David A. GroganBerkshire Hathaway 's highly scrutinized cash pile could top $200 billion — more than the entire annual gross domestic product of Hungary — amid CEO Warren Buffett's rare sale of some of his favorite stocks. The Omaha-based conglomerate is likely to say its cash hoard topped the previous record of $189 billion, set in the first quarter, when it reports second-quarter earnings Saturday morning. The selling could have resumed in the second quarter as shares of the iPhone maker jumped 23% in the period. "It's just a question of how long they are going to sit on it," Andrew Kligerman, TD Cowen's Berkshire analyst, said in an interview, referring to Berkshire's enormous cash pile. Berkshire Hathaway's selling streak in its big Bank of America stake has extended to nine straight days, suggesting that Warren Buffett is not just trimming the longtime holding. The Omaha-based conglomerate sold a total of 18.4 million shares of the bank from Thursday to Monday for $767 million at an average price of $41.65, a new regulatory filing late Monday revealed. Warren Buffett surprised many investors by downsizing one of his longest held and largest positions — Bank of America . Berkshire Hathaway recently unloaded 52.8 million Bank of America shares worth $2.3 billion during a six-day selling spree, the first time since late 2019 that the Omaha-based conglomerate reduced its holding. The legendary investor said then that he liked the business, valuation and management of the Charlotte-based bank "very much." BAC YTD mountain Bank of America Tax liability Taxes could also be a motivating factor in the BofA sale. Buffett, who paid over $5 billion in corporate taxes in 2023, believes the corporate tax rate could move higher to help fill the government's yawning gap between spending and revenue.

Lamb Weston was the worst-performing stock in the S & P 500 on Wednesday on the back of disappointing quarterly results. The Idaho-based supplier of frozen potato, sweet potato, appetizer and vegetable products to restaurants said fully diluted earnings per share fell more than 70% from the year-earlier period. Consequently, the stock price fell over 28% on Wednesday. At ~ 1.2x price to sales, Lamb Weston is the cheapest it has been in the past ten years. Some of that increase is justifiable; the company demonstrated considerably higher operating volatility than they or investors expected, and the debt-to-equity increase as a function of the stock price decline is also a contributor.

However, one exchange-traded fund (ETF) has done just that, beating the S & P 500 index for five consecutive years. The JPMorgan US Research Enhanced Index Equity ETF has beaten the benchmark every year since 2019 and is also outperforming in 2024. However, it wasn't until 2018 that JPMorgan decided to marry this time-tested strategy with the increasingly popular ETF structure. For instance, JPMorgan's ETF is overweight Microsoft shares by 45 basis points compared to the weighting for the stock in the iShares Core S & P 500 ETF. Jain's hypothetical seemed prescient when a quality control issue from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused a worldwide IT outage that halted flights and freight, shuttered retail outlets, and caused hospitals to resort to charting on paper. "Insurers have been worried about something like what happened with CrowdStrike since cloud adoption happened," said Dale Gonzales, chief innovation officer at Axio, a cyber security risk analysis company. Fitch estimates that the number of insured losses will not exceed $10 billion, ending somewhere in the mid- to high-single billions and that the industry largely priced those in. The cybersecurity insurance market did get lucky, in some respects, with the CrowdStrike meltdown. "Cyber events that have more of a physical consequence would be much bigger in size or scope in terms of losses," Glombicki said.

Buffett believes buybacks are beneficial to shareholders for one simple reason: You don't need to spend a dime to increase your percentage of shares held. "Through that simple act, we increase your share of the many controlled and non-controlled businesses Berkshire owns," Buffett said in his 2021 annual letter. The 93-year-old legendary investor believes that it would be "value-destroying" if he overpaid for Berkshire shares. "If you're repurchasing shares above a rationally calculated intrinsic value, you are harming your shareholders, just as if you issue shares beneath that figure, you are harming your shareholders," Buffett once said in 1996. The Wall Street firm projected that Berkshire repurchased almost $2.5 billion worth of stock in the second quarter.

The new issue for the global supply chain comes amid a rise in global demand, with shipments up 13% year-over-year in June. Air freight supply has increased, but only by 3% year-on-year, already causing higher costs for shippers due to the limited capacity, according to Xeneta. Thousands of flights were grounded or delayed at the world's largest air freight hubs in Europe, Asia and North America.
