CNN —After a rollercoaster week for Silicon Valley Bank’s customers, some prominent voices in the tech world are now publicly saying they will keep their money with the embattled lender – and they’re urging others to do the same. It also comes after the regional bank’s saga sent shockwaves across global financial markets. The push to continue doing business with Silicon Valley also highlights the unique relationship between the tech lender and the startup community, and their mutual dependence on each other. The bank has worked with nearly half of all US venture-backed tech and health care companies. But not everyone shares the desire to stay loyal to the bank after its implosion.
"It's a pretty classic risk-off day," said Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Baird in Louisville, Kentucky. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) closed 0.81% lower, while Japan's Nikkei (.N225) rose 0.25%. Benchmark Treasury yields dipped after Powell's remarks, and the inversion between 2-year and 10-year Treasury yields, a harbinger of potential recession, steepened. Benchmark 10-year notes last rose 4/32 in price to yield 3.9696%, from 3.983% late on Monday. The 30-year bond last rose 18/32 in price to yield 3.8794%, from 3.912% late on Monday.
REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File PhotoNEW YORK, March 7 (Reuters) - Wall Street stocks plunged, the greenback surged and Treasury yields dipped on Tuesday as Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell concluded the first day of his semi-annual, two-day monetary policy testimonial before Congress. In a broadly risk-off session, the dollar gained strength and inversion between short- and long-dated Treasury yields touched their widest since 1981 as the testimony reaffirmed the Fed's determination to bring inflation down to its 2% target rate. European shares extended their losses after Powell's prepared remarks fueled rate hike worries. Benchmark Treasury yields dipped after Powell's remarks, and the inversion between 2-year and 10-year Treasury yields, a harbinger of potential recession, hit its steepest differential in over four decades. Benchmark 10-year notes last rose 2/32 in price to yield 3.9754%, from 3.983% late on Monday.
Equities appeared in a holding pattern until Fed boss Jerome Powell delivers testimony about monetary policy this week. The 10-year Treasury yield edged higher after pulling back at the end of last week. "I think we'll be in a holding pattern until we get that nonfarm payrolls report," said Mayfield, referring to jobs report due out this Friday. "But I do think nonfarm payrolls could be interesting to see if there's a revision or not to the January number. The whole shift in the tone of markets started at the beginning of February when we got that January nonfarm payrolls number," Mayfield said.

By Martha C. WhiteThe Fed is set to send savings and CD rates higher yet again. On Wednesday, the Fed announced a quarter-percentage-point interest rate increase to its benchmark federal-funds rate, following its Jan. 31-Feb.1 meeting. Policy makers’ economic projections released in December show that Fed officials don’t expect inflation to hit 2.1% until 2025. “It’s going to be slow, but I think the trend is going to be higher” rates. If that’s your bank, he adds, you “absolutely should be taking advantage of a higher rate savings account.”
In protests that followed the killing and the police sweeps, six people were arrested and charged with domestic terrorism. In December, the same charges were filed against five people after law enforcement moved in to clear barricades and confront protesters. But in a number of states, including Georgia, domestic terrorism laws include a wide range of offenses outside those motivated by hate. The Atlanta Solidarity Fund said that the state of Georgia was trying to “set an alarming precedent” with the charges. “If they are successful, protesters across the country could be facing similar speech-chilling ‘domestic terrorism’ charges,'” it said in a statement this week.
What began as a peaceful protest and vigil in Atlanta honoring a slain activist ended in property damage and several arrests on Saturday. The chaotic night came after nearly two years of organizers and activists imploring city leaders, raising awareness and protesting the city’s plans to build a sprawling police training center in a forest near Atlanta. We went through City Council, we’ve taken the legislative route, we’ve done tons of advocacy, we’ve sent in letters, and all we’ve been responded with is force,” said Matthew Johnson, a supporter of Defend the Atlanta Forest, one of the movements opposing plans for the new Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. It has become the focus of protests in several cities across the country to “Stop Cop City.” In recent weeks police shot and killed an activist, demonstrators destroyed property, and several protesters were arrested and face steep charges. Here is how the tension over Atlanta’s “Cop City” reached a boiling point.
Stop us if you've heard this one before: A lot of people think the economy may be headed for a recession. It's everywhere: A recent poll of economists from the Wall Street Journal pegged the recession chances in 2023 at 61%. Even 96-year-old former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has weighed in, saying that a recession is "the most likely outcome" given the current economic trajectory. A short, shallow recession may be priced into marketsEconomists aren't the only ones who have recession on the brain. Overall, investors and economists alike expect a "fairly mild kind of recession, " says Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA.

It's a continuation of a relatively strong 2022 in which foreign stocks shed 14.5% compared with an 18% loss for U.S. names . "International stocks are set up quite well," says Ross Mayfield, an investment strategy analyst at Baird Private Wealth Management. Investing experts point to a handful of factors that have boosted the performance of international stocks of late. "Now that it's come back down, it's relieved a lot of the pressure on international stocks." "The sector mix for international stocks is more compatible with the economy we've seen," says Mayfield.

Minneapolis CNN —America’s central bank found itself in a glaring spotlight for much of this past year, as Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell wielded blunt tools of interest rate hikes and quantitative tightening to curb surging inflation. That means the Fed, with its “laser focus on the job market,” could be “continually hawkish” at the start of 2023, said Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Baird. “This latent strength in the job market could be the reason that the Fed over-tightens,” he told CNN. Jerome Powell, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, from right, Lael Brainard, vice chair of the board of governors for the Federal Reserve System, and John Williams, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, during a break at the Jackson Hole economic symposium in Moran, Wyoming, on Aug. 26, 2022. That’s 0.2 percentage points higher than the 4.4% rate they were expecting in September and significantly higher than the current 3.7% rate.

Investors who stuck to the traditional portfolio breakdown of 60% allocated to stocks and 40% allocated to bonds were hit hard this year as both asset classes shed value. Bonds also lost value for investors this year, going against the traditional correlation where they act as a hedge to stock market volatility. Still, most analysts don't expect the year to yield a worse performance than 2022 for the standard 60/40 portfolio. That bodes well for investors who still have a traditional portfolio balance. And even though the traditional 60/40 portfolio had a dismal 2022, investors shouldn't write it off.
