Brisbane, Australia CNN —An urgent operation is underway to find two Australian miners missing deep underground for more than 24 hours in a zinc mine in northwest Queensland. The miners disappeared early Wednesday when a void opened beneath them as they worked 125 meters (407 feet) below ground at the Dugald River mine near Cloncurry, according to a statement from mining group Perenti. It’s unclear how the drill rig operator managed to escape and how much further the two miners fell into the void. The Dugald River mine produces zinc concentrate, with byproducts including lead and silver, MMG says on its website. Dugald River mine general manager Tim Akroyd said rescue teams were trying to reach the vehicle as soon as possible.

The United States operates a military base and nuclear missile silos in Montana, a state bordering Idaho. Military officials developed a plan to shoot down the balloon on Wednesday as it flew over Montana. BALLOON MANEUVERSThe U.S. government has declined to say which sites the Chinese balloon surveyed. Brisbane, Australia CNN —The world is producing a record amount of single-use plastic waste, mostly made from polymers created from fossil fuels, despite global efforts to reduce plastic pollution and carbon emissions, according to a new report released Monday. The second Plastic Waste Makers Index, compiled by the philanthropic Minderoo Foundation, found the world generated 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste in 2021, which was 6 million metric tons more than in 2019, when the first index was released. In recent years, governments around the world have announced policies to reduce the volume of single-use plastic, banning products like single-use straws, disposable cutlery, food containers, cotton swabs, bags and balloons. Many countries have banned single-use plastic plates and cutlery. In the developing world, it’ll lead to people who would not otherwise have any work, having work making sure there’s no plastic waste going into the ocean, there’s no plastic waste on streets, there’s no plastic waste poisoning wildlife,” he said.

Under the Radiation Safety Act 1975, only specially trained and licensed operators can package radioactive substances, but different rules apply to contractors hired to transport it, Steen said. “Any transport company can transport radioactive material provided they have got the license to do so,” she said. Search teams found the missing capsule not far from the Rio Tinto mine, suggesting it fell off the truck soon after departure. On Thursday it would start its journey south again – this time to a health department facility in Perth. Legitimate tax deductions aren’t loopholes. A loophole would refer to a flaw in the law that allows a workaround to circumvent the intent of the law. Legitimate tax deductions are entirely different. The term “loophole” gives an unjustified negative connotation to legitimate and legal tax deductions.
