All eyes will be on Disney 's streaming numbers when the company reports its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings after the bell Tuesday. While Netflix expects subscriber growth to rebound, uncertainty has left analysts and investors wondering what the future holds for the broader industry. Analysts are anticipating Disney+ subscriber adds of roughly 8 million for the period between July and September, bringing the total number of users to more than 160 million, according to StreetAccount estimates. There's also concern that a looming recession could impact Disney's other business ventures like its parks and studio businesses.
New York CNN Business —One of Paramount’s biggest blockbusters this year is a surprise hit that hasn’t slowed down at the box office since opening at No. The film, which stars Sosie Bacon as a psychiatrist being tormented by visions of horrifying smirks, opened to $22.6 million at the domestic box office late September. Many horror films this year have done the same, showing that — aside from superhero movies — horror is Hollywood’s most dependable genre at the box office. Audiences have been sporadic and the overall North America box office is down about 34% from the pre-Covid levels of 2019. “The box office results have been scary impressive.”
The Elon Musk wrecking ball

Editor’s Note: A version of this story appeared in CNN Business’ Nightcap newsletter. New York CNN Business —Elon Musk bought a $44 billion fixer-upper, and he’s not wasting any time gutting the joint. If you spent the weekend trying to ignore the news, like I did, let’s catch up on what the Musk wrecking ball has targeted so far:And yes, this is all Textbook Musk. Musk himself has long favored using Twitter rather than an PR team to break news about his other companies like Tesla. And for that I turn to my colleague Frank “Craven” Pallotta, CNN Business’ resident expert on all things Hollywood and horror.
There are a lot of Snyder-esque moments in "Black Adam," particularly when it comes to slo-mo action sequences and an overall somber tone. Johnson's Black Adam is a serious-faced anti-hero who isn't afraid to kill a lot of people. "Black Adam" is the perfect encapsulation of both the last nearly decade of DC movies and what the franchise wants to be in the future. For all of its troubles, the DC movie universe had at least seemed to be course correcting. The director, Jaume Collet-Serra, doesn't so much as put his personal touch on it as borrow familiar touches from past Snyder-directed DC movies.
"Black Adam" stormed into theaters this weekend, snaring $67 million domestically. This is a good sign for the film industry, which saw attendance shrink during the pandemic and is currently dealing with a significant lack of new film releases. "Black Adam" is one of only four major releases coming to theaters before the end of the year. The others are all Disney films: "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" (Nov. 11), "Strange World" (Nov. 23) and "Avatar: The Way of Water" (Dec. 16). The hope from movie theater owners is that films like "Black Adam" can continue to drive traffic to theaters beyond its opening weekend.

New York CNN Business —Who says movie stars no longer matter in Hollywood? Theaters and box offices got a much-needed boost this weekend thanks to superhero flick “Black Adam” and romantic comedy “Ticket to Paradise” — two films led by big stars. 1 spot at the domestic box office with an estimated $67 million. The debut of “Black Adam” is the largest opening at the box office since July’s “Thor: Love & Thunder.” (Warner Bros., like CNN, is owned by Warner Bros. In fact, Universal suffered a set back just a few weeks ago when “Bros.,” another romantic comedy, flopped at the box office.
Oct 11 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) announced on Tuesday it will be pushing back the release dates for numerous upcoming Marvel films including, "Blade," "Fantastic Four" and "Avengers: Secret Wars." Following "Blade" director Bassam Tariq's departure from the project in September due to scheduling conflicts, Marvel has decided to temporarily shut down production of the film to search for a new director. "Blade" is now slated to premiere on Sept. 6, 2024 instead of Nov. 3, 2023, which has impacted the rest of the studios' production scheduling. The Marvel Blade character who first appeared in comic book "The Tomb of Dracula," written by Marv Wolfman in 1973 eventually had his own storyline that was later adapted into the Wesley Snipes film trilogy which includes, "Blade," "Blade II" and "Blade Trinity.”Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, stories have been intertwined and a significant delay from one film often impacts the slate for others. Stocks took a beating this week as the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by another 75 basis points, the third consecutive hike of that magnitude.
