To the Editor:Re “Haley Will Vote for Trump, but Withheld Endorsement” (news article, May 23):Nikki Haley adds her name to the ever-growing list of prominent Republicans who at one time or another have been on record as being highly critical of Donald Trump, including questioning his fitness for office, and have changed their tune. What stands out about Ms. Haley, and which makes her cravenness all the more disheartening, is that she presented herself as a serious, thoughtful candidate, one who had no illusions about the myriad dangers that Mr. Trump poses to the country. Her ultimately falling in line with so many of her fellow sycophantic Republicans to support Mr. Trump, a man whom I suspect many of them loathe in private, speaks volumes about how the G.O.P. has been utterly co-opted in a manner that places political expediency and, in the case of potential vice-presidential candidates such as Ms. Haley, personal ambition over principle and respect for the rule of law. To the Editor:Years into America’s flirtation with fascism, it would be easy to roll your eyes and ask yourself, “What did you expect?” at Nikki Haley’s announcement that she will vote for Donald Trump this year.

Washington CNN —Top Republicans are already rushing to buy into a new 2024 election fraud narrative sown by ex-President Donald Trump in their zeal to appease their party’s presumptive nominee. The new Republican trend of casting doubt on the integrity of the 2024 election in advance was exhibited by Sen. Ted Cruz on Wednesday in an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins. Despite Trump’s claims of voting irregularities, multiple courts, including the US Supreme Court, rejected the former president’s claims he was cheated out of power. The positioning looks a lot like laying the groundwork for a challenge to the fairness of the 2024 election if Trump loses in November. The meeting was part of an ongoing effort by the Biden campaign to reach out to Haley voters. It was organized by the Haley Voters Working Group. “A lot of these people in this group are big supporters of Nikki Haley and want to support her in 2028,” he said. Nikki Haley’s announcement on Wednesday that she’s going to vote for Donald Trump wasn’t that much of a surprise. Eight years ago, she basically did the same thing: She was critical of him before he got the nomination, then once he did, said she’d vote for him and sort of faded into the background, before her surprise arrival in the administration. She’ll probably end up in the vice-presidential conversation again, even though Trump already said she won’t be, partly because he seems to like the curveball consideration. And, of course, she has now done what many of the skeptics thought she’d do: say she’d vote for Trump. Most of the failed candidates would probably say they were voting for Trump, as most Republican officials you can think of have been saying they would do for years — and the far more active issue would be that Trump would be the nominee.

Kristi Noem of South Dakota, a biography that will be released on Tuesday, will be corrected to remove a false anecdote about her meeting Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, a spokesman for Ms. Noem said on Friday. Ms. Noem’s new book also includes an error about when a phone call with Nikki Haley took place. That will be corrected in future editions of the book, too, said Ian Fury, the chief of communications for Ms. Noem. “It was brought to our attention that the upcoming book ‘No Going Back’ has two small errors,” Mr. Fury said. Kim Jong-un was included in a list of world leaders and shouldn’t have been.”

CNN —Former President Donald Trump will make his foray back onto the campaign trail Wednesday for the first time since his New York criminal hush money trial began in earnest last month. Trump advisers see openings with critical working class voters unhappy with inflation, and with Arab American voters who disprove of Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war. But they are still in the early stages of building out the teams, according two senior Trump campaign advisers, which they say will be a mix of paid staffers and volunteers. “That’s a colossal disaster for him,” one of the senior Trump advisers said, and it is something they plan to message on aggressively in the months ahead. Recent campaign filings with the Federal Election Commission show Biden’s principal campaign committee entered April with $85.5 million, while Trump’s main campaign account had $45.1 million in its war chest.
