The developers would only need to reveal the training material that is “sufficient to identify with certainty” whether the copyright holder’s works were used. Failing to comply would create a legal assumption — until proven otherwise — that the AI developer did indeed use the copyrighted work. Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., who introduced the bill Thursday, said the country must “set a higher standard for transparency” as AI continues to integrate itself into Americans’ lives. “We need to give America’s musicians, artists, and creators a tool to find out when A.I. Companies that rely on human creative labor have tried to take on AI developers as well.

It’s a “capital junkie” that’s been on a yearslong binge of unprecedented spending on all-electric and autonomous vehicles. Capital junkieThe latest cost-cutting cycle comes nearly a decade after an infamous Wall Street presentation by late-Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne called “Confessions of a Capital Junkie.” The April 2015 report highlighted the industry’s massive capital spending on overlapping or niche products that Marchionne was convinced could be solved through consolidation and shared capital spending. That’s shareholder money.”Most capital spending by automakers isn’t wasted, but the industry isn’t as efficient as other sectors, with minimal return on invested capital. While losing ground in China, GM has been among the most aggressive in spending on EVs and self-driving vehicles. GM and Hyundai this summer entered into an agreement to explore “future collaboration across key strategic areas” in an effort to reduce capital spending and increase efficiencies.

A ransomware attack on one of Starbucks’ software vendors has disrupted how the coffee chain’s baristas view and manage their schedules, the company said on Monday. Starbucks said it’s working closely with the vendor to resolve the issue. The outage affects Starbucks’ employee platform that shows baristas their schedules and allows the company to track how many hours employees have worked. The interruption has not affected customers directly, and Starbucks said it’s continuing to serve people in its cafes. As ransomware attacks have surged, 2024 is on track to be one of the worst years on record.

Macy’s on Monday said an employee responsible for managing accounting for small package deliveries concealed up to $154 million in expenses over the course of nearly three years. Macy's said it discovered the issue while preparing its financial report for the three-month period ending Nov. 2. The company said the employee, who was responsible for the accounting of small package delivery expenses, "intentionally made erroneous accounting accrual entries" to hide about $132 million to $154 million from the fourth quarter of 2021 through the most recently completed quarter. The independent investigation hasn't identified any other Macy's employee, the company said. Chipmaker Intel and the CHIPS Act Office are close to finalizing a deal which would award the company a roughly $8 billion grant, according to a person familiar with the matter, as the Biden administration moves to dole out funds before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. The U.S. awarded Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. a $6.6 billion grant earlier this month, raising investor expectations that cash funding for Intel would come soon. Intel has benefited from CHIPS Act tax breaks but has not yet received cash awards, something which Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has expressed dissatisfaction with. "We're frustrated that hasn't moved faster," Gelsinger told CNBC in October, referring to the CHIPS Act grants. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously said he might look to repeal the bipartisan CHIPS Act, but he then walked back those comments.

On the first trading day since Donald Trump chose the billionaire financier Scott Bessent as his pick for Treasury secretary, investors seem to be signaling they like the choice. Bessent does,” Paul Donovan, chief economist of UBS Global Wealth Management, wrote in a research note on Monday. The Key Square Group founder overcame serious opposition from some in Trump’s inner circle. On Wall Street, a document was circulated suggesting that his Key Square hedge fund had underperformed the booming markets. Bessent’s ascent is notable in that he doesn’t appear to have been on Trump’s radar during his first administration.

His firm, Key Square Capital, struggled to generate returns despite its strong pedigree. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday reviewed investors' reaction to President-elect Donald Trump's latest cabinet pick, hedge fund manager Scott Bessent. His takeaway is that Wall Street believes the potential Treasury secretary will be a prudent force in the administration. "What matters is that this Treasury secretary designate is a serious person, not unlike Steven Mnuchin before him," he said "And those who believed Trump couldn't get a dollop of rigor in the cabinet — well, they've been proven wrong." Cramer also pointed out that Treasury yields fell, with the 10-year sliding to about 4.28% when investors were worried about it hitting 4.5% a few days ago. "That's where Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary designate, comes from, so the fence sitters and skeptics are jumping on the Trump bandwagon as if the president elect said, 'higher stock prices and lower taxes for all.'"
