CNN —The US carried out a series of strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen late Saturday evening, according to a US defense official, targeting numerous weapons storage facilities across at least three locations. The facilities housed advanced conventional weapons used to target ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, said the official, who added that the US used fighter jets to carry out the attack. The Iran-backed Houthis have for months targeted ships in the Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest waterways, calling the attacks a response to Israel’s war in Gaza against Hamas. The Houthis, Hamas and Hezbollah are all part of an Iran-led alliance spanning Yemen, Syria, Gaza and Iraq that has attacked Israel and its allies since the war began last year. Austin said he authorized the strikes at the direction of President Joe Biden to “further degrade” the Houthis’ capabilities.

The US has sent Ukraine and Israel billions of dollars worth of ammunition in recent years. The wars in Ukraine and the Middle East show the US how much ammo it will need for its next big war. Beyond the ammunition, the US has also sent Ukraine a significant amount of armored vehicles, air-defense systems, drones, anti-tank weapons, small arms, and more. Given Beijing's formidable arsenal of anti-ship missiles, Navy vessels would need to be well-armed with interceptors to take down these threats and defend American assets in the Pacific. The US has transferred Patriot batteries and their associated interceptor missiles to Ukraine, where they have gotten a workout against Russian missiles.

Alexenkov, the iPhone purchaser in Hong Kong, said he expected to turn a profit of up to 25% for each phone despite offering to pay 12% above the retail price to acquire those phones in Hong Kong. These attacks comprised 36 different models of missiles and drones, including Iskander ballistic missiles, Kh-59 cruise missiles and Iranian-made Shahed kamikaze drones. Related storiesNonetheless, there is a wide variation in the intensity of Russian strikes that seems to shift according to Moscow's priorities. "There were 17 days during the study period when missile launches exceeded 82 missiles in a single day," CSIS said. "Keeping this intercept rate high will require continued Western support for Ukraine," CSIS said.

CNN —Qatar is suspending its role as a mediator in talks between Israel and Hamas after concluding that the two sides are no longer negotiating in good faith, two sources familiar with the situation tell CNN. Qatar, which has long hosted Hamas’ political office in Doha, has alongside Egypt served as an intermediary for the two sides, which do not officially maintain direct contact. During a temporary ceasefire mediated by Qatar and Egypt last November, Hamas released 105 hostages and Israel released 240 Palestinian prisoners. “As a consequence, the Hamas political office no longer serves its purpose.”Hamas has insisted that any agreement with Israel must lead to a permanent end to the war in Gaza. In July he effectively spiked a draft hostage and ceasefire deal by introducing a raft of new, 11th-hour demands.

It added that of the confirmed deaths, 80% were killed in residential buildings or similar housing, of which 44% were children and 26% were women. UNICEF also said since the onset of hostilities more than 95% of schools in Gaza have been partially or completely destroyed. The report cited UN data that the number of aid shipments into the Gaza Strip was now lower than at any time over the past year. The Chinese military has increased its provocative flights around Taiwan by 300% over the last five months, according to the commander of the U.S. Air Forces in the Indo-Pacific Command. In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Gen. Kevin Schneider warned that People’s Liberation Air Force activities have increased dramatically since Taiwan’s new president was inaugurated in May. Schneider noted that the Chinese Air Force has maintained the increased activity level since Lai Ching-te was sworn in on May 20. Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that he intends to unify Taiwan with mainland China and has steadily ramped up military pressure on democratically governed Taiwan. Trump has not committed to defending Taiwan during a Chinese military invasion.

By December 2, 2024, the Government shall file a status report indicating its proposed course for this case going forward," the judge wrote. Trump was indicted in the case in August 2023, but significant delays have kept it from going to trial. He's tentatively scheduled to be sentenced in the New York case on Nov. 26 after he was convicted earlier this year on 34 counts of falsifying business records, a low-level felony. The Georgia election interference case has been on hold as Trump and some of his co-defendants are asking an appeals court to remove the prosecutor in the case because of conflict of interest allegations. Trump has denied any wrongdoing in the Georgia case as well.

Russia's brain drain has become its economy's biggest problem, an economist told Business Insider. The long-lasting nature of brain drain makes the issue more serious than, say, inflation, which could be remedied by central bank maneuvering. Over the next decade, Russia's economy could devolve into one dependent mainly on its natural resources rather than on the most innovative industries, Portes speculated. That's similar to what other economic forecasters have predicted, with some warning Russia's economy could become de-industrialized as its resources are siphoned off by the war. Advertisement"It will be reduced to a resource economy, a natural resource economy," he said of Russia's future.
