HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Jimmy Garoppolo was ruled out of Sunday's game at the Los Angeles Chargers because of a concussion, making the Las Vegas Raiders' starting quarterback a mystery. Also, the Raiders announced that starting cornerback Nate Hobbs will not play because of an ankle injury, and running back Brandon Bolden didn't make the trip to Los Angeles because of personal reasons. Las Vegas coach Josh McDaniels was noncommittal when asked earlier in the week which quarterback he might go with against the Chargers. “I think everybody is going to get ready to go, and I think sometimes experience is a good thing,” McDaniels said. “It doesn’t mean that it’s going to determine how it’s going to go for one guy versus another.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is in concussion protocol, putting his status in question for when Las Vegas visits the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. The Raiders signed Garoppolo in the offseason after parting ways with nine-year starter Derek Carr, who now plays for the New Orleans Saints. CNN —Pro Football Hall of Famer Gil Brandt, widely regarded as the architect who helped build the Dallas Cowboys into one of the most successful and popular sports franchises of all time, died on Thursday, according to the Cowboys. After a six-decade NFL executive career – 29 years with the Cowboys – Brandt was inducted into the Hall in 2019. As the vice president of player personnel for the Cowboys, Brandt was lauded for his acute ability to recognize player talent – having drafted nine Cowboys players who, like Brandt, are Pro Football Hall of Famers. Brandt is also credited in helping build the annual player draft into a three-day, made-for-TV event. The result was discovering future Cowboys from smaller colleges, or even off college basketball or track teams,” said Pro Football Hall of Fame President Jim Porter.

Instead, he was grilled about the league's painfully slow progress when it comes to inclusion and diversity, particularly among head coaches. During last year's pre-game address, Goodell acknowledged that the NFL had fallen short when it comes to diversity and inclusion. Another persistent headache for the NFL are concussions, which jumped 18% during the 2022 regular season after three years of decline. The league came under intense criticism for its response to a concussion suffered by Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in September. "Anytime we can change the protocols to make it safer for our players we're going to do that," assured Goodell.
