Southwest expects fourth-quarter operating revenue per available seat mile, a proxy for pricing power, to decrease by 9% to 11% compared with last year. Southwest Airlines also forecast capacity to increase by 15% in the current quarter, once adjusted for the operational disruption faced by Southwest in December last year. Southwest Airlines reported a profit of $193 million, or $0.31 per share, in the third quarter, from $277 million, or $0.44 per share, a year earlier.

Meanwhile, Boeing and Spirit, a supplier for the U.S. planemaker and European rival Airbus(AIR.PA), are contending with a lapse involving misdrilled holes on Boeing’s 737 MAX. Boeing is expected to report a loss of $2.23 per diluted share, compared with a loss of $5.49 a year ago. Spirit is projected to report a loss of $1.03 a share, compared to a loss of $1.22 a year earlier, according to LSEG data. The target may no longer be achievable if Boeing can no longer meet its goal of delivering 400 737s this year. Spirit, which reports Nov. 1, has already revealed preliminary results as part of a new price agreement with Boeing.

Spirit said it continues working closely with Boeing to address rework related to the aft pressure bulkhead. The U.S. planemaker said Chinese airlines would need 8,560 new commercial planes through 2042, up from 8,485 in its previous forecast last year. "As China's economy and traffic continue to grow, Boeing’s complete line-up of commercial jets will play a key role in helping meet that growth sustainably and economically." Boeing has about 85 MAX jets in inventory for Chinese customers and 55 MAXs originally slated for Chinese airlines have been remarketed, the company said in July.

REUTERS/Johanna Geron/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsVIENNA/SAO PAULO, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Austria plans to replace its retiring C-130 Hercules fleet with Embraer's (EMBR3.SA) C-390 Millenium military transport aircraft, the country's Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner said on Wednesday. Austria is aiming to buy about four aircrafts and is negotiating with the Netherlands on a potential joint order, Tanner told a news conference. Aside from an order for 19 C-390 aircrafts from the Brazilian Air Force, Portugal has ordered five and Hungary has requested two. Analysts at JPMorgan calculated that including the prospective orders from Austria and The Netherlands, the aircraft's potential lifetime sales stand at 35 units, 28 of which are still to be delivered. Shares in Embraer rose 2.85% in early trading on the Brazilian stock exchange, outperforming the Bovespa stock index (.BVSP), which rose 0.8%.
