Just as Hollywood's writers and studios reached a tentative deal to return to work after nearly 150 days, a new strike was brewing. More than 75,000 health-care workers walked off the job Wednesday at Kaiser Permanente, the nation's largest non-profit health-care organization, driven in part by demands for higher pay in the midst of staffing shortages, which left employees burned out. At the same time, the United Auto Workers strike is ongoing, marking three weeks since the first-ever simultaneous walk out against the Detroit Three. In the last few months alone, striking or threatening to strike has led to a string of labor deals where UPS drivers, airline pilots and aerospace manufacturing employees have pushed for and won higher pay. The program, called the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Program, or PEPFAR, started in 2003 by President George W. Bush. Congress missed the Sept. 30 deadline to renew funding for PEPFAR before it expired. The policy had not been included as a part of PEPFAR funding until 2017, when the Trump administration expanded the policy to include it as a part of the program. Advocates for PEPFAR contend the program does not directly or indirectly fund abortion services. For some countries, the health benefits of the PEPFAR program go beyond its mission of reducing the spread of AIDS.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers (UAW) says its members have voted to reject a tentative agreement with Mack Trucks and will go on strike Monday. Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks, was quoted by Reuters as saying he was “surprised and disappointed” that the union had chosen to strike. CNN has reached out to Mack Trucks for comment. Mack Trucks is one of the major US makers of heavy duty and medium duty trucks, with deliveries of 27,000 in 2022 and 16,000 for the first half of 2023. Rejecting dealsIt has become more common in recent years for rank-and-file union members to vote down tentative labor agreements reached by their union leadership.

The U.S. government in May ended the COVID public health emergency declaration during which it bought the shots and provided them to all Americans for free. In the current privatized system, health insurance plans by law must cover the shots at no cost. McKesson (MCK.N), one of the largest U.S. wholesalers, said it has distributed over 3.8 million shots so far. "Health insurance providers continue to educate Americans about where and how to get their COVID vaccines within their plan’s coverage," David Allen, a spokesperson for insurance lobby group AHIP said. Now that the government is no longer footing the bill for their vaccine supply, pharmacy owners need to pay for the shots.

Stores are starting their busiest time of year as customers look for help with colds and the flu. Some drugstores have addressed their challenges by adding employees at busy hours. Chris Adkins said he left his job as a pharmacist with a major drugstore chain a couple years ago because of the stress. Labor strife and staffing shortages in health care are not isolated to drugstores, as the recent Kaiser Permanente strike shows. All told, CVS touts in a pharmacy counter brochure that the company can offer more than 15 vaccines to customers.

The 96,000 net jobs gain last month was more than the combined total for August and July. The U.S. labor market saw broad gains in September in a surprisingly strong jobs report that sparked a quick sell-off in the bond market . Bars and restaurants were the strongest group within leisure and hospitality, adding 61,000 jobs. That is up sharply from the 6,000 jobs added in the same month a year ago. The job market has continued to defy expectations of a significant slowdown, and in fact the numbers for August and July were revised upward.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A massive health care strike over wages and staffing shortages headed into its final day on Friday without a deal between industry giant Kaiser Permanente and the unions representing the 75,000 workers who picketed this week. “No health care worker wants to go on strike,” Caroline Lucas, the coalition's executive director, said Thursday. The strike comes in a year when there have been work stoppages within multiple industries, including transportation, entertainment and hospitality. The health care industry alone has been hit by several strikes this year as it confronts burnout from heavy workloads — problems greatly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The White House on Thursday said President Joe Biden “always” supports union members who choose to strike when asked about the demonstration by Kaiser workers.

At that time, health care workers had every reason to hope that once the Covid-19 pandemic waned, long-overdue and much needed changes to our health care system would finally materialize. We drifted back to our old normal in which health care workers felt unsafe, unappreciated and unsupported. This helps explain why more than 75,000 workers at the Kaiser Permanente health care system have walked off the job, in what union leaders say could be the largest health care strike in U.S. history. Similar to Hollywood writers and actors and the United Automobile Workers, the striking Kaiser workers are demanding better pay and benefits. The changes they want require a major overhaul of how health care is delivered.

CNN —At a time when registered nurses are going on strike to protest staffing shortages, thousands of applicants who want to enter or advance in the profession are being turned away from nursing schools. Nearly 78,200 qualified applications were not offered spots at nursing schools last year, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, which represents schools with baccalaureate and advanced degree programs. Staffing shortages are the main reason why nursing schools are not able to accept more students who want to become registered nurses. Staffing shortages are also a major factor in the current strike by more than 75,000 unionized employees, including registered nurses, at Kaiser Permanente. The national median salary for nursing school professors with master’s degrees is just under $89,000, according to the nursing college association.

As a bus driver for the Orange County Transportation Authority, “I need those legs to drive,” Signorio told CNN Tuesday, citing the long wait for care. Michael Signorio, a Kaiser Permanente member, talked about the effects of the ongoing strike with CNN's Natasha Chen on October 4. During the last few months most of his doctors appointments have been rescheduled and overall everything has been very slow,” Fidel Vasquez told CNN over email.

Some of the key demands by the workers include higher pay to keep up with the cost of living, a $25-per-hour minimum wage for all healthcare workers, and a reformed bonus structure. The union insists Kaiser needs to hire 10,000 new healthcare workers to fill current vacancies, as well as "fix broken hiring processes" that are preventing full staffing. The unions are asking Kaiser Permanente to make massive investment in the education and training of future healthcare workers, and for a diminished role for vendors and third-party contractors that the healthcare network relies on.
