CNN —A group of North Korean soldiers have been spotted in Russia’s Kursk region, an area of ongoing military operations, Ukraine’s military intelligence service announced Thursday. On Wednesday, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters at least 3,000 North Korean soldiers arrived in eastern Russia this month. “We have never doubted that the North Korean leadership takes our agreements seriously,” Putin told the press conference in Kazan, Russia. Putin’s Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov has been tasked with overseeing the troop’s training, the Ukrainian intelligence service said. CNN had previously reported when North Korean recruits were filmed receiving equipment and uniforms at a training ground in Russia’s Far East.

CNN —Violence is intensifying in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, this week, which saw a United Nations helicopter hit by gunfire and two gangs apparently target US embassy vehicles. Thursday’s helicopter shooting will “likely” cause US airlines to halt their operations once again in Port-au-Prince, the second source told CNN. Last March, major US carriers like Spirit, JetBlue, and American Airlines suspended their operations at Port-au-Prince’s international airport for nearly three months after a sudden spike in gang violence. Gang violence in Haiti has spiraled in recent years, with attacks becoming more brazen and violent. Members of the “Gran Grif” gang used automatic rifles to kill at least 70 people in an attack that displaced 6,000 people, said a UN agency at the time.

CNN —The Justice Department has reached a settlement for more than $100 million with the two corporations that owned and operated the container ship that destroyed Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March. The payment stemming from Thursday’s settlement will go to the US Treasury and to the budgets of several federal agencies directly affected by the crash or involved in the response, the Justice Department said Thursday. It will not cover any damages for the reconstruction of the bridge, the department said. In its filing last month, the Justice Department said that the “tragedy was entirely avoidable,” pointing to alleged failures in the ship’s infrastructure. Prosecutors wrote that, instead of fixing longstanding problems with their electrical transformer, the companies “jury-rigged their ship” with makeshift braces that repeatedly broke.

The super PAC has announced its winners each day to fanfare, with flashy videos posted to social media and celebratory tweets from Musk. It’s unclear if the Justice Department letter is why the super PAC didn’t publicly name a winner on Wednesday. CNN has reached out to the super PAC seeking comment. CNN —Police in Poland have launched an investigation after a collection of more than 100 Bronze Age artifacts surfaced unexpectedly in the northwest of the country. The discovery came to light when photos of the artifacts, including weapons, bronze spearheads, necklaces and shield bosses, were shared with the Provincial Heritage Protection Office in the city of Szczecin, according to a statement from the West Pomeranian Police, published Friday. The historical association then handed the artifacts over to the Provincial Heritage Protection Office in Szczecin, which reported a crime of finding treasure without permission. Police said those responsible for illegally excavating the artifacts could face up to eight years in prison. The artifacts have been transferred to the Provincial Heritage Conservator’s office in Szczecin, which will decide where the items will ultimately be housed.

CNN —The Justice Department warned Elon Musk’s America PAC in recent days that his $1 million sweepstakes to registered voters in swing states may violate federal law, people briefed on the matter told CNN. Musk’s initial promise to pay prizes to registered voters immediately raised concerns from election law experts and some state officials who questioned whether it ran afoul of the law. The language of the petition currently promises $1 million prizes to people chosen at random for signing a petition in support of First and Second Amendment freedoms. But to sign the petition, you must be registered to vote in specific states. CNN —At least 87 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike that hit several multi-story buildings overnight Saturday on Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, the enclave’s health ministry said. CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris turns 60 on Sunday – and, her campaign wants voters to know, that makes her 18 years younger than Donald Trump. Harris’ campaign is increasingly questioning the former president’s mental and physical fitness in the final weeks of the 2024 presidential race. “He’s becoming increasingly unstable and unhinged, and it requires that response,” Harris told reporters Saturday in Detroit. Top Harris allies have also leaned into the strategy of casting Trump as old and mentally unfit in recent days. “He’s talking about Hannibal Lecter, he’s talking about this, he’s talking about that.”Trump, at times, seems to tie migrants who seek asylum in the United States to the character of Lecter being detained at an insane asylum.

CNN —The US is investigating a leak of highly classified US intelligence about Israel’s plans for retaliation against Iran, according to three people familiar with the matter. One of the documents, which says it was compiled by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, says the plans involve Israel moving munitions around. Any such leak would automatically trigger an investigation by the FBI alongside the Pentagon and US intelligence agencies. The US is already on high alert about Iranian hacking campaigns — US intelligence agencies said in August that Iran had hacked documents belonging to Donald Trump’s campaign. Axios first reported on the leaked documents Saturday.
