Kayleigh McEnany poked fun at a courtroom sketch of Trump on "The Five" on Monday. The artist, Elizabeth Williams, said that "dumping on court artists" is becoming more and more common. Although other artists' work had been shown in the segment, an image by courtroom sketch artist Elizabeth Williams was displayed on screen at the time. AdvertisementAdvertisementWilliams has been a courtroom artist for decades, and recapped her coverage of Trump going back to the 1980s.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump attends the Trump Organization civil fraud trial, in New York State Supreme Court in the Manhattan borough of New York City, U.S., November 6, 2023. Trump's testimony wrapped up in midafternoon. Over roughly four hours on the witness stand, Trump often avoided direct answers, instead bragging about his properties and his wealth. New York state lawyers said in their lawsuit that the estimates misled lenders and insurers, earning him more than $100 million and exaggerating his wealth by $2 billion. At one point when Trump was on the stand, Engoron asked Kise to take Trump to the back of the courtroom and "explain the rules."

You’ve made it important, but it wasn’t," Trump said of the estimates. New York state lawyers argued in their lawsuit that the estimates misled lenders and insurers, earning him $100 million and exaggerating his wealth by $2 billion. Trump's crowded legal calendar threatens to take him off the campaign trail for much of next year. The trial was originally scheduled to run through early December but could wrap up sooner as the state calls its final witnesses this week.

New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking $250 million in fines, as well as restrictions that would prevent Trump and his sons Eric and Donald Jr from doing business in their home state. Judge Arthur Engoron has already canceled business certificates for companies that control large portions of his business, though that order is on hold during appeal. Trump's daughter Ivanka is due to testify on Wednesday, though she is not a defendant in the case.

But the fact that he is the overwhelming favorite to run the GOP, it makes this a staggering Monday,” said presidential historian Douglas Brinkley. Trump once took the stand — unexpectedly and briefly — after he was accused of violating a partial gag order. “My intent is to attend Donald’s appearance as he was gracious enough to attend my court appearances,” he said. Eric Trump, the former president's middle son, who testified in the case last week, said his father was eager for his appearance on the stand. The judge eventually ruled in Roosevelt's favor after a five week trial, in which the former president spent eight days on the witness stand.

The high-stakes civil case strikes at the heart of Trump’s brand – his real estate empire. New York Attorney General Letitia James is suing Trump for $250 million and seeking to bar him from doing business in the state. Trump’s attacks in a vacuum weren’t particularly remarkable – he’s used the same barbs throughout the course of the trial, which he’s attended repeatedly as a spectator. Trump’s rhetoric prompts an angry response from the judgeEngoron tried at the outset of Trump’s testimony to stop the former president from making speeches and instead answer the questions, but it did little to change Trump’s approach. “There’s a disclaimer clause where you don’t have to get sued by the attorney general of New York,” Trump said.

Just 30 minutes after Trump was sworn in, Judge Arthur Engoron – frustrated by the former president’s non-answers – turned to the former president’s defense team for help. Trump is known for being long-winded and talking around an issue instead of answering questions directly. “This is not a political rally.”But Trump’s two lead attorneys, Chris Kise and Alina Habba, did little to help. “This is a very unfair trial,” Trump said from the witness stand. That narrative is a markedly different one than Trump’s two adult sons provided in testimony last week.

Trump cried "fraud," falsely accusing the judge of valuing the property at $18 million. "The fraud is on the court when you rule that Mar-a-Lago is worth $18 million," Trump said. Trump and his allies have seized on that part of the opinion, falsely claiming that Engoron had personally valued Mar-a-Lago at $18 million. He said it's worth 18 million. "Please, press, stop saying I'm valuing it at $18 million.

On the issue of intent, in last week’s testimony, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump both attempted to shift the blame onto their accountants. First, the judge has already rejected a key route Trump tried to avoid an admission that he intended to defraud the victims. He fined Trump’s lawyers for doing just that. Again, the attorney general wins whether Trump denies it, or whether he doubles down on what the judge has called Trump’s “fantasy world” financial claims. If the past is prologue, Trump likely will continue to deny liability: Blowing smoke is simply in the nature of a narcissist.

CNN —Ivanka Trump on Friday withdrew her appeal of a judge’s order requiring her to testify at her father’s civil fraud trial next week after an appellate court refused to pause her testimony. Ivanka Trump’s testimony comes after she was previously dismissed as a co-defendant in the New York case against former President Donald Trump, two of his adult sons and his company. On Thursday night, an appeals court denied Ivanka Trump’s request to postpone her testimony until her lawyers could make arguments before the panel that she shouldn’t be required to appear. Ivanka Trump’s brothers, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, appeared in court this week. The civil trial began in October, soon after Engoron found in September that Trump and his co-defendants were liable for “persistent and repeated” fraud.

The judge overseeing Trump's fraud trial imposed a partial gag order on Trump's lawyers. Judge Arthur Engoron's wider gag order came after Trump's lawyers made what the judge characterized as "on the record, repeated, inappropriate remarks" about his law clerk. They "falsely [accused] her of bias against them and of improperly influencing the ongoing bench trial," Engoron wrote. Since the trial began in late September, Trump has been fined twice by Judge Arthur Engoron for breaking a gag order that bars him from making public comments about the judge’s staff, stormed out of the courtroom and been made to watch as two of his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, testified this week. His daughter Ivanka Trump is slated to testify on Tuesday. Both sons held the title of executive vice president after their father was elected president. Eric Trump, who maintained more direct involvement in the company, provided more detailed testimony and was at times chippy in his responses to prosecutors who sought to tease out his specific role. During testimony on Friday, he acknowledged he was aware of the Trump Organization's statements of financial condition as far back as 2013 after repeatedly denying knowledge of them.

"The threat of, and actual, violence resulting from heated political rhetoric is well-documented," Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron wrote in a fiery court order Friday afternoon. Trump has violated that gag order twice since the trial began last month. They have been "falsely accusing her of bias against them and of improperly influencing the ongoing bench trial," Engoron wrote. Violating the gag order "shall result in serious sanctions," he added. He has fined Trump a total of $15,000 for twice violating the gag order that was imposed early in the case.

CNN —The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial has expanded a gag order in the trial to extend to Trump’s attorneys after continued lengthy discussions about the judge’s communications with his law clerk during court this week. In a written order Friday, Judge Arthur Engoron prohibited Trump’s attorneys from making any further comments about confidential communications between the judge and his staff inside or outside of the courtroom. The second fine – $10,000 – came after Trump appeared to reference the clerk when speaking to reporters outside of the courtroom. Engoron said he has a right to seek counsel from his clerk and Trump’s legal team has no right to know what they are. “She’s a civil servant, she’s doing what I ask her to do.” Those notes are “confidential communications from my law clerk,” Engoron said Thursday, pounding on the bench.

Things grew heated when Amer apparently succeeded in undermining Eric Trump’s claims that he had little to do with his father’s financial statements. “I understand we had financials as a company,” Eric Trump said. Eric Trump replied: “It appears that way, yes.”In essence, both Trump sons are arguing that despite running the company, they knew nothing about its financial statements. In a bizarre passage of the trial, Trump attorney Chris Kise insisted: “I’m not a misogynist. The judge has fined Trump $15,000 for twice violating that gag order. A three-judge panel, all appointed by Democratic presidents, scheduled oral arguments on Trump's appeal of the gag order for Nov. 20. Trump's lawyers have argued the order violates his free speech rights under the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment. In the New York case, Engoron said on Friday he has an "unfettered right" to consult with his staff members throughout the trial, and that the gag order was intended to protect their safety. Failure to honor the gag order, the judge said, "shall result in serious sanctions."

Ivanka Trump is set to testify on November 8 in a civil fraud trial against her family. Doing so would make her "suffer undue hardship" as she must travel from Florida to New York, he said. In the filing, Moskowitz wrote that Trump would "suffer undue hardship and irreparable harm" if a stay of the testimony order was not granted. Meanwhile, James filed a letter to the appellate court slamming Ivanka Trump's request for a stay in the testimony order, calling Moskowitz's principal arguments "utterly meritless."

Trump has denied wrongdoing and has accused James and Engoron of political bias in extensive comments online and in person. CNN —A higher court on Thursday denied Ivanka Trump’s request to postpone her upcoming testimony in her father’s civil fraud trial, shortly after she claimed she’d suffer “undue hardship” if forced to appear during a school week. With the appeal, Trump sought to block New York Judge Arthur Engoron’s previous order for her to testify until an appeal could be heard by the New York appellate court. The appeal also asked the court to pause the entire fraud trial against former President Donald Trump, two of his adult sons and his company until her appeal could be heard. Ivanka Trump’s two adult brothers – Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, who both helped run the Trump Organization while their father was in the White House – made back-to-back appearances in court earlier Thursday. Engoron last week ordered Ivanka Trump to testify Wednesday in the trial, denying a motion from her attorney to quash a subpoena.
