A Southwest Airlines plane takes off from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in Atlanta, Georgia, US, on Friday, July 12, 2024. Elliott Investment Management and Southwest Airlines have been discussing a settlement that would give the activist investor significant representation on the airline's board, according to people familiar with the matter. The settlement talks are predicated on a deal that would give Elliott less than full board control, said the people, who asked not to be named because the negotiations are confidential. Southwest's board will drop to 12 members after Chairman Gary Kelly steps down next year, meaning Elliott would likely end up wither fewer than six selections. The talks are in early stages, and it's possible that no deal could be reached, some sources said.

“Losing the workers would devastate our companies, our industry and our economy.”‘The math is just not there’There is evidence that foreign-born construction workers help keep the housing market in check. “Immigrant construction workers in Sun Belt metros like Raleigh, Nashville, Houston, and San Antonio have helped these cities sustain their housing cost advantage over coastal cities despite rapid growth in housing demand,” the authors wrote. Undocumented workers would likely flee ahead of any national deportation effort, Hetrick said, even though many have been in the U.S. for well over a decade. Past as prologueLast year, the state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, enacted a series of restrictions and penalties to deter the employment of undocumented workers. Many immigrant workers hastily left the state even before the policies took effect, with social media videos showing some construction sites sitting empty.

I spoke to voters and a mayor in Northampton, one of two bellwether counties in Pennsylvania. The mayor told me that politics are local — and the election will likely come down to grocery bills. “I do not know if that’s true or not,” Biden national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters aboard Air Force One Thursday when asked about the calls. “Obviously,” Sullivan added, “That would raise red flags if it were true.”Asked by CNN whether the administration was trying to ascertain more details about those calls, the White House declined to provide specific information. Trump has denied having multiple calls with Putin, calling it “absolutely wrong” in an interview on Newsmax last week. Days later at the Chicago Economic Club, he declined to comment on whether the Putin calls had taken place, but said it would have been a “smart thing” if he had.
