Where did all the lifeguards go?
  + stars: | 2024-07-03 | by ( Kelli María Korducki | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +11 min
My girlfriends, a year or two older, were most interested in catching the eye of the male lifeguards. The swim disparities also influenced the scope of a lifeguard's job. While the lack of qualified lifeguards may partly stem from this problem, getting more lifeguards on stands could turn things around. As we enter our fourth year without enough lifeguards, it's hard to imagine them retaking the podium as the cultural idol of American summer. When more cities prioritize safe water access for the masses — and pay lifeguards accordingly — the mighty lifeguard just may rise again.

Private payroll growth edged lower in June, according to a report Wednesday from ADP that indicates a potential slowdown in the U.S. labor market. Companies added 150,000 jobs for the month, below the upwardly revised 157,000 in May and the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 160,000. The sector added 63,000 jobs, easily the biggest gain among the categories that payrolls processing firm ADP measures. ADP's report serves as a precursor to the more closely watched nonfarm payrolls count that the Labor Department will release Friday. For May, the BLS reported that private payrolls rose by 229,000, or 72,000 more than ADP's estimate.

CNN —The number of available jobs in the US unexpectedly grew in May, signaling continued resilience in the nation’s labor market. Job openings jumped higher to 8.14 million in May, from a downwardly revised 7.91 million in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report released Tuesday. While both hires and job openings rates (as a percentage of total employment) ticked higher for May, the quits rate and layoffs rate were unchanged. The labor market appears to be at a crossroads, Nick Bunker, Indeed Hiring Lab’s head of economic research, wrote in commentary posted Tuesday. But some Fed officials have noted that the job market has lost momentum recently and that it’s highly unclear whether it will continue to hold steady or weaken further.

A Forbes Advisor survey of 1,000 Americans who plan to travel in 2024 showed the post-pandemic "revenge travel" boom is in full force, despite rising inflation. The stats weren't surprising to Thomas, who told BI that this new trend could be partly attributed to the rise of remote work. Revenge travel and other loansIt's not just remote and hybrid working that may have contributed to a rise in travel spending. Travel experts previously told BI they had noticed an uptick in clients opting for luxury air travel experiences, from private jets to first-class and premium-class plane tickets. New York CNN —Trying to get a table at a buzzy new restaurant in New York or Los Angeles? American Express already owns Resy, a rival restaurant booking app, and gives special table access to Amex customers that are not available to other customers. But experts say that Amex’s acquisition gives the credit card company more control over velvet rope access to dinner — and who is shut out. It may help restaurants attract Amex customers with deeper wallets, said Alex Susskind, a professor of food and beverage management at Cornell University. Restaurant owners and merchants have also complained about the fees credit card companies charge businesses, and it could open a new door for fees.

ALICE Americans make above the federal poverty level but not enough to comfortably afford all their daily expenses, often making too much to qualify for government assistance. The ALICE Essentials Index, which includes housing, childcare, food, transportation, healthcare, and technology costs, has risen by a projected 7.3% annually from 2021 to 2023; comparatively, CPI has risen by 6.1%. The ALICE Essentials Index for rural areas was slightly higher than that for urban areas, at 7.5% and 7.2%, respectively. Travel experts told Business Insider they had noticed an uptick in clients opting for luxury air travel experiences, from private jets to first-class and premium-class plane tickets. Oliver Bell, cofounder of luxury travel company Oliver's Travels, said this trend could be partly attributed to "revenge travel," where people are "willing to spend more for incredible experiences" in the aftermath of the pandemic. AdvertisementBut you don't have to be flushed with cash to experience luxury air travel. "A lot of people assume that flying private is only for the rich and famous, the Elon Musk's of the world," Bell said. For example, Surf Air is an LA-based private jet company that offers unlimited private flying memberships for $295 per month or $3,540 annually.

If, like me, you’re wondering about how to rest more, and rest better, you’re in luck. What makes for a creative life? What’s left is creative work, whether we call it “creative” or not. For instance, being a preschool teacher or a social worker or a sales rep is creative work: It requires judgment, empathy, decision making and problem solving. People who flourish in stressful, demanding jobs are ones who have good boundaries between work life and their personal lives.

But retirees and full-time caregivers have been unable to take advantage of a strong job market. Now, consumers are largely left with the same buying power they had four years ago rather than having seen real income gains over that time that would have helped bolster their financial picture. The outlook for the job market also varies by race with the unemployment rate at 5.6% for Black workers and 5% for Hispanic workers. Food prices have risen around 25% over the past four years while Biden was in office. The rise in food prices has disproportionately impacted lower-income households, which spend around a third of their discretionary income on food, according to a 2022 Agriculture Department survey.

Kevin Lamarque | ReutersImmigration — both authorized and unauthorized — has helped the U.S. job market sustain a fiery run in recent months without reigniting inflation, economists and analysts say. This dynamic — a heating job market and cooling inflation — is in part the result of increased inflows of immigrants. Typically, a hot labor market walks a tightrope that could easily collapse into reheated inflation. But the Brookings researchers recalculated the government's estimates — this time, factoring the impact of immigrants on the labor pool. They found that with immigration, the 2024 U.S. job market could safely absorb between 160,000 and 200,000 monthly job gains.
