HP forecast its first-quarter profit below Wall Street expectations on Tuesday, in a sign of persistent choppiness in demand in the personal computers market. PC makers have seen demand retreat from its peak during the pandemic, when customers stocked up on tech products. AI PCs have not boosted the overall PC demand as "buyers have yet to see their clear benefits", Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa said. The PC maker's adjusted profit 93 cents per share met expectations. For the fiscal 2025, the company forecast its adjusted profit to be between $3.45 and $3.75 per share, the midpoint of which is in line with analysts' estimate.

The new Mate 70 smartphone, which starts at 5,499 yuan ($760), features the HarmonyOS Next operating system, which no longer supports Android-based apps. The Mate 70 represents a “critical step” in Huawei’s software evolution, Lucas Zhong, research analyst at Canalys, told CNN. The shift away from the Android ecosystem “will be essential for Huawei to maintain momentum in the premium segment, solidify consumer loyalty, and attract potential platform switchers,” he said. Major Chinese tech companies have reportedly gotten on board, hiring developers to create compatible apps. “If no one uses it, no matter how advanced the operating system is, it will have no value,” he said, according to a Wechat post.

Packages of Modelo Especial beer are displayed for sale in a grocery store on June 14, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. Shares of Constellation Brands fell 4% in morning trading after President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to place a 25% tariff on Mexican imports once he's inaugurated. Constellation imports all of its beer from Mexico, including Modelo and Corona. To offset the tariffs, Constellation would likely raise prices. Thanks to an antitrust settlement between Anheuser-Busch InBev , Grupo Modelo and the Department of Justice in 2013, AB InBev had to sell Modelo's U.S. business to Constellation.

Auditing experts told BI the available evidence suggests a failure of internal accounting controls. Following the news that Macy's discovered a sizable error in its financial records, auditing experts told Business Insider that the company must now explain how its controls broke down. Without more details, the accounting experts who spoke to BI said it is hard to understand exactly what happened. AdvertisementThe pressure will now be on Macy's auditor, KPMG, to show that it is appropriately scrutinizing Macy's accounting practices and controls, McKenna said. President-elect Donald Trump's vow to implement additional tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico on day one of his presidency signals the start of a wild ride in currency markets, strategists say, warning it would be risky for investors to underestimate the impact on foreign exchange rates. The announcements prompted a knee-jerk reaction in currency markets, with the U.S. dollar rising more than 2% against the Mexican peso and notching a four-year high against the Canadian dollar . "I think the first reaction here is that investors should get ready for a wild ride in FX volatility," said Kamakshya Trivedi, head of global foreign exchange, interest rates and emerging markets strategy research at Goldman Sachs . The index closed 0.6% lower in the previous session as investors welcomed hedge fund manager Scott Bessent as Trump's pick for U.S. Treasury chief. "This is going to be something that we are all going to have to get used to.

AdvertisementDuring his first term, Trump threatened tariffs while renegotiating trade with Mexico and Canada. Scott Bessent, Trump's pick for Treasury secretary, has called tariffs a "negotiating tool." In June of 2019, Trump threatened tariffs against Mexico if the country didn't alter its immigration system, which it eventually did. While financial analysts are taking Trump's threats seriously, some banking leaders seem to think that Trump's most recent tariff threat is a continuation of his prior negotiation tactic. And it underscores frustrations with a tariff exclusion process launched during the first Trump administration that is often described as murky and messy. It’s not clear how or when those higher China tariffs will take effect – nor whether businesses will again have the opportunity to apply for exclusions. But what is clear is that the USTR’s tariff exclusion process during the first Trump administration raised significant concerns in Corporate America. The Trump transition did not provide details on what a tariff exclusion process will look like in the new administration. The researchers did not study tariff exclusions under the Biden administration.

That’s because Daisy is a conversational artificial intelligence chatbot created by British mobile phone company O2 to help combat fraud by tricking phone scammers into thinking they are speaking to a real person. Her debut earlier this month highlights how AI is being used both positively and negatively when it comes to online scams. According to the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, a lobby group, consumers worldwide lost more than $1 trillion to online scams last year. Last year, Virgin Media O2, the wider telecommunications group, blocked more than £250 million ($315 million) in suspected fraudulent transactions, which they say is equivalent to stopping one every two minutes. Fitch Ratings has put several dollar bonds issued by Adani Group companies on its negative ratings watchlist, which means the bonds could potentially be downgraded. "Until such time when the accusations against the Adani group individuals and their consequences have been clarified, TotalEnergies will not make any new financial contribution as part of its investments in the Adani group of companies," the French company said. According to the UNESCO study, 62% of surveyed creators said they don’t vet the accuracy of content before sharing it with their followers. The study comes in the wake of the 2024 US presidential election, in which social media influencers played a key role as an information source for voters. During the campaign, President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris harnessed social media influencers and podcasters with millions of followers, including Joe Rogan and Alex Cooper, to appeal directly to voters. And a separate survey from Pew found that more than half of American adults “at least sometimes” get their news from social media. Online influencers generally do not rely on official sources of information, such as government-issued reports and documents, the UNESCO study found.

A recent Gartner survey found that nearly two-thirds of customers prefer that companies don't use AI for customer service. As President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to lead the CDC, Dave Weldon, a former congressman from Florida and a physician, is positioned as an important anti-vaccine ally for Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump's pick for health secretary. The CDC is responsible for tracking and responding to infectious diseases, developing vaccine guidelines, collecting and analyzing health data and managing public health emergencies. The CDC provides vaccine recommendations for the public, including the pediatric vaccine schedule, which is followed by schools and parents. “This puts CDC, and HHS, in the driver’s seat for determining vaccine recommendations going forward,” she said.
