VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis faced calls to overturn the Catholic Church’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender people on Saturday when he held talks with LGBTQ activists at the Vatican. “I really wanted to share with Pope Francis about the joy that I have being a transgender Catholic person,” Michael Sennett, who took part in the meeting, told Reuters. The meeting “means that the church is coming along, the church is joining the modern era,” she said. Gramick’s work with LGBTQ Catholics has attracted the ire of Vatican and U.S. Catholic officials for decades, including Pope Benedict XVI. But she has developed a correspondence with Francis, who first welcomed her for a meeting at the Vatican last year.

"I Do (I Think)," explores essential conversations of marriage for a Gen Z and millennial audience. When I grew up and started hearing about married couples who had separate finances and alternated who paid for dinner, I found it weird at best and unsettling at worst. My view on married couples with separate finances changedNow that I'm older, I see it all differently. Different states also have different levels of protection for married couples who divorce, which can impact what extra steps you feel you do or don't need to take. I'm not financially savvy and I'm also hyperaware that money conversations can be deeply emotional in ways we aren't always equipped to handle.

That law, the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), requires that states allow eligible Americans who live overseas to vote in federal elections. Heckel pointed out that the suit was filed two weeks after counties Pennsylvania began mailing ballots to military and overseas voters "and baselessly challenges Pennsylvania law, which provides clear procedures for processing applications by overseas voters." The lawsuits come as former President Donald Trump and his allies have begun to sow doubts about overseas voting. Last month, Trump claimed on Truth Social that Democrats would use overseas voting laws to "cheat," a baseless theory Elon Musk also shared on X last week. “Traditionally, we think of overseas voters as military voters who might skew Republican.

Social Security recipients can expect a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase in their payments starting in 2025 amid cooling inflation. On Thursday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the 12-month consumer price index inflation rate hit 2.4% in September. The Social Security Administration calculates the annual COLA based on consumer price growth in the months of July, August and September. That, advocates say, is proof that seniors and other Social Security recipients are facing a declining standard of living. “Congress knows this problem is going on, but the gridlock can’t seem to solve anything, much less the third rail of politics that is Social Security,” said Shannon G. Benton, executive director of the Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group.

Americans for Prosperity Action, a super PAC affiliated with the Koch network of political advocacy groups, is launching a slate of new ads backing Republicans across multiple Senate battleground races, spending $8.75 million on a campaign focused largely on issues like the economy, inflation, and immigration. With party control of both chambers of Congress up for grabs in November, the group has spent about $60 million on election advertising already in 2024, according to FEC filings. Americans for Prosperity Action backed Nikki Haley for president in 2023 but has focused its efforts since then on promoting conservative down-ballot candidates through digital advertising, door-knocking, phone-banking and election mailers. The group is not investing in efforts to promote Donald Trump this fall. It has contacted more than 9 million voters about congressional races nationwide this election cycle.

CNN —The Supreme Court on Tuesday signaled a willingness to uphold a Biden administration regulation on “ghost guns,” mail-order kits that allow people to build untraceable weapons at home and that are turning up at crime scenes with greater frequency. The difference here, she said, is that the ghost guns are marketed to be built into guns and serve no other conceivable purpose. President Joe Biden’s administration told the court in briefing that police departments have faced an “explosion of crimes involving ghost guns” in recent years. In 2017, police submitted about 1,600 ghost guns recovered at crime scenes for tracing. After that decision, a lower court stepped in to block the regulations as applied to two manufacturers.

A poll released by the Annenberg Public Policy Center on Wednesday found 56% of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court. Take, for instance, Trump’s ban on travel from predominately Muslim nations, which made repeat trips to the Supreme Court. Assuming the Senate continues confirming pending nominees when it returns in November, the next president is poised to inherit the smallest number of judicial vacancies since when George H.W. During his four years in office, Trump appointed 234 federal judges, the second-highest amount by a one-term president. “If Trump is elected, the judiciary becomes the Trump judiciary,” said Maggie Jo Buchanan, managing director of Demand Justice. With a new academic year well underway, more than 60 colleges and universities are still under federal investigation over antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents during the campus protests that swept the United States after the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel, according to the Department of Education. The Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights has opened inquiries into dozens of schools over the past year, checking for violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on ethnicity or race. Documents released by the department show that around 80 percent of the Oct. 7-related investigations it undertook stemmed from complaints about antisemitism, and that many of those complaints came to the department through conservative and pro-Jewish legal advocacy groups, including several founded by high-ranking former Education Department officials. Under federal scrutiny, which carries the risk of losing federal funding, dozens of schools still facing government inquiries have moved quickly to pre-empt large campus disruptions and enforce stricter limits on certain types of speech and demonstrations.
