Gabbard and another contentious Trump pick — Pete Hegseth, who has been tapped to lead the Defense Department — came under sharpened scrutiny Sunday as the spotlight shifted from Matt Gaetz, Trump’s toppled choice to be attorney general. Trump’s pick of Hegseth is also facing uncertainty after the release last week of a 2017 police report detailing an alleged sexual assault in California. But the withdrawal of Gaetz — who was already widely disliked in Congress — may leave senators feeling they owe the president-elect on his other highly controversial choices. Trump’s new selection for attorney general, Pam Bondi, is meanwhile being welcomed by many Republicans, suggesting she’ll have an easier path to confirmation than Gaetz. But that would still leave the question of who is acceptable to Trump while being confirmable in the Senate.

CNN —Even before special counsel Jack Smith formally asked that his criminal cases against Donald Trump be dismissed, it was already guaranteed the president-elect would never see a jury. “I would fire him within two seconds.”In the end, though, Trump didn’t need to sack the special counsel to kill the two cases. Attorney General Merrick Garland is expected to publicly release it, as he has with past special counsel reports. What to do next in the case will be a question for the incoming Trump Justice Department. But a new chapter has already opened for several members of the Trump legal team who have already been rewarded with plum positions in his incoming administration.

BANGKOK — The Lao government is “profoundly saddened” by the deaths of foreign tourists from drinking alcohol contaminated with methanol and pledged to prosecute those responsible. Two Danes, two Australians, a Briton and an American have died after visiting Vang Vieng, an idyllic town that is popular with foreign backpackers, and drinking contaminated alcohol. Lao state-run news agency KPL said on Friday that authorities were gathering evidence and witness accounts following the foreigners’ deaths due to suspected “consumption of tainted alcoholic beverages”. Counterfeits of well-known alcohol brands and home-made spirits are a problem in Laos. [END TAPE]KRISTEN WELKER:According to the Washington Post, President-elect Trump plans to fire the team that worked with the special counsel. So, I think President Trump is picking reformers for these Cabinet positions. After the midterms Joe Biden said that there was no way President Trump would ever be back in the White House. He's going to sign some executive actions, but he's also going to then begin to roll out this plan. I also think he's going to face some skepticism by Republicans on using the military, for instance, going kind of into different states.

You may not know it by looking at sticker prices in grocery aisles, but Thanksgiving dinner is more affordable than it has been in years. “If your dollar had the same overall purchasing power as a consumer in 1984 … this would be the least expensive Thanksgiving meal in the 39-year history of the AFBF Thanksgiving survey, other than the outlier of 2020,” the authors wrote. Target is offering a $20 Thanksgiving meal for four, including a small turkey, canned vegetables and stovetop stuffing mix. Walmart is promoting an “inflation-free Thanksgiving” meal of 29 items that can serve eight people for $56. “Don’t be afraid to check out multiple retailers.”Some Thanksgiving meal packages offer more ingredients, but that could mean preparing more dishes from scratch.

Many families have been effectively cutting a second rent check to send their kids to day care, according to new data from the Department of Labor. On average, families spent anywhere from $6,552 to as much as $15,600 on full-day care per child in 2022, the latest year with available data. While incomes also range widely throughout the country, households typically funnel between about 9% and 16% of their annual income on day care per child. But while child care costs help explain Americans’ economic dissatisfaction, an NBC News analysis of the Labor Department and election result data also hints at the limits of the issue politically. The most forbidding child care markets in 2022 voted two years later for Trump by higher margins than the nation overall, but so did many of the areas where child care was more affordable.

A handful of Democrats are sounding their approval of Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as Secretary of State but others continue to doubt some cabinet picks made by President-elect Donald Trump. Democratic Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth said she has "a friendship" with Rubio and said she's looking forward to talking to him about his policies. Another name that has drawn substantial criticism from the Senate is former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Trump's candidate for Director of National Intelligence. Sen. Duckworth alleged that Gabbard is "compromised," and she worries that the former congresswoman couldn't pass a background check. It's a slur, quite frankly," Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."
