Germany's inflation surged to 2.4% in October, back above the European Central Bank's 2% target, even as the country narrowly avoided a technical recession in the third quarter. The preliminary print, announced by German statistics office Destatis, is harmonized across the euro area for comparability. Harmonized inflation had dropped to 1.8% in September, after coming in at the European Central Bank's 2% target in August. So-called core inflation, which strips out more volatile food and energy costs, came in at 2.9% in October, the German statistics office said Wednesday, an increase from the 2.7% reading of September. In a note translated by CNBC, Deutsche Bank economist Sebastian Becker said that the renewed rise in core inflation showed that the problem of growth in price increases was not resolved, and that further patience was needed.

CNN has reached out to Terada for comment on the R-FBI’s role in Russian disinformation efforts, and ties to the state. Storm-1516 and R-FBI network members have spread at least 54 different disinformation narratives online since August 2023, according to Clemson and CNN’s analysis. “Does anyone believe that an American would be the spearhead of what some call the biggest Russian Disinformation operation since the cold war? TelegramAnother prominent figure in propagating Russian disinformation is American Tara Reade, a former Senate staffer who in 2020 accused then-presidential candidate Joe Biden of sexual harassment. The links between Terada’s group and other Russian disinformation efforts are at best opaque, which is likely no accident.

AdvertisementFor more than a decade, Big Tech companies doled out lavish perks to hire and retain a limited supply of technical talent — and some workers pushed the limits of these benefits. AdvertisementBusiness Insider interviewed tech workers and industry experts about Grubgate and the evolving relationship between Big Tech companies and staff. They also described how layoffs, efficiency drives, and tougher policy enforcement have shifted the culture at once easygoing tech companies. According to job marketplace Trueup, at least 650,000 tech workers have been cut since the start of 2023. Alongside industrywide layoffs that began in 2022, many tech companies also trimmed back the benefits on offer.

New York CNN —After a ridiculous spike over the past five weeks that had absolutely nothing to do with the company’s actual business, former President Donald Trump’s social media stock is suffering a sudden setback. Truth Social owner Trump Media & Technology Group’s share price plunged about 20% on Wednesday afternoon. If Trump Media finishes with a loss of more than 21%, it would qualify as its worst one-day loss since going public in March. Trump Media did not release any major news that would explain the nosedive. Trump Media’s stock has been extraordinarily volatile all year.

With bitcoin approaching a major breakout attempt and new all-time highs, it continues to attract all of the attention and rightly so. While it may seem like ether has been out of favor for a considerable length of time, it's not anything different than we've seen before over the years. Overall, there have been five relative phases – with the other two being the times when ETH outperformed BTC. But we've seen it before. Every time is different, but we've now seen bitcoin and ETH leverage technical patterns for nearly a decade now.

HONG KONG — A key piece of a little-told chapter of World War II history almost ended up in a landfill. That diary is now believed to be the only known primary source documenting the involvement of Chinese naval officers in the D-Day landings at Normandy. The 24 British-trained Chinese naval officers were forced to choose between the two sides, with many of them going on to have distinguished careers in the Chinese or Taiwanese militaries. Instead he settled down in Hong Kong, a British colony at the time, where he worked as a merchant seaman until the late 1960s. Most students want their parents to know that they are stressed about paying for college, too. AdvertisementI was a teacher for 10 years, and many high school students would take refuge in my classroom during lunchtime. AdvertisementKids want to choose their major and don't want parents' inputIt's the first question any new college student gets repeatedly: What's your major?" I watched numerous groups of students choose the same college so they wouldn't be separated. All of this can be more easily achieved if parents and college-bound kids are open to having conversations.

China launches new lending tool before year-end loan expiry
  + stars: | 2024-10-29 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
A man looks at his smartphone as he walks past the People's Bank of China building on May 20, 2022 in Beijing. Despite taking effect on Monday, the PBOC did not mention the new tool in its open market operations statement. China's central bank launched a new lending tool on Monday to inject more liquidity into the market and support credit flow in the banking system ahead of the expiration of trillions of yuan in loans at the end of the year. Beijing is counting on massive financial stimulus announced in September to kick-start lending and investment, as a sharp property market downturn and frail consumer confidence weigh on investor confidence. "The central bank's choice to launch this new tool at this time is also expected to be a better hedge against the concentrated expiry of medium-term lending facility before the end of the year," the article added.

Overall S & P 500 profit growth is tracking below what analysts anticipated heading into the reporting period. Still, the S & P 500 is less than 1% below a record high reached earlier this month. Solita Marcelli, UBS Global Wealth Management chief investment officer for the Americas, also warned that high valuations could be a problem for megacap tech stocks as earnings roll out. Technical patterns based on price charts aren't too favorable, either, heading into megacap tech earnings. The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) in June hit its highest level relative to the S & P 500 since March 2000 , when the dot-com bubble peaked.

EU slaps tariffs on Chinese EVs, risking Beijing payback
  + stars: | 2024-10-29 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
A senior EU official said the extra tariffs had been formally approved on Tuesday. It says China's spare production capacity of three million EVs per year is twice the size of the EU market. Beijing has called the EU tariffs protectionist and damaging to EU-China relations and automotive supply chains, and has launched its own probes this year into imports of EU brandy, dairy and pork products in apparent retaliation. The Commission estimates Chinese brands' share of the EU market has risen to 8% from below 1% in 2019 and could reach 15% in 2025. German carmakers have heavily criticized the EU measures, aware that possible higher Chinese import duties on large-engine gasoline vehicles would hit them hardest.

For nine years, the CFO role at Google and parent company Alphabet was held by Ruth Porat, who took a giant pay package in 2015 to leave Wall Street for Silicon Valley. "But I think any organization can always push a little further and I'll be looking at additional opportunities." During the Q&A portion of the call, Evercore ISI's Mark Mahaney asked, "As you're coming in looking at this fresh, is it clear to you there are a lot of newfound cost efficiencies or ongoing cost efficiencies?" The new CFO said one way Google can find additional efficiencies is by using AI "within our own processes and how we get work done." WATCH: Google search benefiting from generative AI

Bottom line The main part of our AMD thesis — fast-growing sales of its MI300 AI chips — is still on track, so we view the post-earnings pullback as a buying opportunity. Given how integral these AI chips are to AMD's growth, we were pleased management on Tuesday night raised its full-year sales projections to exceeding $5 billion. Another factor: AMD's chips passed some performance milestones with customers, Su said. We believe Su's AI roadmap — outlined at its AI event earlier this month — will lead to significant sales growth in 2025 and thereafter. Quarterly commentary Sales in AMD's all-important data-center segment came in $3.55 billion, exceeding estimates and more than doubling year over year.

For example, according to a recent McKinsey study, Black Americans are 10% more likely to be working jobs slated for AI automation. If current trends hold, the new wealth created by GenAI alone will increase the racial wealth gap by $43 billion annually, according to McKinsey. That begins with infrastructure that supports AI enablement for all, including education on AI tools, access to the internet and power to compute. Mortgage rates will remain above 6% throughout 2025, Goldman Sachs said. In the bank's 2025 Housing Outlook, the analysts forecast mortgage rates will remain elevated, even as the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates. They expect mortgage rates to stay above 6% next year and end 2025 at 6.1%. "Our strategists expect mortgage rates to remain elevated for the foreseeable future," the analysts, led by Jan Hatzius, said in a Monday note. AdvertisementThey pointed to a variety of technical factors, including lower rates volatility and a rebound in demand for mortgage-backed securities that will help close the gap between risk-free rates and mortgage rates.

JPMorgan Chase has begun suing customers who allegedly stole thousands of dollars from ATMs by taking advantage of a technical glitch that allowed them to withdraw funds before a check bounced. A Houston case involves a man who owes JPMorgan $290,939.47 after an unidentified accomplice deposited a counterfeit $335,000 check at an ATM, according to the bank. “On August 29, 2024, a masked man deposited a check in Defendant’s Chase bank account in the amount of $335,000,” the bank said in the Texas filing.
