Market moves: The stock market tacked on some additional gains after the Federal Reserve on Thursday afternoon cut interest rates by 25 basis points. Bond yields, which move inversely to bond prices, have been on the rise since the Fed cut rates in September. Stick to discipline: The stock market especially liked the idea of a pro-business environment and de-regulation expected in the future Trump administration. Wondering what stocks might do well the rest of this year as America awaits Donald Trump take office for a second time in January? Others were high-beta growth stocks that can ride a broad market rally and benefit from corporate tax rates. Most analysts surveyed by LSEG hold buy ratings, but they expect KeyCorp shares to slide by more than 5% after their rally this year. Between Nov. 7 and the end of that year, KeyCorp shares ran up more than 25%. CarMax is a cyclical stock that should benefit from both deregulation and the rising tide for high-beta stocks.

AdvertisementDonald Trump's presidential victory and his promise of light regulation could help relieve one of Citi's biggest problems. Wells Fargo analyst Mike Mayo called Trump's win a "regulatory game changer" in a research note. For instance, the OCC has required Citi to submit plans each quarter to ensure they are allocating enough resources to the Transformation effort. AdvertisementSince the July fines, Citi has faced mounting pressure. A few weeks later, Fraser was dogged by questions in an earnings call about the bank's regulatory fate.

Trump defeated Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, and Republicans claimed a majority of the Senate in elections this week. "We know kind of where the world is headed in a Trump environment because we've seen it before," said Jeffrey Solomon, president of TD Cowen, on CNBC's "Money Movers" Wednesday. One M&A advisor, who also spoke to CNBC anonymously, noted that Trump's disdain for Big Tech companies — historically active deal-makers — might keep them on the sidelines. Apparent GOP opposition to the CHIPS Act means that semiconductor consolidation might be challenging, the advisor noted, while cautioning it is still too early to know what a Trump presidency would mean. That advisor noted that smaller banks had been getting gobbled up for "some time," but that the pace and size of those acquisitions would likely ramp up under a Trump presidency.

New York CNN —Wednesday morning, my inbox was flooded with notes from analysts eager to talk about the election’s upside for various sectors. The crypto folks came on especially strong, cheering the success of the candidate who promised them the moon. When the stock market opened in New York, the enthusiasm for these so-called Trump trades went into hyperdrive. Virtually all mainstream economists oppose tariffs on that scale and expect they would cause inflation to rise yet again. “My worst-case scenario is that he’s actually successful with his blanket tariff policies,” Alpert told me.

To lower housing costs, Trump has said he would allow homes to be built on federally protected land, something that could help increase the supply of homes in places like Nevada and Arizona. TaxesTrump has proposed a number of tax cuts, including a complete elimination of the federal income tax. Those cuts lowered the corporate tax rate to 21% from 35%, reduced individual income tax rates, and increased the standard deduction. That could create havoc for workers and consumers and reduce the amount of income taxes the federal government brings in. About 40% of Social Security recipients pay federal income taxes, typically because they have other sources of income that raise them above a certain threshold where they are required to pay income tax, according to the Social Security Administration.

Major stock indexes soared Wednesday morning in the wake of Donald Trump's decisive victory in Tuesday's presidential election. The last time the Dow, which represents larger, more established firms, saw a 1,000-point jump in a single day was November 2022. NBC News is projecting that Trump will finish with 276 Electoral College votes in his defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent. Trump has promised to extend or enact sweeping tax cuts and deregulatory policies that are widely supported across the business community. That represents market pushback on one of Trump's key policy planks: A weaker dollar that would support U.S. exports.

When officials meet to decide where interest rates should be, they don’t consult the president and other elected officials — and for good reason. That’s because, as one former Federal Reserve chair famously said, central bankers’ job is to remove the punchbowl right when the party is just getting started. I feel that strongly,” Trump said at a press conference in August, referring to the Fed’s interest rate decisions. Lowering interest rates too soon could’ve risked reigniting inflation, which is currently just a tenth of a percentage point higher than the Fed’s 2% target. That’s why countries with independent central banks generally have lower inflation, Fed Chair Jerome Powell told reporters in September after central bankers lowered rates by a half point.

Two stocks have outperformed the S & P 500 every November when elections have been held over the past three decades — regardless of the outcome, according to a CNBC Pro study. Electrical and industrials giant Eaton Corporation and Sweden's second-largest lender, Svenska Handelsbanken , are the two stocks that beat the U.S. benchmark in November every election year. CNBC Pro screened for stocks currently in the MSCI World Index that gained more than the S & P 500 — or lost less than the index — in November of every election year since 1988. Every time is different Historical performance is never a guarantee of future performance, and stocks often move for idiosyncratic reasons. This year, for instance, the Federal Reserve is expected to announce a decision on interest rates on Thursday, which could also influence the trajectory of stocks.

Mortgage rates also took a hit from the uncertainty, with a number of smaller and mainstream lenders raising mortgage rates on the expectation that interest rates may stay higher for longer. watch nowVirgin Money became the first major lender to raise mortgage rates after the budget, lifting them by 0.15%. It's the dawn of a new day for the crypto industry with Donald Trump now the president-elect of the United States, said Galaxy Digital's Michael Novogratz, calling out the numerous crypto advocates that have advised him. "We've got a Congress that is moving our way, we've got a president that's moving our way, and so for Galaxy and the crypto industry, that couldn't be more optimistic," he said on CNBC's "Squawk Box" Wednesday morning. "Those three positions, with someone who's open minded to crypto … changes everything," he said. And all of a sudden we'll start seeing decentralized systems launched and work so this is really a step change." The shift won't happen overnight, Novogratz warned, but as Trump starts to appoint people into various positions of leadership there will be "a substantial shift in the energy of this industry."

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday told investors the Trump administration is more likely to allow mergers and acquisitions to go through, processes largely stymied under Biden. "I am very confident in the idea that, under President Trump, M&A's about to come back and come back bigly," he said. Beyond M&A, Cramer said the President-elect is likely to relax antitrust regulations, whereas Biden appointees have scrutinized Big Tech outfits like Apple . But while Cramer suggested these companies are likely safer from regulatory interference under Trump, he said some of that depends on Trump's own attitude towards them. "So, it's not a surprise to see most of America's big name tech CEOs come out today with enthusiastic, public messages of congratulations for President-elect Trump," he said.

Shortly after the opening bell, we will be selling 150 shares of Morgan Stanley at roughly $128.81 and 240 shares of Wells Fargo at roughly $71.02. There's strength across the board in premarket trading, with Wells Fargo ripping 10% higher, Morgan Stanley up more than 8%, and fellow Club holding BlackRock jumping more than 4%. Wells Fargo is one of the biggest winners in the group because there are greater odds its Federal Reserve-imposed asset cap will be removed. That's very positive for the future earnings of investment banks like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs . Former President Donald Trump arrives for his campaign rally at the Trump National Doral Golf Club in Doral, Florida, on July 9, 2024. Getting that money required him to make big promises pertaining to the crypto industry. "For too long our government has violated the cardinal rule that every bitcoiner knows by heart: Never sell your bitcoin," Trump said during his keynote speech. Trump pledged to maintain the current level of bitcoin holdings that the U.S. has amassed from seizing assets from financial criminals. "On day one, I will fire Gary Gensler," Trump said, referencing the Joe Biden-appointed SEC chairman who has taken an aggressive approach to crypto regulation.

The Federal Reserve likely will stick to the business at hand when it wraps up its meeting Thursday with another interest rate cut, but will have its eye on the future against a backdrop that suddenly has gotten a lot more complicated. The focus, though, will turn to what's ahead for Chair Jerome Powell and his Fed colleagues as they navigate a shifting economy — and the political earthquake of Donald Trump's stunning victory in the presidential race. So while the immediate action will be to stay the course and enact the cut, which equals 25 basis points, the market's attention likely will turn to what the committee and Powell have to say about the future. The fed funds rate, which sets what banks charge each other for overnight lending but often influences consumer debt as well, is currently targeted in a range between 4.75%-5.0%. Market pricing currently favors another quarter-point cut in December, followed by a January pause then multiple reductions through 2025.
