NYON, Switzerland, Oct 10(Reuters) - The United Kingdom and Ireland will host the 2028 European Championship, while Italy and Turkey will stage the 2032 edition of the tournament, UEFA announced on Tuesday. By accepting a joint Italy-Turkey bid for Euro 2032 last week, and with Turkey withdrawing from the race for Euro 2028, the hosts for both tournaments were already all but assured. Turkey's withdrawal from the 2028 race left England, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as the sole joint bidders for that tournament. Euro 2028 will be the largest major sporting event the UK and Ireland have jointly staged. Wembley, with a capacity of 90,000, could be expected to host the final and possibly the semi-finals.

NYON, Switzerland (AP) — The future of soccer’s European Championship for the next decade was decided Tuesday — the United Kingdom and Ireland will host in 2028 and an unusual Italy-Turkey co-hosting plan was picked for 2032. Turkey finally will get to host a European Championship after several failed previous bids, including by one vote against France for the Euro 2016 edition. Co-hosting by five UEFA members in 2028 and two in 2032 follows the radical 13-nation project that was agreed for Euro 2020. Though Italy and Turkey both get direct entry to Euro 2032 as hosts, UEFA will not offer five automatic places for the 2028 hosts. UEFA aims to rebuild its cash reserves above 500 million euros ($528 million) after being depleted during the pandemic.

LONDON (AP) — Britain is rejoining the European Union’s $100 billion science-sharing program Horizon Europe, the two sides announced Thursday, more than two years after the country's membership became a casualty of Brexit. British scientists expressed relief at the decision, the latest sign of thawing relations between the EU and its former member nation. Britain is also rejoining Copernicus, the EU space program’s Earth observation component. Relations between Britain and the bloc were severely tested during the long divorce negotiations that followed Britain’s 2016 vote to leave the EU. British scientists, who feared Brexit would hurt international research collaboration, breathed sighs of relief at the Horizon deal.

Bridget Sweeney moved from New York to Northern Ireland and shares the cultural differences she saw. Since being here, I've noticed myself walking a lot more, too, and I'm much more active here. I think you can attribute some of that to the active lifestyle, but also to the publicly-funded healthcare system in Northern Ireland. I don't like the coffee they have here in Northern Ireland as much. But overall, I'm happier here and I just feel as if I live a very content, and full life in Northern Ireland.
