It appears that a soft landing, where price rises are tamed and the economy manages to avoid recession, is possible. Before the Bell: Is it fair to say that the US is outpacing China in the race for economic supremacy? Just last year people might have said the opposite — that the US was heading towards recession and the Chinese economy was thriving. It is remarkable to see the US economy blazing ahead while the Chinese economy sputters and slips into deflation. What else should investors be aware of when they read about the Chinese economy?

Extreme greed is back on Wall Street
  + stars: | 2024-01-25 | by ( Nicole Goodkind | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
That’s all heralded the return of extreme greed to Wall Street. The S&P 500 is up 2.6% and the Dow is 0.6% higher. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq are both on pace to score their sixth-straight winning sessions. CNN’s Fear and Greed Index, which tracks seven indicators of market sentiment in the United States, tipped into “Extreme Greed” this week, marking a stunning turnaround from just a few months ago, when the index was in Extreme Fear territory. The idea of a soft landing (when inflation rates ease and the economy avoids recession) is likely playing a big part.

There’s plenty for investors to celebrate right now, but a look under the hood reveals quite a bit of decay. But it’s largely Big Tech that’s driving markets higher, and that concentration of gains in so few stocks carries inherent risk. But investors are adjusting expectations: Investors eventually get used to strong data, and come to expect it. “It’s hard for data to keep surprising in the same direction, since investors simply adjust their expectations,” said Allen. Just one month ago, more than 75% of investors thought the central bank would cut rates at their March meeting.

New York CNN —Microsoft became the second-ever company worth $3 trillion on Wednesday as the artificial intelligence boom sent shares of the company’s stock soaring higher. For comparison, Microsoft’s market value is now larger than the entire GDP of France and just behind that of the United Kingdom. After trailing behind Apple for the majority of the past decade, Microsoft surpassed the company to briefly become the world’s most valuable publicly traded company earlier in January. Together, these seven stocks have a market cap larger than any country’s entire stock market except for the United States. Bank of America analysts also moved their target to $450 per share, predicting more growth for the Washington-based company this quarter.

But geopolitical tensions are growing and Wall Street appears to be underestimating their potential impact on the global economy and markets. The United States and China are squabbling about trade, particularly high-powered AI chips that both believe carry consequences for national security. Less trade could mean lower supplies to meet demand — and that could be bad news for inflation around the world. Bank of America also gave geopolitical risk a top spot on its list of surprises that could affect markets in 2024. It’s the worst start to a year for Chinese stocks since 2016, when investors were ditching their holdings following a market crash in 2015.

New York CNN —The S&P 500 index closed Friday at a record high, fueled by surging tech stocks and bets that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates this year. The benchmark index closed at 4,839.81, besting its previous high of 4,796.56, reached on January 3, 2022. Earlier in the trading session, the S&P 500 reached an intraday high of 4,832.17, topping its previous intraday high of 4,818.62, reached more than two years ago, on January 4, 2022. After a rocky start to the year, the S&P 500 has found its footing and is up about 1.5% in 2024. New York CNN —JPMorgan Chase now fights off about 45 billion attempts a day by hackers to infiltrate its systems. That’s double what it was last year, highlighting the escalating cybersecurity challenges the bank and other Wall Street titans are facing. Speaking on the same panel, Gita Gopinath, deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said that the use of AI by hackers is concerning to regulators. More than 70% of bank executives surveyed by KPMG last year said that cyber security was a major concern for their company. That’s why staying one step ahead of it is the job of each and every one of us,” said Erdoes on Wednesday.

Consumer spending accounts for about 70% of America’s gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the US economy, so a recession is nearly impossible as long as consumer spending is growing. Wednesday’s report is expected to be a good one — economists polled by FactSet expect that a strong holiday shopping season boosted consumer spending by 0.4% in December from the month prior. But new data from the New York Federal Reserve on Tuesday has soured the mood on Wall Street. The outlook for consumer spending doesn’t look so bright, either. The trend marked the deepening of a demographic challenge set to have significant implications on the world’s second largest economy, report my colleagues Laura He and Simone McCarthy.

Climate catastrophes: Climate change is a hot topic as leaders meet to discuss balancing economic growth with sustainability. Davos comes just days after scientists around the globe reported that the average temperatures last year reached a new record high. The report also said that cooperation among global leaders on the issue is scarce. So while leaders will likely discuss the use of fossil fuels and green development, there may not be much agreement. New York CNN —Goldman Sachs reported a strong fourth quarter earnings report, driven largely by impressive results in their asset and wealth management divisions. Revenue came in at $11.3 billion and earnings per share were $5.48, blowing away Wall Street expectations. Prior to this report, Goldman posted eight consecutive quarters of declines. JPMorgan Chase paid $2.9 billion to the FDIC, Bank of America paid $2.1 billion and Citigroup paid $1.7 billion. Morgan Stanley, meanwhile, reported a 32% drop in quarterly profit in its earnings report on Tuesday.

The biggest risks US businesses face in 2024

But, while businesses have plenty to be grateful for and much to be optimistic about, the coast isn’t clear. Last week, surveys from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and The Conference Board detailed the biggest risks that businesses are currently worried about. Here are some of the biggest risks for American businesses in 2024. Those financial stresses can reduce the willingness of banks to lend to others businesses and also to consumers,” she said. Bank earnings look really bad this quarter.

JPMorgan’s profit was dragged lower by a one-time $2.9 billion charge the bank had to pay related to the crisis. Without that one-time payment, JPMorgan said its earnings would have come in closer to $3.97 per share, blowing estimates away. The bank reported fourth-quarter earnings of 35 cents per share, missing FactSet estimates of 53 cents per share. The bank said that without one-time fees, earnings for the quarter would have been about 70 cents per share. The bank reported an earnings loss of $1.16 per share for the fourth quarter, falling below earnings estimates of 11 cents per share, according to FactSet.

Citigroup to cut 20,000 employees

New York CNN —Citigroup will lay off 20,000 employees over the next two years, CFO Mark Mason said Friday. The reduction comes after the company reported a $1.8 billion net loss for the fourth quarter of 2023, its worst quarter in 15 years. The bank expects the reduction in headcount to save $2.5 billion over the long-term. These layoffs are part of Citi CEO Jane Fraser’s years-long effort to cut red tape at the company and boost lagging profits. Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser first announced her sweeping restructuring efforts last September.

CVS will close some Target pharmacy locations

New York CNN —CVS will close dozens of pharmacies located inside of Target stores in early 2024, a company spokesperson said on Thursday. The closures come as retail pharmacy chains in the US face increasing difficulties with their prescriptions business, workforces and more. Prior to the closing of any impacted location, prescriptions will be transferred to a nearby CVS Pharmacy, said Thibault. CVS purchased Target’s pharmacy business from the big box retailer in 2015 for $1.9 billion. CVS has about 9,000 pharmacy locations overall.

New York CNN —Republican presidential candidates Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis sparred on a wide range of economic issues during the CNN GOP presidential debate on Wednesday evening. But as Haley and DeSantis duked it out to crown themselves the most fiscally prudent candidate, some clear economic themes began to emerge that will likely have a big influence on the upcoming Republican primaries and beyond: China, debt levels and the government’s role in business. ChinaBoth Haley and DeSantis sought to prove how tough they could be on China. But as my colleague Elisabeth Buchwald points out, the US and China are the first- and second-largest economies in the world. President Joe Biden has also made reducing economic dependence on China a platform in both his 2020 and 2024 campaigns.

New York CNN —The Securities and Exchange Commission said Wednesday the FBI is investigating the hack of the agency’s social media account that rocked the bitcoin world earlier this week ahead of the regulator’s approval of a bitcoin exchange-traded fund late Wednesday. One crypto exchange, Coinbase, even posted a celebratory message on social media Tuesday. However, 15 minutes later SEC Chair Gary Gensler said the agency’s account was “compromised,” allowing for an “unauthorized” tweet to get posted. A spokesperson for X later said that the SEC’s social media account lacked the basic security measure of two-factor authentication, raising serious questions about the agency’s cybersecurity protocols. That alleged lack of security is particularly befuddling, given the SEC’s previous ruling that social media posts could serve as public announcements for investors.

The S&P 500 rose more than 8% this month and the Nasdaq was up about 10%, marking their best month since July 2022. The Dow, meanwhile, managed to shake off a three-month losing streak, also rising by about 8.8% and notching its best month since October 2022.
