Former Marine Paul Whelan said he was devastated when a Biden administration official told him WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner was being released from Russian detention after nine months and he was not. The official told him that to free Griner, the U.S. had traded convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s price for releasing the celebrity athlete. “It was a sham.”When he refused, Whelan said he was placed in a cell where the lights were left on around the clock. After he was sentenced to 16 years of forced labor, the Russian trial judge said he would probably be released in two weeks. “The prison food is even worse.”They subsisted, Whelan said, on tea, bread, watery soup, “the kind of fish only Russians eat.

WASHINGTON — With just two weeks left in the 2024 campaign, there currently are no plans for Vice President Kamala Harris to appear on the trail with President Joe Biden before Election Day, according to three Harris campaign officials and three White House officials. Biden last appeared with Harris at a campaign event nearly seven weeks ago, on Labor Day in early September. That’s a contrast to former President Obama, who has headlined a series of Harris campaign events, and former President Bill Clinton who has also been on the trail for the vice president. First lady Jill Biden has headlined multiple events for the Harris campaign as well and is set to hit the trail for her again on Wednesday in Nevada. White House and campaign officials say the president understands the strategy behind his downsized role in the campaign, even if at times he doesn’t like it.

Former President Donald Trump called rival Kamala Harris a "s--- vice president" during a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Saturday evening, punctuating his broader argument that she is too liberal in a more aggressive fashion and with fresh vulgarity. "And then, so you have to tell Kamala Harris that you’ve had enough, that you just can’t take it anymore. You’re a s--- vice president." Trump added the catchphrase from his bygone television show "The Apprentice" to cheers: "Kamala, you're fired," he said. The Harris campaign quickly pounced on the anecdote.

CNN —Almost two weeks to Election Day, I feel more uncertain about this year’s result than any election I’ve covered professionally. Many Republicans are hoping that the close polling points to a blowout win for Trump next month. If we had a polling miss like two years ago, Harris would probably win over 300 electoral votes. Jonathan Drake/ReutersYou might be tempted to guess the direction of a potential polling miss by the macro trends. Ironically, only 24% of those undecided voters agree that this election is the most important of their lifetime.

The presidential race remains razor close, with control of the White House at a coin-flip. AdvertisementIn just over two weeks, Election Day 2024 will be here — a final cap to a wild, at times unprecedented presidential fight that, for the moment, remains far too close to call. Noted election forecaster Nate Silver's model now shows Trump with an extremely slight lead in what continues to remain a toss-up race. Harris trolled Trump on Friday for being "exhausted," referencing a string of interviews he has reportedly walked away from. For more on the US Senate race in Michigan, watch CNN’s “Inside Politics Sunday with Manu Raju” this Sunday at 8 a.m. The former Republican congressman blamed then-President Donald Trump’s “chaotic leadership style” for costing his party two critical Senate seats in Georgia. He said that “the spell” around Trump had been broken by the US Capitol attack, which, he said, Trump’s actions “clearly” provoked. “Well, you’re damn right you had responsibility for this,” Rogers said of Trump on January 12, 2021. WASHINGTON — Kamala Harris’ campaign posted a video that appeared to show Donald Trump nodding off at a campaign event Friday, pushing a new line of attack that the former president is too "exhausted" to run for office. "An exhausted Trump appears to be falling asleep during his campaign event," the Harris campaign posted to its X account with a clip of Trump at a campaign roundtable event in Michigan on Friday. The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment about whether he fell asleep during the business roundtable. Harris repeated similar lines hitting on Trump as exhausted during two campaign rallies on Friday. The Harris campaign echoed the sentiments again in multiple social media posts and press releases.

Operations Upon taking over Chipotle, Niccol's focus was on improving operations after the rise of digital orders complicated execution and increased wait times. The addition of shelves alone accelerated the use of Chipotle's second "make line," where digital orders are prepared in the back of the store. Rebecca Shabad and Peter Alexander report that Harris’ campaign launched ads Friday that will appear on websites dealing with sports news, sports betting, fantasy sports and video games, including DraftKings, Yahoo Sports and IGN. And the Harris campaign said it’s placing ads on sports talk radio and is taking advantage of major NFL, MLB and college football games. The ads end with the tag line: “Kamala is for they/them; President Trump is for you.”These efforts come amid the backdrop of a massive gender gap between the two candidates. Vice President Kamala Harris will hit the trail for the first time alongside the Obamas, who the campaign hopes will galvanize supporters in early voting areas in the waning days ahead of the election. Harris will hold a campaign event with former President Barack Obama in Georgia next Thursday, the first time the pair has campaigned side by side, a senior campaign official said. A week from Saturday, Harris will campaign alongside former first lady Michelle Obama in Michigan, the first time she has appeared on the campaign trail this cycle. In a major push, Democratic stars are hitting the trail for Harris in the final weeks of the campaign. In addition to his plans to campaign alongside Harris in Georgia, Barack Obama is set to hold events in Arizona and Nevada on Friday and Saturday.

Aluminum is infinitely recyclable, but Americans throw out millions of tons of it every year — mainly aluminum cans and other post-consumer scrap. At the same time, US can-recycling rates are falling drastically behind several countries. In New York City, canners are vital to making recycling work. In Michigan, two companies are revolutionizing post-consumer recycling.

The moment was carefully coordinated between aides to the president and vice president. For Harris, the complicated politics of the Middle East are unlikely to be made much easier by Sinwar’s demise. And as she headed to Michigan a day later for a three-stop swing, the fraught politics were likely to continue dogging her. The Israel war has proven a complicating factor as the vice president looks for votes among the state’s large Arab- and Muslim-American population in the Detroit metro area. Earlier this month, Harris met with Arab-American leaders in Michigan, where participants encouraged her to distance herself from Biden’s approach to the conflict.

CNN —President Joe Biden envisioned a “day after” for Gaza without Hamas in power following Israel’s killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. This is only half the story, since at times, US officials have suggested Netanyahu had interests in prolonging the war as well. The White House believes that ending the war in Gaza is a precondition for lessening the chances of a disastrous regional war that it dreads. Is really his object to release … Israeli hostages still held in Gaza? If he keeps his word, some analysts will interpret his restraint, such as it is, as an attempt to avoid alienating the possible next president, Harris.

Donald Trump on Friday dismissed more questions about whether he would release his current medical records, doubling down on refusing to provide a health update even as Kamala Harris works to sow doubts about his fitness for the presidency. The 78-year-old Republican nominee, when asked if he will release his health records, suggested that he has already shared enough information about his medical status. "Yeah, my health records – I've done five exams over the last four years. Trump told CBS News in August that he would "very gladly" release his medical records, but his campaign has not done so. That same day, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung claimed in a statement that the Republican nominee "has voluntarily released" multiple health reports.

The anxiety abated for a bit when Vice President Kamala Harris replaced him on the ticket and her poll numbers spiked. With Harris' numbers stagnant now for weeks, many Democrats are once again fretting that the election is slipping away and that Donald Trump may yet regain power. Harris appears to be OK with the collective jitters, recognizing that if Democrats fear they might lose, they're more apt to show up at the polls and help her win. Polling shows that neither Harris nor Trump has built a lead outside the margin of error. Claims that Harris is an underdog amount to “a liberal plot to get us overconfident on the Trump side,” he added.

CNN —Lebanese nationals residing in the United States will be granted a form of humanitarian relief, the Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday, citing ongoing armed conflict and conditions in Lebanon. White House officials have met with Lebanese Americans at least twice over the course of recent weeks, and there have been multiple virtual meetings and phone calls between Lebanese Americans and officials on VP Harris’ team where this issue has been raised, two Lebanese Americans familiar with the exchanges told CNN. In Michigan – where the Arab American community is a critical voting bloc – this move could boost Harris’ support, the Lebanese Americans familiar with the exchanges said. “TPS will allow us to protect Lebanese nationals who are already in the United States. More significant to the political dynamics at play, however, is how the civilian overseas vote has eclipsed military voters abroad. “As it turns out, there are more overseas civilian voters than there are military voters,” said Michael McDonald, a University of Florida political science professor. GOP congressmen suing their own stateIn the Pennsylvania case, the dispute is over how overseas ballots are being vetted. Democrats, who intervened in the case, argue that the Republican lawmakers’ request could disenfranchise “tens of thousands” of overseas voters, including those in uniform. “Our lawsuit does not in any way affect military voters’ right to vote, which is protected by federal law under UOCAVA.

How to strike a hostage and ceasefire deal, and with whom, is now a matter of uncertainty for American officials, who spent the hours after Sinwar’s death trying to determine if he had a successor. But US officials stopped short of saying Thursday that his death will result in a deal overnight. For long stretches, American officials couldn’t even say definitively whether he was alive or dead. “By all accounts, Sinwar has been the biggest obstacle within Hamas to a ceasefire-hostage release deal in Gaza.
