Three decades before he was tapped to lead the Treasury Department, Scott Bessent was asked to help break another country’s financial system. Then 29 years old, Mr. Bessent, working for the financier George Soros, helped “break” the Bank of England with crushing trades against the British pound. He was on a small team at Mr. Soros’s investment firm that, in 1992, amassed a $10 billion bet that the pound was overvalued. Mr. Soros’s fund earned more than $1 billion, along with credit (and infamy) for orchestrating one of Wall Street’s most audacious trades. When President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his selection of Mr. Bessent as Treasury secretary last week, there was no mention of the connection to Mr. Soros.

This luxury is set to be taken to new heights on British Airways superjumbos, as the airline just unveiled a fresh design for its first class airplane seat, set to launch on BA’s A380 planes in 2026. CNN Travel was among the first to try out British Airways’ new cabin product during an unveiling at the airline’s London headquarters. British Airways suggests the wardrobe eliminates the need for overhead storage, which (perhaps controversially) won’t be a component of these new first class cabins. Each first class seat also features a 32-inch 4K inflight personal entertainment screen and adjustable mood lighting, including a “cinema” mode. Future of first classWhile British Airways is investing in its premium cabins, some airlines are moving away from first class.

CNN —The morning after Donald Trump was reelected president, Justices Samuel Alito and Elena Kagan began jousting more than usual. More than other justices on their respective sides, conservative Alito and liberal Kagan are sharp-tongued strategic questioners. As usual, Alito and Kagan began referring to each other’s questions but with barely a glance toward the other at their elbow. Skeptical of the litigants’ case, Alito asked their lawyer Deepak Gupta why Huang would have put out financial information that could be quickly exposed as wrong. Then Alito said, “Well, I don’t want to derail … Justice Kagan had a number of hypotheticals, but I don’t want to interrupt that.”Kagan seemed miffed, but only slightly.

Wall Street's celebration of President-elect Donald Trump's Treasury pick may be a tad premature. The market's resurgence following the Bessent announcement makes for calming copy, but is it the correct assessment of what's to come? It's true that Wall Street veteran Bessent has been a successful money manager. However, Bessent suggested that he is comfortable using tariffs as negotiations to " escalate to de-escalate " the risks of global trade imbalances. But little of what's been discussed about the Treasury Secretary pick supports the rather large rallies we've seen in both stocks and bond prices.

President-elect Donald Trump's vow to implement additional tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico on day one of his presidency signals the start of a wild ride in currency markets, strategists say, warning it would be risky for investors to underestimate the impact on foreign exchange rates. "I think the first reaction here is that investors should get ready for a wild ride in FX volatility," said Kamakshya Trivedi, head of global foreign exchange, interest rates and emerging markets strategy research at Goldman Sachs . Amgen on Tuesday said its experimental weight loss injection helped patients with obesity lose up to 20% of their weight on average after a year in a critical mid-stage trial, as the company races to join the booming obesity drug market. The drug, MariTide, also helped patients with obesity and Type 2 diabetes lose up to 17% of their weight after a year. The company said it did not observe a plateau in either group of patients, which indicates the potential for further weight loss beyond 52 weeks. That could boost Amgen's odds of winning a slice of the weight loss drug market, which some analysts forecast could be worth $150 billion a year by the early 2030s. The developers would only need to reveal the training material that is “sufficient to identify with certainty” whether the copyright holder’s works were used. Failing to comply would create a legal assumption — until proven otherwise — that the AI developer did indeed use the copyrighted work. Sen. It’s a “capital junkie” that’s been on a yearslong binge of unprecedented spending on all-electric and autonomous vehicles. Capital junkieThe latest cost-cutting cycle comes nearly a decade after an infamous Wall Street presentation by late-Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne called “Confessions of a Capital Junkie.” The April 2015 report highlighted the industry’s massive capital spending on overlapping or niche products that Marchionne was convinced could be solved through consolidation and shared capital spending. A ransomware attack on one of Starbucks’ software vendors has disrupted how the coffee chain’s baristas view and manage their schedules, the company said on Monday. Starbucks said it’s working closely with the vendor to resolve the issue.
