Hong Kong CNN —Shanghai was brought to a standstill on Monday morning by what authorities say was the strongest typhoon to directly hit the Chinese financial hub in more than seven decades, with flights, trains and highways suspended during a national holiday. Typhoon Bebinca made landfall in an industrial suburb southeast of the metropolis of 25 million people around 7:30 a.m. local time. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) said it packed top wind speeds of 130 kilometers per hour (80 mph), the equivalent of a Category 1 Atlantic hurricane. The storm is the strongest to make landfall in Shanghai since 1949, according to Chinese state media. The China Meteorological Administration on Monday issued a red typhoon warning, its most severe alert, warning of gale force winds and heavy rainfall in large swathes of eastern China.

CNN —A California man is facing federal charges after he allegedly tried to choke a flight attendant and “said he was going to kill everybody” while on board a Frontier Airlines flight to San Francisco that had to be diverted on Monday, authorities said. “Flight attendants investigated and discovered that Salva had his hand in the overhead compartment,” the US Attorney’s Office said. During the incident, Salva yelled obscenities at flight attendants and allegedly said, “We are all going to hell,” and “This airplane is going down,” the release said. The flight attendants did not feel safe trying to put Salva back in his seat, and the flight was diverted to Ontario International Airport, the release said. The single highest individual penalty, $40,823, was issued to a traveler who brought their own alcohol on board, was intoxicated, attempted to smoke marijuana in the lavatory, and sexually assaulted a flight attendant – all in a single flight.

An Alaska Airlines plane was forced to abort takeoff at Nashville International Airport in Tennessee after a Southwest Airlines flight was cleared to cross from the same runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Alaska Airlines Flight 369 was headed to Seattle on Thursday morning and had received clearance to take off from air traffic control, the airline said in a statement, when Southwest Airlines Flight 2029 was cleared to cross the end of the same runway, the FAA said. The Alaska pilots had to brake so hard and fast that the tires on their plane blew out, the airline said. Damaged tires on the Alaska Airlines jet at the Nashville, Tenn., airport after takeoff was aborted Thursday. It said it sent another plane to Nashville to take them to Seattle on Thursday night.

A Delta aircraft clipped the tail of another plane Tuesday morning at an Atlanta airport. Video taken at the airport appears to show the Endeavor plane with its tail hanging off the side of the aircraft. As end-of-summer travel lines back up at TSA airport checkpoints in the U.S., one overseas airport is going all-in on a biometric passenger experience. The Smart Travel Project at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi will involve biometric sensors at every airport identification checkpoint by 2025. Airport security and travel experts have generally cheered the move. "Facial recognition is the future, and we will start to get intelligent with airport security and focus on the traveler rather than the items they bring. Among the concerns expressed are what type of data someone would need to give during the biometric enrollment process, and whether biometric security processes will be used to track movements throughout the airport, or if biometric data will be used outside the airport.
