WASHINGTON — The U.S. military on Monday released video of what it said was an unsafe maneuver by a Russian fighter jet near Alaska during an intercept by the U.S. military last week. The United States regularly carries out aerial intercepts of Russian aircraft in international airspace near Alaska, and usually says they are carried out in a safe and professional manner. But this time was different, officials say. North American Aerospace Defense Command, known as NORAD, said on Sept. 23 that it detected and tracked four Russian military aircraft operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone. At the time, it said the Russian activity “occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat.”An air defense identification zone is international airspace just beyond a country’s sovereign territory that approaching aircraft to identify themselves.

While it was an asset to Biden in polling against Trump, it appears to be a much bigger advantage for Harris. And in this new NBC poll, Harris’ advantage was just under 20 points. Researchers at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi have developed a high-tech solution to searching huge, arid areas for potential archaeological sites. Traditionally, archaeologists use ground surveys to detect potential sites of interest, but that can be time-consuming and difficult in harsh terrains like the desert. “Once it was trained, it gave us an indication of other potential areas (nearby) that are still not excavated,” says Francis. Khalifa University isn’t alone in using artificial intelligence to detect potential sites. If archaeologists find the structures the algorithm has predicted, Dubai Culture plans to use the technology to unearth more sites.

New York CNN —Boeing still has to make “significant changes” to improve the quality and safety of its airplanes, according to the head of the Federal Aviation Administration. “There must be a shift in the company’s safety culture to holistically address its systemic quality assurance and production issues,” he will say, according to his remarks. The incident sparked numerous federal investigations into Boeing, and numerous congressional hearings that raised questions about its quality and safety of its planes. Whitaker is set to say that Boeing must make “significant changes” to address “systemic production quality issues.” And his remarks also promise that the FAA will be more active in oversight of both Boeing and its primary supplier, Spirit AeroSystems, which Boeing is in the process of purchasing. “We have added more safety inspectors in the Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems facilities, and we will maintain our increased on-site presence for the foreseeable future,” he will say, according to his remarks.

Still, it took nearly a year to catch the last known rat on St. Paul, which was believed to have hopped off a barge. The success of what was long called Rat Island, a tract in the Aleutians roughly half the size of Manhattan, shows how effective eradication programs can be.

CNN —The North American Aerospace Defense Command says it detected four Russian military aircraft flying near Alaska on Monday, less than two weeks after US Army soldiers were deployed to the area as part of a “force protection operation” amid an increase in Russian and Chinese military exercises in the region. The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace in Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace, NORAD said in a statement. “This Russian activity in the Alaska ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat,” the statement said. NORAD intercepted Russian military aircraft flying near Alaska several times this month. Though the Biden administration has worked to resume high-level communications with China, including between military leaders, Beijing remains the US’ major military competitor.

The three people who lost their lives in Alaska are just a few of those who have died on trips to see the world’s fast-disappearing glaciers. But there’s also another motivation increasingly present — the desire to see the glaciers before they disappear. In Alaska, Sheldon used to be able to find a good area for ice climbing for the whole summer. Many are convinced danger is manageable, he told CNN, but “if you’re honest about it, that might often be a rather naive understanding.”As well the safety issues glaciers pose tourists, tourists are also a huge risk to the glaciers themselves. As the glaciers shift, so too will glacier tourism, something that’s starkly clear to Sheldon.

CNN —Suspicious packages were sent this week to election offices in more than 20 states, leading to an FBI investigation, triggering evacuations and rattling staff, according to a CNN survey of state offices and Associated Press reporting. Karen Brinson Bell, the executive director of the North Carolina State Board of Elections, told CNN that that the battleground state was also targeted this week. Officials in Kansas and New York said in statements and interviews that, after the letters were noticed, they evacuated their offices. Postal Inspection Service are investigating a series of suspicious mailings sent to election officials in several states,” the FBI said in a statement. A source involved with a group that coordinates with election officials across the country told CNN the 2023 incident led many of these offices to step up precautions and safety measures, so they were better protected this time around.
