But when my ex-sister-in-law Barbara died, I realized that things had changedSign up to get the inside scoop on today’s biggest stories in markets, tech, and business — delivered daily. AdvertisementMy sister-in-law died five years after her brother and I divorced, but in my mind, I was still married to the rest of the family. AdvertisementThough I was the ex-sister-in-law, I had loved Barbara like a sister, and in my mind, that made me family. I was not surprised that I was given the opportunity to go through Barbara's things, because I had tried to remain part of the family after I got divorced five years earlier. Best of all, they always introduced me to people as their sister, and I felt like family.

What’s more surprising, however, is that one House Democratic just introduced a bill to codify Trump’s 10% across-the-board tariffs, revealing how the long-dormant trade policy splits both parties. But they largely fell out of favor during the late 20th century as the U.S. led a global free trade revolution. Despite Harris and other attacks on Trump's tariffs, the Biden-Harris administration decided to keep some of the tariffs Trump imposed during his first term on Chinese steel and aluminum and even increase the fees on strategic sectors like electric vehicles and semiconductors. Still, Biden and Harris have consistently criticized across-the-board tariffs as “indiscriminate” instruments that risk “undermining our alliances,” arguing targeted sanctions do not carry the inflationary risks of wider spread one. Most say the data is clear that freer trade leads to greater economic growth and they say Trump's across-the-board tariffs would raise inflation and could cost jobs.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are tied among likely voters in North Carolina, while Harris holds a comfortable lead in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, according to two new CNN polls conducted by SSRS. In North Carolina, Harris and Trump stand at 48% each among likely voters. In Nebraska’s 2nd District, the so-called blue dot encompassing Omaha, Harris has 53% to Trump’s 42%, the poll finds. An 86% majority of Democratic likely voters and 69% of independent likely voters favor keeping the current system, while 69% of GOP likely voters say they’d rather move to a winner-take-all system in the state. But just 41% in North Carolina say they’re very confident, rising to a 59% majority in Nebraska’s 2nd District.

In today’s edition, national political reporter Ben Kamisar breaks down the latest installment of the NBC News Deciders Focus Group series, which featured young men from battleground states who are skeptical of both candidates. For him or against him, young men see the election as all about TrumpBy Ben KamisarNew focus groups of skeptical young men planning to vote in this fall’s most critical battleground states illustrate how, for them, this election is all about Donald Trump. The battle for young votersPolling has shown a significant gender gap in the presidential race, with Trump holding the upper hand among men and Harris with women. The two campaigns have been vocal about their attempts to win over young men — Trump through the world of influencers and combat sports, and Harris through targeted ads and the refrain about vice presidential nominee Tim Walz’s past as an assistant football coach. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign told NBC News on Wednesday that if the former president were re-elected, his administration would support “universal access” to in-vitro fertilization, potentially opening up the door for same-sex couples to receive coverage for the expensive fertility treatment. President Trump also supports universal access to contraception and IVF,” campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Many of Trump’s campaign promises regarding LGBTQ issues center on transgender people. Only seven states — including Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey and New York — require IVF benefits to include same-sex couples, according to a report from nonprofit news website Stateline. In May, a gay couple filed a first-of-its-kind class action lawsuit against New York City alleging that the city’s health insurance plan is discriminatory because it doesn’t cover IVF for male couples.

The war for the first battleground electoral vote may have been decided this week before a single ballot was cast. They also pointed to the lawn signs and other symbols of enthusiasm for the Harris campaign in the city. By failing to move enough legislative votes into his column, Trump lost his chance to tuck away all five of Nebraska's electoral votes without mounting a campaign. The report didn't blow us away, but it still offered plenty of reminders on why Costco investors should stick around. Total revenue in its fiscal 2024 fourth quarter totaled $79.7 billion, missing analysts' expectations of $79.97 billion, according to estimates compiled by LSEG. Costco has succeeded for decades, but the high inflation of recent years has made the company's value-focused ethos really shine. Put it all together, we're increasing our price target on the stock to $950 a share from $875. In the quarter, Costco's membership renewal rate in the U.S. and Canada came in at 92.9%, a tick lower than the 93% rate observed in the third fiscal quarter, while worldwide held constant at 90.5%.

It represents the major shipping lines, all of which are foreign-owned, as well as terminal operators and port authorities. Depending on duration, a strike could mean shortages of consumer and industrial goods, possibly driving up prices again. A Democratic group is launching a legal fund to help secretaries of state in key states defend against an anticipated post-election deluge of lawsuits. The group began aggressively raising money and campaigning to elect Democratic secretaries of state, who oversee elections in many states, in the wake of former President Donald Trump's false claims of voter fraud in 2020. It first funneled money to deal with postelection litigation to then-Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs in 2022 to deal with postelection litigation. “We have a bunch of pro-democracy secretaries of state that we want to support. The initial four states were chosen in part because the group believes state laws will allow it to effectively send money to boost the secretaries of state.

While it was an asset to Biden in polling against Trump, it appears to be a much bigger advantage for Harris. And in this new NBC poll, Harris’ advantage was just under 20 points. It’s obvious at this point that Trump will win men by close to double digits, ditto with Harris among women. But many voters have seen "Vice President Kamala Harris" as a fresher candidate, including those who previously viewed Trump as a better steward of the economy. That would spell doom for Democrats' Senate majority.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said the coffee chain is committed to bargaining in good faith with the union that represents many of its baristas, as the two sides work to craft a labor deal. He was responding to a letter from the Starbucks Workers United bargaining delegation sent a day earlier, ahead of another bargaining session between Starbucks and the union. Three years ago, Starbucks baristas started unionizing under Workers United, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union. Niccol joined Starbucks several weeks ago, making him a newcomer to the union discussions. Egg prices spiked by 28.1% in August from 12 months ago, easily the biggest increase out of any food item tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The main culprit for rising egg prices is a familiar one: bird flu. Where egg prices are rising the mostStill, the current BLS average of $3.20 per dozen eggs remains high. Zooming in to focus on just the past year, Datasembly found that egg prices have increased the most in Hawaii (+49%), Minnesota (+44%) and Alabama (+38%). When egg prices spiked to record highs in early 2023, Cal-Maine’s profit skyrocketed 718%.

Trump allies have pushed for a special legislative session intended for the Republican-controlled legislature to change Nebraska to a winner-take-all system instead of awarding electoral votes by congressional district. The developments appear to cap months of deliberations over whether Nebraska lawmakers could change the way the state apportions its electoral votes in a way that would benefit Trump. Nebraska allocates its electoral votes by congressional district, and the swing district around Omaha has twice gone to Democrats in recent years, giving them one electoral vote from an otherwise ruby-red state. But if lawmakers changed that to a winner-take-all model, Trump would be all but certain to win all of Nebraska's electoral votes. Maine is the only other state that does not have a winner-take-all system for electoral votes.

Nebraska Republicans dominate the state's politics, including its officially non-partisan, one-house legislature. The Nebraska Examiner reported that without McDonnell, Republicans have "no path" unless a Democrat or nonpartisan lawmaker changes their mind. Nebraska and Maine are the only states that award some of their Electoral College votes by congressional district. In 2020, President Joe Biden carried the Omaha-area 2nd District and its one Electoral College vote. If she carries the Omaha-area vote, she could win by holding onto Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin — the so-called "Blue Wall" states.

On average, according to the latest CNN Poll of Polls, Harris is ahead by 3 points. Instead, it is a race to 270 electoral votes through the Electoral College. Per CNN’s current race ratings, Harris starts at 225 electoral votes to Trump’s 219. A win in Nebraska’s 2nd District would likely give Harris exactly 270 electoral votes when added to Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
