Bull statues are placed in font of screens showing the Hang Seng stock index and stock prices outside Exchange Square, in Hong Kong, China, August 18, 2023. The S&P 500 (.SPX) gained overnight and MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) rose 1.3% to a two-week high in morning trade. "I actually don't think we need to increase rates anymore," Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic told the American Bankers Association, to applause, in Nashville on Tuesday. On Wednesday the Australian and New Zealand dollars hit their highest levels on the dollar since the end of September, while sterling hit a three-week peak. European gas prices, which had jumped on news of the Middle East violence, surged further on Tuesday on concern a gas pipe in Finland was sabotaged.

Futures pricing suggests traders now see about a 30% chance of another rate hike this year, down from about 45% a week ago. Ahead on Wednesday, the European Central Bank's inflation survey and U.S. producer price data will lead in to U.S. inflation data on Thursday. The S&P 500's retreat on Tuesday from the day's high, closing only 0.5% firmer, also suggests nervousness. Later in the week U.S. corporate earnings season hits full swing, with bank profits set to rise. Overnight markets welcomed Pepsi (PEP.O) promising to keep on lifting prices, which is a good sign for demand but perhaps a warning sign for inflation.

Following the comments from top Fed officials on Monday, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said the U.S. central bank does not need to raise interest rates any further, and that he sees no recession ahead. "Everybody has one eye on the Middle East conflict and one eye on what's happening with bond yields. The decline in bond yields is the key driver today," said John Praveen, managing director & co-chief investment officer at Paleo Leon. "If tensions escalate bond yields might decline further because they're a safe haven but equities would sell off in that instance because of increased uncertainty and risk aversion," he said. But the flight to safety has made Treasury yields fall enough to push up equities," Tuz said.

New York CNN —Price hikes for Pepsi products boosted the company’s bottom line, despite a decline in sales, according to the company’s third-quarter earnings, released Tuesday. The snack and beverage giant said it increased prices globally by 11% on average, helping nudge revenue higher than analysts’ expectations, despite PepsiCo’s volume falling 2.5%. Net sales for the third quarter rose nearly 7% to $23.45 billion. Similar to other food companies, Pepsi has increased prices to mitigate inflation. Consumers should also expect to see the new Pepsi logo, unveiled last March, on its products soon.

REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 10 (Reuters) - PepsiCo Inc (PEP.O) said on Tuesday it planned "modest" price hikes next year as demand held up despite multiple increases that prompted the snacks and beverages giant to raise its 2023 profit forecast for a third straight time. Shares of the company, which owns brands including Mirinda, and Gatorade, rose nearly 2% in early trading after third-quarter profit beat estimates. Average prices jumped 11% in the quarter ended Sept. 9, while organic volume slipped 2.5%. Adjusted profit of $2.25 per share topped expectations of $2.15, according to LSEG data. PepsiCo forecast fiscal 2023 core earnings per share of $7.54, up from $7.47 earlier, while maintaining its annual organic revenue growth forecast at 10%.

Pepsi has long way to go to win Ozempic challenge

The purveyor of Gatorade and Cheetos boosted operating profit 14%, to about $4 billion, after hiking prices by at least 10% for the seventh consecutive quarter. The quantity of drinks and snacks sold is slumping, however, and anti-obesity drugs are just starting to make their mark. Pepsi’s shares have tumbled 14% since May, lagging the 5% gain in the S&P 500 Index (.SPX) over the same period. The head of Walmart’s (WMT.N) U.S. drugstores told Bloomberg that customers taking Ozempic, Wegovy and others are pulling back on junk-food purchases. The latest results from Pepsi quelled fears of any immediate impact, but also raise questions about the future.

S&P 500 (.SPX) companies overall are expected to have increased earnings by 1.3% from a year ago, according to LSEG IBES. After a rough September for stocks, "we need some good news" from earnings season, said Matthew Miskin, co-chief investment strategist at John Hancock Investment Management. Inflation dampened company earnings in the first half, after consumer prices surged in 2022 to their highest levels in decades. Investors will also scrutinize company fourth-quarter outlooks, with S&P 500 earnings for the fourth quarter currently expected to rise 10.8% from a year earlier. One clue could come from the consumer discretionary sector (.SPLRCD), where earnings are expected to have jumped by 23.1% from the year-ago period.

I see the benefits in kidsWhen I was in high school, I avoided anything but the most basic attempts at school spirit. AdvertisementAdvertisementAfter attending a university with unabashed school spirit and spending over two decades as an academic advisor to middle school, high school, and college students, I've seen the many ways school spirit days can have a positive impact on connection, collaboration, and creativity. At a time when so many students feel isolated among peers, school spirit days can facilitate community bonding by increasing interaction and engagement. For elementary school students, focusing on a few school spirit days with a simple theme that do not require last-minute costume shopping reduces adult overwhelm.

CNN —A late deflected goal from Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal a potentially huge victory in the Premier League title race, beating Manchester City 1-0 on Sunday. Man City huffed and puffed, and struggled to break down a resolute Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium as it records its second defeat in a row. We know how tough it is to play against them,” Martinelli told the Premier League afterwards. And his deflected goal was the crowning moment of a complete performance for Arsenal, one which reemphasizes the team’s title aspirations and hands Man City successive league defeats. We started really well with chances, two or three,” Guardiola told the Premier League afterwards.

CNN —Manchester United’s terrible start to the season continued Saturday as Erik ten Hag’s team fell to a 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace in the English Premier League. The defeat to London-based Palace was United’s second successive home defeat and fourth in seven league games, leaving Ten Hag’s team 10th in the league on nine points. It is United’s worst start to a Premier League season after seven games – and the club’s worst in the top-flight since the 1989-90 season, according to Reuters. City had won every league game this season and was expected to beat a Wolves team which had won just once in the league. But Pep Guardiola not only suffered a first league loss of the campaign but the second of the week, following the League Cup defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday.

The omission of Hwang's name was noted, and Wolves made sure it was spelled out when he scored -- posting his picture on social media with the caption "The Korean Guy".
