Andy Beshear defended his sweeping COVID-19 pandemic restrictions as he faced an onslaught of criticism from Republican challenger Daniel Cameron in a high-stakes debate Monday night, coming about two weeks before Kentucky's closely watched gubernatorial election. The bitter rivals sparred over the economy, education policies, abortion and transgender issues during the hourlong debate shown statewide on Kentucky Educational Television. Democrats say that was a strategic omission meant to mask his support for school choice measures they say would weaken public education. Each candidate touted his plan for public education during the debate. Beshear has proposed an 11% pay raise for teachers and other public school personnel, including bus drivers, janitors and cafeteria staff.

Finding an answer lies in Egypt’s own challenges, and whether a nation with its own serious security problems and economic problems can be enough of a safe haven for others. Egypt has, along with Israel, blockaded Gaza on and off for 16 years, containing the enclave’s largely Muslim population while Cairo deals with its own insurgent threat in the area. Poverty and social-economic distress in Gaza were already serious problems before this war, with more than two million people crowded into one of the most densely populated areas of the world. Egypt has no love lost for Hamas, the Palestinian movement that is an offshoot of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood. The Egyptian authorities have had a fractured relationship with the Brotherhood since its founding in 1928, including several serious and violent confrontations.

Some of their sharpest exchanges during the televised debate, however, came when asked to lay out their stands on abortion. Their remarks, which took place about three weeks before the Nov. 7 election, came against the backdrop of Kentucky's current abortion law, which bans the procedure except when carried out to save a pregnant woman’s life or to prevent a disabling injury. Cameron went on the attack by pointing to Beshear’s opposition to abortion restrictions passed by the state’s GOP-dominated legislature. Beshear also made another pitch for his plan for state-funded pre-K for every 4-year-old in Kentucky. Beshear criticized Cameron for supporting a Republican-backed measure to award tax credits for donations supporting private school tuition.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Republican voter Mark Cook stuck with his party in Kentucky's last election for governor. Once again, Warren County, which includes the leafy, fast-growing college town of Bowling Green, looms as a potential swing area. Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron tried pushing national politics to the forefront of the governor's race in GOP-trending Kentucky, while Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear played up the state's record-setting economic growth under his leadership as the rivals squared off at a forum Thursday. But the challenger spent much of his time blasting away at Biden in hopes of eroding support for Beshear. The Republican-led legislature revamped the state’s tax code last year to gradually phase out individual income taxes while extending the state sales tax to more services. But the sharpest exchanges came as Cameron tried to nationalize the race.

Hadley Duvall, the Kentuckian shown in the ad, sounded unmoved by Cameron’s expression of empathy, responding: “It wasn’t really to share my story just with him. It should be their choice.”The ad went viral after its release last month, putting the debate about abortion exceptions at the forefront of the Kentucky governor's race. In the ad, Duvall talks about having been raped by her stepfather when she was 12 years old. Beshear has denounced the near-total abortion ban as extremist, pointing to the lack of rape and incest exceptions. Duvall said Tuesday that she sees Cameron's support of the current ban as untenable.

The tale provides an unlikely, ghastly background to the original 1858 ambrotype created during the future nation-saving Civil War president's ascendancy, an image which the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has added to its collection, officials said Tuesday. “Original images of Abraham Lincoln are extraordinarily rare, and images with a fascinating back story like this are even more rare," said Christina Shutt, executive director of the library and museum. The photo ... is a physical reminder of his kind spirit and concern for others,” said Ian Hunt, head of acquisitions for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Hunt, also with the library and museum, sees “a man of conviction" while noting that Lincoln would have been exhausted by the campaign trail. “This is the Lincoln that the voters of Illinois would have been familiar with,” Hunt said.

All three states lean heavily Republican in federal elections, yet Democrats currently control the governorship in two out of the three. As usual, we are rating these races on the following scale: Safe Republican, Likely Republican, Lean Republican, Toss-Up, Lean Democratic, Likely Democratic and Safe Democratic. The race moving in the Republican direction is Louisiana, which we’re shifting from Likely Republican to Safe Republican. But for now, we’ll keep it at Likely Republican. That may be in tune with Kentucky voters, who, despite the state’s Republican lean, rejected a 2022 ballot measure that would have enhanced the state’s ability to outlaw abortion.

Beshear's ad features an incest survivor who said Cameron's anti-abortion views would have left her without options. Cameron previously appeared to flip-flop over his opposition to rape and incest exceptions to bans. Cameron previously said that he supported Kentucky laws, neither of which has exceptions in the cases of rape or incest. In June, abortion rights advocates vowed to continue fighting the bans that continue to be in effect. Andy Beshear has seized a commanding fundraising lead over Republican challenger Daniel Cameron in their marquee matchup in Kentucky, their latest campaign finance reports showed. Heading into the fall campaign, Beshear had the advantage of a noncompetitive spring primary campaign, while Cameron exhausted most of his funds during a crowded GOP primary. Cameron’s campaign reported raising about $2.3 million in contributions since May. Cameron's campaign contends their grassroots support is deeper, given the state's GOP strength, especially across the vast rural stretches of the Bluegrass State. We are confident that with our conservative message, robust fundraising and extensive travel schedule, Daniel Cameron will defeat Andy Beshear,” Sean Southard, a Cameron campaign spokesman, said in a statement.
