Many of the questions that predated Saturday evening’s assassination attempt have largely faded into the background as former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden and their respective allies rush to adapt their campaigns to the new landscape. “Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now,” Trump told the Washington Examiner of his convention speech following the assassination attempt. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” he said. The former president has, so far, been restrained in his response to the attempt on his life. Other members of his party have not, with some immediately suggesting – without evidence – that the alleged gunman was driven to act by heated campaign rhetoric.

“The Secret Service is tasked with the tremendous responsibility of protecting the current and former leaders of our democracy,” Cheatle said. The shooter, identified by authorities as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, also was killed by Secret Service agents at the scene. A source not directly involved but with knowledge of Secret Service operations described possible roaming posts, for example, as part of some operational plans. The Secret Service regularly works with local law enforcement agencies to assist with securing events, as is the case in Milwaukee. Further, the Secret Service utilized two local counter-sniper teams during Trump’s rally, in addition to two Secret Service counter-sniper teams.

The failed attempt to assassinate Trump is already impacting his Thursday speech. He says he'd planned an "extremely tough speech" focused on Biden but will now seek unity. "It is a chance to bring the country together," Trump said. AdvertisementIn the wake of a failed assassination attempt at a rally on Saturday, former President Donald Trump says he's torn up the speech he originally planned to deliver at the Republican National Convention. Trump is scheduled to deliver his speech in Milwaukee on Thursday, when he formally accepts the GOP nomination for President of the United States.

The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden was bracing for a week of political onslaught. When gunshots rang out at a Donald Trump political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Saturday evening, much of that appeared to change. He also addressed the nation from the Oval Office, calling for a lowering of the political temperature. “I think it should,” one close Biden ally told CNN when asked if that may end up being a result of Saturday’s attack. But those expected discussions were quickly eclipsed by the response to the assassination attempt on Biden’s predecessor and political opponent.

Editor's note: This is a developing story and will be updated throughout the day. The Secret Service is under growing pressure to explain what went wrong in the hours and minutes before a gunman opened fire in an attempted assassination on former President Donald Trump at his Pennsylvania rally on Saturday. "The Secret Service is working with all involved federal, state and local agencies to understand what happened, how it happened, and how we can prevent an incident like this from ever taking place again," Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said in a statement Monday. The Secret Service is not substantially changing its security plan for the Republican National Convention, which kicks off Monday, Cheatle said, despite the Saturday shooting. "I am confident in the security plan our Secret Service RNC coordinator and our partners have put in place, which we have reviewed and strengthened in the wake of Saturday's shooting," Cheatle said.

Trump called Vance 20 minutes before he announced he’d chosen the Ohio senator on Truth Social, a source familiar with the process told CNN. The two had met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club on Saturday, before the rally at which Trump was shot in the ear. Trump is betting that Vance articulating his evolution from Trump critic to supporter will prove much more potent than those older comments. “President Trump honored the Constitution. “I’m here tonight to tell you, no matter your political background, the best chance we have to give our babies a better life is to elect Donald Trump president of the United States,” Rose said.

Editor's note: This is a developing story and will be updated throughout the day. Former President Donald Trump on Monday officially received the 1,215 delegates required to become the official GOP presidential nominee at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The designation came moments after Trump on Truth Social announced Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, to be his running mate, solidifying the Republican ticket for November. The convention kicks off days after Trump's attempted assassination at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday where one rally attendee was killed, and two others were critically injured. From Monday to Thursday, over 80 of Trump's closest allies, big-ticket donors and other lawmakers are expected to speak.

Various Trump megadonors are also on the RNC lineup including venture capitalist David Sacks and investors Steve and Zach Witkoff. CNN —An Arizona judge is allowing several people facing criminal charges for allegedly conspiring to overturn the 2020 election results to travel to Milwaukee next week for the Republican National Convention. The Arizona delegation to the convention includes three fake electors who have been charged in that state for their alleged roles in the 2020 plot. Earlier this month, the judge overseeing Arizona’s election subversion case approved a request from defendant Nancy Cottle to travel to the RNC. Arizona state Sen. Jake Hoffman, who was recently elected to serve as the Arizona GOP’s national committeeman, and state Sen. Anthony Kern also will be allowed to travel to Wisconsin for the convention. CNN —Christina Bobb, the indicted RNC official and former One America News host, is dodging a deposition in a 2020-related defamation lawsuit, according to Dominion Voting Systems, which is battling her in court. Lawyers for Dominion said a filing Monday that Bobb’s lawyers didn’t answer their emails in March and May when they tried to schedule Bobb’s deposition. After then-President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, Bobb used her on-air role at OAN to repeatedly promote baseless conspiracy theories about the results being rigged, including by Dominion software. After a shakeup at the RNC earlier this year, Bobb and other Trump loyalists assumed top leadership posts, with Bobb focusing on so-called “election integrity” efforts. These efforts include new lawsuits aimed at tightening the rules regarding mail-in ballots and restricting the availability of ballot drop boxes.

On Monday, Trump's campaign announced that the Republican National Committee adopted the former president's platform for the Republican Party. It also promised to preserve Social Security and Medicare benefits without any cuts, including no efforts to raise the retirement age to receive federal benefits. The latest Social Security and Medicare Board of Trustees report found that the program will only be able to pay out full benefits for the next 11 years , after which 83% of the benefits will be available. The platform said that "Trump has made absolutely clear that he will not cut one penny from Medicare or Social Security. American Citizens work hard their whole lives, contributing to Social Security and Medicare.

It's a fraction of the size of the platform the RNC used during the 2016 and 2020 election cycles. The Trump campaign in a press release Monday afternoon touted the new document as "President Donald J. Trump's 2024 Republican Party Platform." The platform now begins with language mirroring a Trump campaign press release, including the presumptive nominee's "Make America Great Again" and "America First" slogans. The GOP also departs from its old platform on Social Security and Medicare. "Republicans will tackle Inflation, unleash American Energy, restore Economic Growth, and secure our Borders to preserve Social Security and Medicare funding for the next Generation and beyond," it reads.

CNN —The panel charged with crafting and producing a platform for the Republican National Committee has adopted a scaled-back document that softened language on abortion and same-sex marriage, Donald Trump’s campaign announced Monday. The new party platform, which was quickly approved Monday by the RNC platform committee, reflects the former president’s broader policy agenda on a range of issues as the presumptive Republican nominee continues to reshape the party in his third run for the White House. Trump approved the updated platform earlier in the day, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. The new platform does not mention a national abortion ban, a policy some social conservatives wanted to see included, but which the former president has publicly said he opposes. The platform will be taken up at the full party convention, which begins in Milwaukee next week.

Yet those efforts are complicated by Trump’s extremely close relationship with many of the people who launched Project 2025 or helped contribute to it. Dans shared with the audience it was his intention to serve in a second Trump administration should the former president win in November. “As we’ve been saying for more than two years now, Project 2025 does not speak for any candidate or campaign. CNN —The US Secret Service on Friday laid out the security measures for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next month, including a perimeter that will prevent protesters from gathering at a large park near the venue. The RNC convention will take place at the Fiserv Forum, upper right, just a few blocks northwest of Pere Marquette Park in Milwaukee, as seen on May 14, 2024. Mike De Sisti/The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/USA Today NetworkFriday’s announcement comes after a monthslong dispute between the Secret Service and the GOP over security measures around the convention, which will take place from July 15 to 18. The party had accused the agency of ignoring its concerns, while the Secret Service said Republicans were undermining efforts to keep the event safe. In April, Republican National Committee counsel Todd Steggerda sent a letter asking the Secret Service to keep protesters farther back from the convention than what had been planned at the time.
