November’s existing home sales increased for the first time in six months and prices rose for the fifth straight month. WSJ’s Dion Rabouin digs into the details of the November sales report. Photo: Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—A government-controlled mortgage giant has a plan that could help more Americans save around $1,000 on closing a mortgage, the latest attempt to chip away at high costs that officials say discourage home buying. Fannie Mae last month said it would expand the types of mortgages it will purchase that rely on a cheaper alternative to title insurance, which is one of the biggest fixed costs tied to closing a mortgage.

Some of the unusually rapid return to form for stocks is thanks to the economy’s quick recovery from Covid lockdowns. Photo: Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesIf you’re finding it hard to remember the pandemic, you’re in good company: Investors have already consigned the Covid chaos to history. Someone who put $1,000 in the S&P 500 in December 2019—when the first infections occurred in Wuhan, China—and reinvested dividends would have made 6.8% annualized after inflation and had $1,299 by the end of last year. That return is bang in line with the annualized return investors have received in the stock market since 1802.

watch nowA sharp drop in mortgage interest rates in December may have kickstarted this year's spring housing market early. Optimism about mortgage rates increased sharply in December, according to a monthly consumer survey by Fannie Mae. "This significant shift in consumer expectations comes on the heels of the recent bond market rally," said Palim. "Notably, homeowners and higher-income groups reported greater rate optimism than renters." The average rate on the 30-year fixed has been on a wild ride since the start of the Covid pandemic.

Futures contracts on orange juice , cocoa , coffee and sugar have soared in part because of extreme weather and supply concerns related to El Niño. "You can say El Niño has a sweet tooth because it sort of eats or takes away much of the sugar in the world," Carlos Mera, head of agri commodities market research at Netherlands-based Rabobank, told CNBC. "Sugar prices have probably already been passed on [to consumers] but certainly for chocolate we should expect a big increase at retail level — and El Niño is certainly something to watch." Joe Raedle | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesThe effects of El Niño tend to peak during December, but the impact typically takes time to spread across the globe. It also warned that several crops could be adversely affected by El Niño early next year, while acknowledging there is the potential for some crops to benefit, citing those in the United States, southern Brazil and Argentina.

Some large Permian Basin developers are using a capital-heavy, somewhat risky method of extracting oil. Photo: Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesHow low can they go? U.S. shale developers have been on a relentless chase to drill for oil as cheaply as possible. With plenty of cash in their pockets and a hunch that they might soon exhaust their best inventory in the prolific Permian Basin, some companies have been shifting their focus to making sure they get every last drop of crude they can get out of what they have. That could mean higher costs today.
