For today's newsletter, I caught up with some finance pros over the weekend to get a sense of what we can learn from last week's earnings disappointments. Tech earnings were a huge disappointment and analysts don't see much relief on the horizon. "The common thread between the mega cap tech earnings reports this week is the companies' unwillingness to cut costs aggressively ahead of an economic slowdown, in spite of investor expectations," he said. What was your biggest takeaway from last week's Big Tech earnings? On the company's earnings call, its CFO said the surging dollar has cost Amazon more than $900 million more than expected.
In her opening statement, Spacey attorney Jennifer Keller squarely targeted the #MeToo movement: “One of the cardinal rules of the so-called MeToo movement [is] that you have to believe the victim. It was cleverly set up by Mr. Rapp.”And while testifying in trial, Spacey denied any wrongdoing and blamed his Twitter response for being the product of misguided “crisis” management against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement. He reiterated his embrace of the #MeToo movement after losing the trial. There was no reason to allow the trial to demonize a movement that encourages reporting sex crimes and discourages sexual abuse. How the trial was conducted matters to people other than Rapp and Spacey.
Barbell strategy The other way to think about diversification — and one we used heavily during this year's choppy market — is the barbell portfolio strategy. And if inflation persists but also economic activity picks up, you better own energy stocks. That also brings more demand into the oil market, so expect oil prices and the energy stocks tied to it to benefit. But using correlations and the barbell method to create a diverse mix of holdings can help you stay invested in market. The jury in Kevin Spacey's sexual abuse trial found that the Oscar-winning actor is not liable for battery against “Star Trek: Discovery star” Anthony Rapp. Rapp alleged that Spacey climbed on top of him at a party in New York City in 1986, when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26. “I didn’t ask for him to do that,” he told jurors, referring to Spacey’s alleged sexual advance. Rapp alleged that sometime after that evening, Spacey invited him to a party at his apartment. Rapp testified that he did not recognize anyone at the party, so he went into a bedroom to watch television.

Peter McGuinness, Impossible Foods' new CEO, has said he wants a Super Bowl ad. "He's said 'Super Bowl ad' at least a thousand times," a current marketing employee said. But Super Bowl spots cost several million dollars each, putting them out of reach for Impossible, the employee said. Insider spoke with five current and former Impossible Foods employees about McGuinness' and Brown's leadership and the future of the company. "Star Trek: Discovery" actor Anthony Rapp testified Wednesday that the moment Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey allegedly climbed on top of him at a New York City party in 1986 was "the most traumatic single event of my life" and caused "lingering impacts." Rapp was 14 at the time of the alleged encounter and Spacey was 26. Rapp testified that at some point, an apparently drunk Spacey entered the room, lifted him up, placed him on a bed and rested his body on top of him. "I never wanted Kevin Spacey's career," Rapp told jurors. Rapp testified that he has shared his Spacey allegation with friends over the years, but he does not know "the number" of people he has told.
Inflation Health of the consumer The strong dollar Commodity volatility Inflation Inflation remains top of mind for investors, as rising prices continue to weigh on demand for many goods and services. On the other hand, Bank of America analysts highlighted P & G's scale, innovation, and portfolio strength as "key advantages." In an encouraging research note from UBS last week, analysts said iPhone demand is holding up. By reviewing iPhone delivery wait time data, UBS analysts gauged consumer demand for the latest iPhone series. Meta has already forecasted third quarter total revenue in the range of $26 billion to $28.5 billion, reflecting weak advertising demand.
Following Monday's trade, the portfolio will own 390 shares of STZ, increasing its weighting to 3.24% from 3.08%. We could not buy the stock last week as we were restricted from trading it because Jim mentioned it on television. We're buying 25 shares of Danaher (DHR) at roughly $272.79 each. We're also buying 100 shares of TJX Companies (TJX) at roughly $63.04 each. Following Tuesday's trade, the Trust will down 950 shares of TJX, increasing its weighting in the portfolio to 2.13% from 1.91%. We're adding to our position in Danaher and buying back 25 shares we previously sold at higher levels. Danaher shares have fallen about 3.5%, or $10, since the company made these two announcements last Wednesday after the closing bell, compared to a roughly 2.9% decline in the S & P 500 .
Today, though, I'm homing in on another front in the global markets story — specifically, Russia. Official customs data showed China spent a record-breaking $8.3 billion importing Russian oil products, gas, and coal in August. "What happens is that [isolationism] reduces the number of products that [Russia] can buy," Jay Zagorsky, a markets professor at Boston University, told Insider. They told Insider the exact books that got them started on the path to building wealth — see their list of four reads here. That's according to Bank of America analysts, who wrote Monday that global markets will remain strained heading into next year thanks to a variety of factors.
Stock investing in the current environment has been kind of like that 1990s "Seinfeld" episode of a similar name, where seemingly familiar dynamics are off kilter. But if you're feeling like it's been exceptionally weird lately — and perhaps just plain upside-down — you're not alone. In reality, we've seen high oil, we've seen high inflation, we've seen wars in Europe and tension with China. I wrote Thursday night about how this latest sell signal on Wall Street will hurt some stocks more than others. Downgrades and price cuts everywhere on Wall Street. CNBC's tech team says Silicon Valley loves the move, but clearly Wall Street does not. FedEx hasn't exactly been a perfect company in recent years, and Subramaniam acknowledged to Jim that FedEx needs to get its own house in order. However, the traditional recession playbook involves selling energy stocks due to fears of demand collapsing. Mixed bag The stocks discussed here have a mixture of economically resilient and sensitive characteristics to them, such as Microsoft (MSFT) and Apple (AAPL). We're selling 30 shares of Humana (HUM) at roughly $468 each. Following Wednesday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 120 shares of HUM, decreasing its weighting to 1.98% from 2.46%. Wednesday's small sale in Humana comes one day before the company's investor event. It's not like us to trade around an investor event or immediately following a maelstrom in the market like Tuesday. We'll realize a small gain of about 1% on HUM stock purchased in April 2022.
Elon Musk has had a wild life, but he's not the only member of his family to launch businesses, make millions, or achieve fame. ANGELA WEISS/AFP via Getty ImagesHis family is chock-full of entrepreneurs and rebels, from his filmmaker sister, Tosca, to his actress ex-wife, Talulah Riley. And in November, he quietly had twins with one of his top executives, Shivon Zilis, according to documents obtained by Insider. The twins were born weeks before his second child with Grimes was born. Here's a closer look at the Musk family tree.
