus by regulators on limiting costs for bill-payers in sectors such as water, telecoms and energy has crimped investment. British investment minister Dominic Johnson said the government would be in listening mode at the gathering on Nov. 27 to hear how it can remove hurdles.

That's certainly what ESPN executives thought, and they wanted to tie in Stevenson's fight against Edwin De Los Santos for the vacant WBC lightweight world championship with the opening night of the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix. It certainly makes sense from a programming standpoint, giving ESPN a Las Vegas lead-in as it promotes both events. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum told fighthype.com that's also why a fight will take place on the Thursday before the Super Bowl, which is Feb. 11 in Las Vegas. Top Rank president Todd duBoef said, however, other events such as the NFL draft in Las Vegas last year had other attractions tied to them that made the overall experience a success. That led to discussions about staging a fight night that could feed off the F1 publicity and even draw those in town primarily to see the race.

But right now, the unit's operations are shut down as regulators investigate the safety of Cruise's self-driving vehicles. Cruise had $1.7 billion in cash as of Sept. 30, enough to last nine months at the current cash burn rate. As Cruise's troubles intensified, investors on Thursday sent GM shares down more than 3% to $26.65, its lowest closing price since August 2020. In addition to the problems at Cruise, GM last month agreed to a costly new contract with the United Auto Workers, and scaled back plans to expand electric-vehicle production. Cruise, the autonomous vehicle venture owned by General Motors , has issued a recall effecting 950 of its robotaxis following a pedestrian collision in San Francisco last month. The Oct. 2 collision triggered a federal probe. According to the Cruise filing with the NHTSA on Nov. 7, following the collision, Cruise found defects within its automated driving system software, specifically pertaining to its "Collision Detection Subsystem." This issue could occur after a collision with a pedestrian positioned low on the ground in the path of the AV." After Cruise lost its permits in California and faced a public backlash over safety concerns, the company also temporarily suspended production of its Cruise Origin driverless vans.

Still, the US presence highlighted the deepening ties between Hollywood and the region , as Western media, entertainment, and sports entities have seen major investment in recent years from Saudi, Qatar, and the UAE. Even before October 7, US entities that were receiving investment from the Middle East were reluctant to speak publicly about those relationships. Insider spoke with investors, producers, and other media and entertainment stakeholders about what's next for Hollywood's relationships with Mideast backers. Qatar hasn't seen any recent major deals but earlier this year, Peter Chernin and Providence Equity's production roll-up The North Road received $150 million from the Qatar Investment Authority. To the Editor:Re “The Moral Deficiencies of a Liberal Education,” by Ezekiel J. Emanuel (Opinion, Oct. 22):In my upper-level Georgetown University ethics course, “Ethics of Global Leaders,” a discussion of the conflict between Hamas and Israel devolved into chaotic and accusatory yelling. There were high emotions, but almost no discussion of practical ethics. Little was learned because students, billed as the world’s future leaders, lacked a moral vocabulary, one strong in substance and cognizant of nuance, to discuss the situation. Fixing this will take time, but it starts with instilling a moral vocabulary through embracing disagreement. Students must learn to discuss, not disregard, the opinions of those whom they vehemently disagree with.
