“The impact on Delta passengers was disastrous,” the lawsuit said. In other cases, it would only offer partial reimbursement if passengers signed a waiver releasing the airline of any legal claims. On Monday, July 22, Delta canceled more than 1,250 flights — making up nearly 70% of all domestic cancellations, the lawsuit said. In response, Delta offered Plaintiff a $100 voucher to use towards a future flight with Delta,” the lawsuit said. Both companies claimed Delta ignored their repeated offers for help as passengers were left stranded in airports across the country.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian lashed out at CrowdStrike in a CNBC interview last week and said the computer problems cost Delta $500 million. To the Editor:Re “Lives at Risk” (Science Times, July 23):The New York Times spotlights malaria, which kills nearly half a million African children annually, and the important role malaria vaccines are playing in reducing child deaths. The malaria vaccine pilots, for which the World Health Organization provided scientific and technical leadership, demonstrate the critical role W.H.O. advanced the first malaria vaccine (RTS,S) at the request of member states, even as global health partners focused their attention on other agendas. The pilots provided assurance that the vaccine is safe and highly effective — reducing child deaths by 13 percent. In some areas, combining the vaccine, insecticide-treated nets and chemoprevention can reduce malaria by more than 90 percent.

Flanked by another two of the U.S.-made combat aircraft, Zelenskyy announced on Sunday that the country's air force had already started operations using the warplanes against Russia. A number of Ukraine's European allies have pledged to send F-16s to Ukraine, and the first batch arrived in the country in late July. Russia has dismissed the supply of F-16s, with Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying last Thursday that Russian forces were prepared to shoot down the F-16 jets. The first General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon received by Ukraine is seen on the Day of Ukrainian Air Force on August 4, 2024 in Unspecified, Ukraine. "The jets will considerably enhance Ukraine's ability to prevent Russian pilots entering Ukrainian air space, and can also target Russian cruise missiles in flight.

Less discussed, however, is a parallel crisis in corporate America: a wave of aging business leaders who refuse to step aside. The average retirement age is similarly increasing: to 62 in 2024 from 57 in 1991. Using public data from 1992 to 2018, they assessed the relationship between a CEO's age and their "managerial ability," as measured by how they turned company resources into revenue and profit. "A 10% increase in CEO age is associated with a 1.9% decrease in managerial ability," they wrote. And older workers, both above and below the traditional retirement age, already face unwarranted discrimination in the workplace.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said on Sunday that his army had received a first batch of F-16 fighter jets. The long-awaited arrival of the Western-supplied jets should bolster the country’s defenses, although Kyiv appears to have received too few of them so far to have an immediate impact on the battlefield. Russia maintains air superiority over Ukraine and the F-16s offer a significant improvement in Kyiv’s weaponry. “Now is a new chapter in the Ukrainian Air Force. More F-16 jets are expected to arrive in Ukraine and “many of our men are currently studying and training,” Zelensky said. Officials later confirmed to the Associated Press that some F-16s were indeed in Ukraine. Peter Layton, a fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute who served in Australia's air force, said Ukraine would have to be cautious. Ukraine also faces challenges when it comes to logistics around the F-16s.

Williams's research doesn't bode well for the world's armrest-clutchers. That means more clear-air turbulence — the kind that's not associated with storms or mountains, and can sneak up on pilots. Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)His research group found that, by 2020, severe clear-air turbulence in the North Atlantic had increased 55% over 1979 levels. Korean Air said that the move was “part of a proactive measure” that is “aimed at preventing burn accidents.”“To enhance passenger satisfaction and diversify snack options, a self-service snack bar is also available on long-haul flights. The reality of the American air travel system is that powerful forces keep passengers flying the same carriers, even after service meltdowns like Delta just suffered. For passengers who live near one of the hubs where Delta controls most of the flights, such as Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis or Salt Lake City, choices are even more limited. But by Monday, the problems were mostly limited to Delta as other businesses were back to normal, adding to the frustration of its passengers. Delta canceled more than 4,400 flights from July 19 to 21, according to tracking service FlightAware. Past experience, plus the dominance of Delta in Atlanta and Don Hooper’s frequent flyer miles, would keep them using the airline.
