Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries and an alleged accomplice pleaded not guilty on Friday to sex trafficking and interstate prostitution charges. Jeffries’ romantic partner, Matthew Smith, who was also arrested on Tuesday on sex trafficking charges, wasn’t at the arraignment. Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson have each been hit with a single count of sex trafficking, as well as 15 counts of interstate prostitution tied to 15 alleged victims. They organized “sex events” in England, France, Italy, Morocco, St. Barts, New York City and the Hamptons for Jeffries, Smith and “others,” according to the indictment. Afterward, it was either Jacobson or the staff members who paid the men for attending the sex events, it says.

This groundbreaking research in southeastern Uzbekistan could shift our understanding of the Silk Road, a vast network of trade routes that spanned from China to the Mediterranean. But the new research shows the Silk Road network was larger than previously predicted. Although many large urban centers have been discovered in Central Asia, the vast majority of archaeologically documented cities are in lowland riparian settings. The research indicates the two cities produced iron or steel to sell, as well as providing fuel for Silk Road travelers, with the region being surrounded by dense juniper forests.

Judge William Davis refused Letby’s application for leave to appeal against the conviction from her retrial. A trove of 2,584 silver coins from the time of the Norman Conquest has been bought in the United Kingdom for more than $5 million — making it the country's highest-value discovery ever made by treasure hunters. The coins were purchased by the U.K.’s South West Heritage Trust, an independent organization that supports historical sites, with funding from two charities, the National Lottery and the Art Fund. The South West Heritage Trust's curator of archaeology, Amal Khreisheh, holds one of the uncovered Norman pennies. The coins were likely to have been buried for safekeeping, a common method in the 11th century. That they were never dug up by their owner suggests to historians that they may have been lost or abandoned because of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest.

Ariana Grande apologized to actor Cassandra Peterson — better known as horror movie host Elvira, Mistress of the Dark — after Peterson described feeling snubbed after meeting Grande years ago. Smith, 61, of West Palm Beach, Florida, was the romantic partner of former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries. Abercrombie & Fitch said it was “appalled” by the allegations and launched an independent investigation into the matter. Jeffries served as CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch from 1992 until 2014, when the company announced his retirement. That year, Abercrombie & Fitch succumbed to the pressure and announced they would begin offering plus-sizes in some clothing.

LONDON — The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday raised its 2024 growth outlook for the United Kingdom, saying declines in interest rates and inflation would boost domestic demand. The IMF now sees 1.1% growth for the U.K. economy this year, up from a July forecast of 0.7%. Inflation in the U.K. came in at 1.7% in September, a decline from 11.1% in October 2022. Economic growth has been tepid so far this year, coming in at 0.2% in August after flatlining in June and July.

The January 7 curtain-raiser sees New York Golf Club, headlined by two-time major champion Xander Schauffele, take on The Bay Golf Club. 3 McIlroy will first be in action on matchday four when his Boston Common Golf side competes against Woods’ team. Norway’s Viktor Hovland and American LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau are the other two members of the top-10 not present in the league. London CNN —A hoard of Norman-era silver coins unearthed five years ago in southwestern England has become Britain’s most valuable treasure find ever, after it was bought for £4.3 million ($5.6 million) by a local heritage trust. The coins date from one of the most turbulent periods in English history. “The hoard was buried in around 1067-1068 on an estate in Chew Valley which later belonged to Giso, the Bishop of Wells. We think it was probably buried for safekeeping during the time of rebellions against William in the South West. Finding coins that were in use almost 1,000 years ago is exceptionally rare – this hoard contains twice as many coins from during Harold II’s reign as had previously been found.

However, economists at Goldman Sachs in a Monday note forecast rate cuts "notably below market pricing." As a result, they see consecutive 25 basis point cuts taking the Bank Rate to 3% as early as September 2025, and to 2.75% in November next year. "Recent data have cemented expectations of another cut in interest rates in November. "That said, uncertainty around the economic outlook is high, and interest rate expectations will be sensitive to what the government announces in the Budget," Muir added.

U.K. net borrowing rose to £16.6 billion ($21.59 billion) in September, the Office for National Statistics said Tuesday , up £2.1 billion from the year before.
