I was walking with a friend on a hot summer day, and the subject of women dating much younger men popped up. One of our acquaintances, a beautiful woman in her 50s, has been happily living with a man who is a decade and half younger. My usually warm friend was suddenly vitriolic. She looks terrible standing next to him! I just don’t get it.”

Secret spots on Croatia’s famous Dalmatian coast

CNN —To many, the southern Dalmatian coast is Croatia. The Adriatic coast is undeniably beautiful, with the forbidding Dinaric Alps as a dramatic backdrop to the heavily indented coastline and dozens of islands scattered about. Until 2022, reaching it from the north meant crossing into Bosnia, whose 12.4 miles of coastline sits below the Neretva delta, before giving way once more to Croatia’s southern Dalmatian coast. Elaphiti islandsWander along Dubrovnik’s old port and in seconds you’ll be offered a day trip to the Elaphiti islands, north of the city. Cavtat, about 15 miles south of Dubrovnik, has been steadily growing in popularity as an alternative to the city.

Elon Musk's control over Starlink is in the spotlight after he thwarted a Ukrainian attack. "If the Ukrainian attacks had succeeded in sinking the Russian fleet, it would have been like a mini Pearl Harbor and led to a major escalation," Musk told Isaacson. (Musk later reassured a Russian ambassador that Ukraine would not be able to use Starlink for offensive operations, according to Isaacson). AdvertisementAdvertisementAs Ukrainian officials see it, sinking Russia's fleet, if that was indeed a possibility, would have prevented hundreds of missiles from raining down on the country's infrastructure, and spared civilian lives. Even if it wanted to change Musk's mind, it is not clear that it can actually compel him to do anything when it comes to Ukrainian attacks on territory controlled by Russia.

Instacart CEO Fidji Simo's shares of the company are set to be worth at least $13.4 million once it goes public. Instacart's shoppers make as little as $4 per batch in base pay after the company cut the minimum in July. As with many IPOs, that price range could change before the company goes public. Along with some shares she previously owned, that brings Simo's total to 515,647 shares she is expected to hold after Instacart goes public. AdvertisementAdvertisementSimo could also receive an additional 900,000 shares of Instacart stock in the coming years if the company's market capitalization reaches certain goals.

That subplot puts “Red, White & Royal Blue” into a particular film and television genre: liberal wish fulfillment. Join us on Twitter and Facebook“The West Wing” is, unsurprisingly given its Sorkin-ism, much the same (observers on Reddit and elsewhere have noted Sorkin’s predilection for re-using the same lines and jokes). It was regularly cited as an inspiration for Obama staffers attracted to the show’s insider-y look at the West Wing and its characters’ fundamental decency. That emphasis on process is what makes the politics of “Red, White & Royal Blue” seem smaller than the fantasy of the electoral map hinging on Texas would lead viewers to believe. But process without vision is stultifying, and reflects more than the limits of onscreen political fantasy.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Rising U.S. business bankruptcies may raise a red flag in what otherwise appears like an economy now impervious to rising interest rates. Commenting on the numbers, insolvency research organisation ABI blamed elevated interest rates, price inflation and a resumption of student loan payments as just some of the headwinds causing stress. That partly mirrors some of built-in household resilience to rising rates related to long-term fixed-rate borrowings and still-high cash savings that now earn significantly higher rates of interest now too. And that 10% - accounting for more than 60% of index market cap - had seen no rise in net interest payments so far in the Fed campaign. But creeping insolvencies among the smaller firms - many of whom have been dubbed 'zombies' for years due to their survival solely on low interest rates - may be a better reflection of what's starting to happen at the coalface of the economy.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday called for “accountability” for the events of January 6, 2021, marking a notable departure from the White House’s policy of silence on former President Donald Trump’s legal issues. The White House has taken pains to minimize any impression that it is interfering with the federal investigations. For Biden, Trump’s third and fourth indictments are undoubtedly the most personal. The White House has declined to comment on the indictments, referring questions to the Department of Justice. Asked his reaction to Trump’s mugshot, Biden quipped to reporters, “Handsome guy, wonderful guy,” declining to comment further.

Don't expect any change, Biden advisers say, until after decisions are handed down in those trials. However, sustaining that strategy, during the most contentious and consequential judicial actions in U.S. presidential history, will be severely tested in the coming months, political strategists say. Expect Trump to use a series of criminal trials from New York City to Georgia and Florida in the months ahead to fuel a campaign deeply rooted in grievance politics. The White House and the reelection campaign are content to use the upcoming months - when Republicans are embroiled in a nasty nominating race - to pitch Americans on the success of Biden's economic policies, interviews show. Instead, the reelection campaign will try to draw attention to differences between the two candidates, officials say.

Heading home from Lake Tahoe on Saturday, President Joe Biden exchanged a week of waterfront seclusion for the more workaday realities of running the country from Washington. Like many presidents, Biden spent a good portion of August away from the White House, trading the capital’s stifling heat for the beach or the mountains. Of the first 26 days in August, Biden spent only one day entirely at the White House. He also held events at the White House marking his legislative accomplishments. The White House did detail some of the presidential tasks Biden undertook.

This, regulators say, makes it harder for banks to cut costs and absorb losses in a downturn. But many bankers are expected to resist swapping guaranteed pay for potentially higher bonuses, which can swing wildly across economic cycles. UK Finance, the industry body for banks in Britain, did not respond to the public consultation, leaving individual members to comment if they wanted to. Others warned against overplaying the significance of bonuses in Britain's battle to grow its financial sector, still reeling from the loss of big-ticket listings, such as Arm Holdings. Before I moved to Spain, I knew of two types of vermouth: white and red. Vermouth is to Spain what a pint is to Ireland or mate is to Argentina — a national pastime. Historically, people drink vermouth on Sunday mornings after church. In fact, it’s so stitched into the culture that “fer un vermut” (“to do a vermouth”) is an expression that doesn’t even require you to order vermouth. It means, let’s meet for a drink in the middle of the day (another culinary surprise).

The pastor Arza Brown had long told the congregants of Grace Baptist Church that if they left the sanctuary and gathered beneath Lahaina’s mango trees, that then their church would be under the mangoes, too. “When we talk about the church,” Mr. Brown said on Sunday, “the building is not the church. The building is just where the church meets.”This weekend, Grace Baptist was not inside the handsome blue structure two blocks from the Pacific where members had worshiped for 50 years.
