Safety officials at one New York beach are ramping up the use of drones to try to prevent potentially dangerous interactions between humans and sharks. Lifeguards and New York State Park Police officers at Jones Beach — a state park that stretches 6.5 miles along the Southern coast of Long Island and sees six million visitors a year — are using the technology to monitor the waters off the shore. When they spot sharks or unusual sea life activity, they can warn swimmers to stay on the beach. The next day, lifeguards at Jones Beach closed the water three times after possible shark sightings, two of which were made with drones. New York State Park PoliceThe technology has uses beyond searching for sharks, too.

The sky was clear over Rockaway Beach in Queens early Saturday afternoon. Lifeguards scanned the still waters, dotted by a few swimmers, and occasionally blew whistles to warn those who ventured too far into the ocean. The woman, Tatyana Koltunyuk, had been swimming alone near Beach 59th Street when she was bitten on the left leg, officials said. Jose Velez, 64, was at Beach 59th Street on Saturday with his wife, brother, sister-in-law and nieces and nephews. The family comes to the beach every year, he said, and had “never, never, never” heard of such an attack.

Mr. Kalmann grew up one of four boys in the Netherlands. Mr. Kalmann jumped in and pulled two of the men to shore. Initially, Ms. Jacobus’s friends warned her that it was too dangerous and pointed out that she would be working more hours as a lifeguard than she did as a social worker. But like Mr. Kalmann, she felt a deeper calling. She is the daughter of a Lutheran pastor and grew up doing volunteer work before entering social work.

For the unlucky few who experience shark attacks, the ordeal is undoubtedly terrifying. Yet every summer, stories about shark attacks top homepages. Unlike shark attacks on humans, which are mainly attributed to curiosity, we know exactly what we’re doing. Throughout, the great white is characterized as a dogged predator obsessed with human flesh. I’d never suggest that the victims of shark attacks had it coming, or that cinemagoers should feel an iota of shame.

Paris CNN —A swimming competition that was supposed to serve as a test event ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics was canceled due to poor water quality in the Seine, casting doubt over the French government’s audacious plan to clean up the famous river before next summer. The decision to cancel the event, the Open Water Swimming World Cup, was made by World Aquatics in consultation with the French Swimming Federation (FFN) and public health authorities. “World Aquatics is disappointed that water quality in the Seine has resulted in the cancellation of the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup, but the health of our athletes must always be our top priority,” said World Aquatics President Husain Al-Musallam. Contingency measures, such as postponing competitions due to water quality, are also being planned. Paris 2024 said that in the coming days the water quality will be “carefully” monitored.

REUTERS/Lee SmithAug 5 (Reuters) - At least 57 participants fell ill after competing in sea swimming events at the World Triathlon Championship Series in Sunderland, North East of England, the Guardian newspaper reported on Saturday. After a swim off Sunderland’s Roker beach last weekend, those who fell ill complained that they were suffering from sickness and diarrhoea. The triathlon event in Sunderland served as the British leg of the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series and coincided with the qualification period for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. You may have heard that wearing bright colors may provoke shark attacks. Curiously, the tale goes, every man taken to his watery grave had one thing in common — they were all wearing orange pilot suits. This is a popular story in shark communities and is likely the origin of the myth that shark attacks may be caused by wearing bright colors, like yellow or orange. Sharks can't see color very wellThough Gruber's 1977 work confirmed sharks have sharp vision, it stopped short of drawing conclusions about color. Yellow and orange are the best colors to wear if you end up in a dangerous situation and want to be spotted by rescuers.

An unusually high number of people were bitten by sharks in early July near New York. Prior to last year, New York had a very low number of shark bites, according to the Florida Museum International Shark Attack File. While the localized spike is unusual, the total number of unprovoked shark bites worldwide has averaged about 74 per year. Why sharks bite humansThere are roughly 520 species of sharks, according to the University of Florida. "Shark bites are a function of the number of sharks, but also the number of humans in the water," he said.

Paris CNN —Back in the 1980s, when I first began living in Paris, I once had to clamber onto the tiny exterior staircase that surrounds the Eiffel Tower and is used to paint or repair it. Still, at that time, nothing could have impelled me to risk a swim in that other iconic Parisian sight — the Seine River — not without a full biohazard suit. Today’s Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has made a similar promise, and local authorities have put 1.4 billion euros ($1.55 billion) behind it. Paris has indeed made strides in cleaning up its famous river — water samples from June showed “excellent results” in complying with European regulation, according to city hall. There were just 57 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks last year, out of a global population of 8 billion, five of which were fatal. However, some places around the world have much higher rates of shark attacks than others, with the numbers rising with the passing years. Let’s take a look at the locations worldwide with the highest rates of shark attacks between 2012 and 2021 and the reasons they’ve become hot spots. South Africa (29 bites)South Africa had 29 unprovoked shark bites between 2012 and 2021, of which six were fatal. South Carolina (45 bites)None of the 45 unprovoked attacks in South Carolina in the decade-long time frame were fatal.

Yet just as public pools become more important than ever, they’re disappearing from sight. Today, the city has five public pools for a population of around 640,000, ranking 89 out of the largest 100 cities in swimming pools per person, according to Trust for Public Land, an advocacy organization for public parks and land. Private pools, like these in Southern California, have replaced public pools in recent decades. When America built poolsWhile public pools are a rarer sight today, governments built enormous pools during the twentieth century. The water temperature near Key Biscayne, a barrier island just east of Miami, had already passed 89 degrees one morning this week. And though the ocean off South Florida was slightly cooler than the recent record highs that had stunned scientists and threatened marine life, it remained phenomenally hot. But on this serene patch of the Atlantic Coast, it was still a summer day at the beach, when nothing satisfies quite like a dip — even when the ocean feels like a thick, simmering syrup. “I like it warm,” shrugged Niki Candela, 20, a Miami native, moments after a powerful siren warned of approaching lightning. The shallow water was a crystalline teal, rolling oh so gently, not a cresting wave in sight.

For years, swimming in the Hudson was widely considered hazardous to your health, a trend that was reversed in no small part by the signing of the Clean Water Act of 1972, according to Dan Shapley, the senior director of advocacy, policy and planning program at Riverkeeper, an environmental nonprofit that monitors water quality and safe swimming spots. Both the state and the city health departments advise that bathers swim at regulated beaches, which are monitored for dangerous bacteria and other contaminants, with officials posting regular updates. New York City’s harbor is still “not considered a swimmable portion of the river,” according to the state environmental officials, but up the Hudson, open swims — ranging from polar dips to full-blown triathlons — abound. Still, Mr. Shapley added that this summer’s violent downpours have caused wide swaths of the river to be considered unsafe on occasion, as sewers have overflowed and other contaminants have run off into the Hudson, including animal waste, street garbage and bird guano. (Interestingly, one famed pollutant — PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, which made the Hudson the nation’s biggest Superfund site — are less of a concern for swimmers, as they usually collect in mud and on the bottom of the river.)

CNN —Shark patrols are ramping up off Long Island beaches after five people were bitten in two days by marine animals that are likely sharks, authorities say. Officials in Long Island’s eastern Suffolk County, where three of the attacks occurred, have increased beach patrols and are using drones to scour the water for potential threats, the Suffolk County Police Department said Tuesday. Though no sharks were seen by the girl or anyone nearby at the time of the incident, the bite was most likely from a shark, Gorman said. Also Tuesday, a 15-year-old boy was bitten on his foot by a shark while surfing off Fire Island’s Kismet Beach, Suffolk police said. Three more people were bitten on Tuesday, including a 47-year-old man swimming in chest-deep water off of Long Island’s Quogue Village Beach, local police said.

Over the past decade in the US, there were, on average, 71 deaths per year due to rip currents, according to the National Weather Service. This year, 11 people died over the course of two weeks due to rip currents along the Gulf Coast, CNN reports. Here's some more advice on how to spot rip currents and swim out if you're caught in one. Rip currents are often mislabeled as rip tides, but unlike tides, they aren't solely caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and sun. How to spot a rip currentIt can be difficult to see a rip current, especially if it's wide.
