Of the billionaires on the 2023 Forbes 400 list — the 400 richest people in the United States — 70% are basically self-made. In 1982, only 40% of the Forbes 400 had started their own business; the majority were simply scions of inherited wealth. The Forbes 400, however, is the extreme right tail of the curve. But you're not sniffing the Forbes 400 list, where the bidding starts at about $3 billion. I don't think VCs are deliberately picking founders they think are unreliable, although sometimes it seems like it.

Organizations are shifting to hybrid cloud and on-prem IT infrastructure for more control over data. Rather than depending solely on third-party cloud services, they're looking to operate their IT data networks on-site. Depreciation costs could lead to AI stock price declines and valuation scrutiny, according to Baird's Ted Mortonson. AdvertisementThe lurking problem is that the useful lifetime of AI GPU chips can be a lot shorter than many expect, especially as AI chips go through an ever-accelerating innovation cycle, leading to higher-than-expected depreciation expenses that ultimately drag down profits. For example, the bank expects Alphabet to record $28 billion in depreciation costs in 2026, which is 24% more than current consensus estimates of $22.6 billion. AdvertisementBut even that has its limits because of how quickly Nvidia is releasing new GPU chips. And for Mortonson, it all comes back to the return on invested AI capital.

According to public announcements, the firm has made four acquisition deals so far in 2024, exactly even with Nvidia's 2020 deal total. Nvidia declined to discuss its acquisition strategy for this report, citing a quiet period before it announces earnings on August 28. In May, Nvidia agreed to acquire Deci AI, another Israeli startup that makes tools for developers to build AI models, for $300 million. In July Nvidia competitor AMD announced an agreement to acquire Silo AI, a Finnish AI startup, for $655 million. And this quiet trickle of deals in various forms is unlikely to stop since the market for AI talent is so tight.

Meta is in discussions with Awkwafina, Judi Dench and other actors and influencers for the right to incorporate their voices into a digital assistant product called MetaAI, according to three people with knowledge of the talks, as the company pushes to build more products that feature artificial intelligence. Apart from Ms. Dench and Awkwafina, Meta is in talks with the comedian Keegan-Michael Key and other celebrities, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the discussions are private. The EU Commission on Thursday said it had unconditionally approved the $14 billion takeover of networking gear maker Juniper Networks by Hewlett Packard Enterprise . People familiar with the matter on Monday already said HPE was set to secure approval for the deal announced in January. The takeover underscores the rush by companies to upgrade and develop new products amid a sharp rise in artificial intelligence-driven services. The deal is also being assessed by Britain's antitrust enforcer, with a decision due on Aug. 14.
