REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 17 (Reuters) - A nonprofit that monitors online hate speech urged a U.S. federal judge to throw out what it called a "ridiculous" lawsuit by Elon Musk's X Corp to stifle free expression. "Fortunately, state and federal free speech protections cannot be so easily evaded." In September, X sued California to block the state from enforcing a law requiring that social media companies publish policies for policing misinformation, harassment, hate speech and extremism. X said the law, Assembly Bill 587, violates its free speech rights. The case is X Corp v. Center for Countering Digital Hate Inc et al, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No.

The White House on Friday lashed out at Elon Musk for promoting "Antisemitic and racist hate" after the Tesla CEO and X Corp. owner said he agreed with a social media post accusing "Jewish communities" of pushing "hatred against whites." Musk, responding on X, wrote that that post "said the actual truth." Bates appeared to be referring to the mass murder at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018, in which 11 people were shot to death by a gunman who expressed a belief in the antisemitic "white genocide" conspiracy theory. "We condemn this abhorrent promotion of Antisemitic and racist hate in the strongest terms, which runs against our core values as Americans," Bates said. Spokespeople for Tesla and X did not immediately respond to CNBC's requests for comment on the White House's statement.

New York CNN —Nonprofit online watchdog the Center for Countering Digital Hate on Thursday hit back at Elon Musk’s X in a motion to dismiss the social media company’s August lawsuit. CCDH claims that X’s lawsuit is “riddled with legal deficiencies” and attempts to punish the nonprofit for its First Amendment protected speech, according to its Thursday filing in the Northern District Court of California. X and a lawyer representing the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on CCDH’s Thursday filing. In its complaint against CCDH, X alleges it has lost “at least tens of millions of dollars” in advertising revenue. “Instead, X Corp. has ginned up baseless claims purporting to take issue with how the CCDH Defendants gathered data that formed the basis for their research.”

MONTREAL, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Airfare to popular international leisure destinations should cost less this winter and next summer than a year ago as carriers add capacity, the CEO of Canada's WestJet Airlines told Reuters on Wednesday. I think this winter we'll have a better supply-to-demand balance, which will give more affordability to Canadians," von Hoensbroech added. WestJet expects to fly almost half of the seats to sun destinations after acquiring leisure carrier Sunwing this year. "We see strong bookings, slightly softer than what we saw last winter," von Hoensbroech added. "I would expect next summer there would be a different demand-to-supply equation on transatlantic," von Hoensbroech said.

SAG-AFTRA actors and Writers Guild of America (WGA) writers walk the picket line during their ongoing strike outside Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, U.S., August 22, 2023. Striking writers and actors slashed spending, burned through savings and piled up debt to survive. Sets for movies and TV shows are lighting up again as studios rush to resume filming. Still, Hollywood is unlikely to return to the frenzied production pace of the streaming wars, when studios competed for subscribers and cachet. Hollywood actors won similar gains in a tentative agreement reached with the studios on Nov. 8.

When Elon Musk bought Twitter he promised to run the platform with fairness and transparency. But, Wall Street Journal reporting shows that, nearly a year into his ownership Musk is making a lot of choices based on impulses and the requests of friends. WSJ reporter Georgia Wells joins host Zoe Thomas to explain what that means for the platform and its future. X is granting employees stock grants at a price of $45 a share, which translates to a company valuation about 55% below the price of Musk’s $44 billion takeover in October 2022, according to an internal document reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice David B. Cohen rejected Fox Corp. and Fox News’ attempts to subpoena George Soros, his son Alex Soros, and their philanthropic organization Open Society Foundation (OSF) for documents related to the election defamation case. Fox argued that Alex and George Soros, as well as OSF, possess material necessary to the network’s defense in the defamation trial. The documentation, Fox argued, would establish a connection between George Soros and Smartmatic. “I base that on the finding that the crux of Smartmatic’s claims is that Fox has asserted they were part of rigging [the election], not that Smartmatic was affiliated with George Soros, Alex Soros, or the OSF,” Cohen said. “We’re interested in the closeness of the relationship, what Soros has done for Smartmatic over time,” Marks said.

A Tesla Model Y is seen on a Tesla car lot in Austin, Texas, on May 31, 2023. The Wall Street Journal reported in August that federal prosecutors were investigating whether Tesla used company funds to design and build a "glass house project" for Musk. Last year, Reuters reported that a federal criminal investigation was underway concerning Tesla's claims that its cars were self-driving. Reuters has reported, and research by Recurrent and others have revealed, that Tesla's cars frequently fail to achieve the mileage stated in range estimates and shown on the in-vehicle displays. Shares in Tesla were ticking higher Monday midday, starting to recover from a 15% decline last week following the company's pessimistic third-quarter earnings call.

[1/2] 'Yes' campaigners drive past voters lining up at a polling booth during The Voice referendum in Queanbeyan, Australia, October 14, 2023. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese misread the public mood, analysts said on Sunday, as he took responsibility for the referendum result, in which only the national capital voted "Yes" from among eight states and territories. Elected in 1996, Albanese saw the failure of the 1999 referendum for Australia to become a republic. Dutton may not try to win back these Teal seats at the next election, Kenny said, adding that almost all of Labor's rural and outer-suburban, working class seats voted "No". Former Liberal Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who will join the board of Fox Corp next month, praised Dutton's "courageous" campaign against the referendum in an interview with Sky News.
