GM indefinitely delays Cruise Origin autonomous vehicle
  + stars: | 2024-07-23 | by ( Michael Wayland | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
DETROIT – General Motors is indefinitely delaying production of its Origin autonomous vehicle as its embattled Cruise self-driving unit attempts to relaunch operations. The Detroit automaker said Tuesday its majority-owned robotaxi unit will instead focus on using the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt for development of autonomous vehicles. Cruise has been using now-discontinued Bolts for autonomous vehicle development for several years. It was not immediately clear how many Origin vehicles the facility has produced, however it was previously reported that ex-Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt, a cofounder, told staff that hundreds of Origin vehicles had been produced. Cruise in February 2022 petitioned U.S. regulators seeking permission to deploy up to 2,500 self-driving Origin vehicles annually without the human controls.

Here’s what to know if you’re planning to travel this weekend. David J. Phillip/APUS-based carriers American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Allegiant Airlines, SunCountry and Frontier Airlines all reported issues on Friday. Crews have limits on their working hours, so staffing challenges cascade along with flight delays. That all depends on the type of ticket you have, the airline you’re flying with and whether you have travel insurance (which is always a good idea). If you’re set to travel soon, wherever you are in the world, it’s worth double checking your individual journey status before you travel.

Some countries, like Taiwan, will gain as many as 50% more millionaires during that time. But the United Kingdom and the Netherlands make "notable exceptions" on this list, per UBS, because both are forecasted to lose millionaires. The UK's three million millionaires put it third among countries with the highest number of millionaires last year, as measured in US dollars, per UBS. The loss continues a trend: The UK lost 16,500 millionaires between 2017 and 2023, per immigration consultancy Henley & Partners.

CNN —The 2024 Wimbledon women’s singles final is set: Jasmine Paolini will battle Barbora Krejčíková for the right to lift the iconic Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time in either of their careers. Paolini has already made history by becoming the first Italian woman to make the Wimbledon final and is seeking her maiden grand slam title after falling short in the French Open final last month. LONDON — The number of global millionaires is set to keep rising over the next five years — with the U.K. a stark outlier, according to the 2024 Global Wealth Report from UBS. Gains will be led by tech powerhouse Taiwan, where the number of millionaires is set to jump 47% on the back of the booming microchip industry and a rise in immigration by wealthy foreigners. The two hubs in which the most global millionaires are based, the U.S. and mainland China, are set to see their figures rise 16% and 8% respectively. Another country where the number of dollar millionaires is forecast to decline was the Netherlands, which is estimated to see a 4% drop in such wealthy individuals. The report meanwhile sees the number of U.S. dollar millionaires in Russia growing by 21%.
